Mystery of the Quote

Come little children, I’ll take thee away

into a land of Enchantment,

Come little children, the time’s come to play

here in my garden of Shadows.

Follow sweet children, I’ll show thee the way

through all the pain and the Sorrows.

Weep not poor children, for life is this way

Murdering beauty and Passions.

Hush now dear children, it must be this way

to weary of life and Deceptions,

Rest now my children, for soon we’ll away

into the calm and the Quiet.

Come little children, I’ll take thee away

into a land of Enchantment,

Come little children, the time’s come to play

here in my garden of Shadows.

-Brock Walsh (“Garden of Magic”)

I got the book Come Little Children by D. Melhoff in the mail today. Not only is the cover beautifully done, but in one of the first pages I found this poem and immediately recognized it from the movie Hocus Pocus. While trying to locate the poem on the internet so I could just copy it and not type the whole thing, I realized that there is some controversy on who actually wrote the poem (said to be written by Edgar Allen Poe, but Poe’s fan do not believe it came from him). I am still a little confused on the origin of the poem, but according to Melhoff’s website this is the way to credit this poem:

Garden Of Magic

from HOCUS POCUS*

Text based on the poem “Come Little Children” by Edgar Allan Poe

Additional text by Brock Walsh

Music by James Horner

(c) 1993 Walt Disney Music Company

All Rights Reserved Used by Permission

*Adapted lyrics not used in film

Bottom line, I really enjoy this poem and found it very interesting that the origins and creator of the poem is a mystery! Well thats my rant for the day.
