Top 5 Favorite SFF Creatures

This is a little late, but I thought better late than never. This past topic for Top 5 Wednesday was Favorite SFF Creatures!

Top 5 Wednesday was created by Lainey from gingerreadslainey (YouTube, Goodreads) and Sam from Thoughtsontomes ( Youtube, Goodreads) If you would like to join, here is the link for the Goodreads group with all the information.

One of my favorite things in Science Fiction and Fantasy Novels are definitely the creatures. I think it adds more to the story and are so imaginative. The authors get to take so many creative liberties with creatures and even in books that feature the same creature by name, they are each unique and different. A lot of the ones I picked are more of a paranormal being than a creature I guess, but they count!

Gargoyles

I have only read one series that featured Gargoyles and would love more of them. I think they are so interesting and unique. The fact that you never hear much about them is why I find them so intriguing. They are used as stone guardians, but to see them come to life and have a backstory created about them is awesome. I loved what Jennifer L Armentrout did with them in her Dark Elements Series. If you know of any more books that feature Gargoyles let me know!

Phoenix

This another mythical creature that I feel like hasn’t been used or talked about enough in books. I know they are starting to appear in more YA books, not sure about adult SFF. The thing I love most about Phoenix is the aspect of reincarnation. Like if birds of fire were not cool enough already. This again is something that authors take creative liberty and each phoenix story is different. I loved the way it was done in SD Grimm’s novel Phoenix Fire, whereas the Phoenix are passing as humans there to stop monsters and reincarnate as the same people in a different time. They are such beautiful creatures and I cannot wait to read Crown of Feathers by Nicki Pau Preto and see how she depicts these magnificent creatures.

Werewolves/Shifters

I had to include a staple and classic creature of SFF! I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of werewolves. Night time is my love and have an obsession with the moon so maybe thats why. I enjoy all of the different approaches to the concept of werewolves/shifters. Between the two, I like shifters slightly more because they can change at will! I mean if any of you know me, you know I was a huge fangirl of Teen Wolf ! I think my favorite book with werewolves have to be Bitten by Kelley Armstrong because I really enjoyed the lineage and hierarchy of the wolves. But don’t get me wrong I also adore what Stephanie Meyer did with the story of the werewolves!

Pegasus

Now I am all about the unicorns and think they are beyond awesome, but one thing cooler than a horse with a horn, a horse that can fly! Maybe its because all the books I have read or movies I have watch with a Pegasus, they are so sassy. I recently read Stain by A.G Howard and the Pegasus in that story is my everything. So full of spirit and sass and they can fly, what more do I need to say!

Heartless

So it is kinda of hard to explain what they are, they are a version of a zombie kind of. It comes from the book Bring Me Their Hearts by Sara Wolf. I loved the story that came from Wolf about the Heartless and the way in which they are connected to a witch. I think I find them more fascinating than Zombies, because I am a little frightened by Zombies. More of the fast moving, brain eating ones. I have never heard of anything like the Heartless other than in the book by Wolf, but think there is a lot that could be developed and come from the idea!
