First Read of 2018 | Discussion Post

I am sitting on my bed staring at my bookshelves trying to decide what should be my first read of the new year. For some reason after everything that happened in the last year I feel like choosing this first book is such a big deal. I need to set up my year for success and positivity, both in my personal and blogging life and goals. It may seem silly, but that is just the way my brain is working right now. It has always been books that have saved me from the downs of life and I want 2018 to be full of the ups and the good things! So I decided to share my thoughts and process for how I am going about picking which book will be my first read of the New Year!

I feel like if I start with the wrong book it can cause a massive book slump because I have been reading so much lately and want to keep up with it since I have so many books I want to read and get to some books I have waited to long to read. So here are my requirements for the book I choose.

⇒ Must be around 300 pages
[ I feel like 300 pages is an average length book and a god place to start. If I start with one that is too short I will get too fast of a start and it could lead to a book slump if the next book takes too long to read. And if it is too long it will drag out and make me feel like I am off to a bad/slow start]

⇒ Must be the 1st in a series/part of a series
[ I feel like if it is in a series it will cause me to want to keep reading and continue on with the next books. One of my goals is to read/complete more series and if I start of with a standalone I feel like that is what i will continue to pick up.]

⇒ Must be a backlist book
[This is another one that is partly because it will count for one of the challenges I am participating in so I will be able to check off a box and that will keep me wanting to continue. I am such a sucker for making list to be able to cross things off and makes me feel like I am making progress. It is also because if it is an older book there will be more reviews for it and you will have a better idea if you will like it or not. There is nothing worse then starting the year off with a book that you don’t like very much]

⇒ Must be a YA
[ I read YA a lot faster and think that it is a good place to start the year.]

⇒ Needs to be fantasy
[ I have been avoiding fantasy like the plague for some reason this past year. It is one of my favorite genres and I need to read more fantasy. So I thought if my first read of the year was a fantasy it would help me with reading more fantasy in 2018. ]

⇒ Must be an author I have read before
[Again this goes with the whole knowing I will enjoy the book because I have read the author before!]

So those are my thoughts on the qualities I need in the first book I pick to read in 2018! I will let you know once I decide which one it is. I have a couple choices that fit into these categories, but still not 100% sure which one it will be.

Let me know how you are going to decide what to read as your first book of 2018 or which book you have already decided will be the first one!

2017 Bookish Bucket List |December Update

2017

I have done this now for the past three years and have been decently successful with it.. This year I have set a lot of goals for myself and really want to throw myself back into the book community and blogging world. The past year off has left me wanting so much from books because I have missed the atmosphere and love of books.

♠ Read at least 100 50 books. I have a challenge I have created for myself and its the year I take on some completed series. [I read 49 (like 300 pages left in one more I am trying to finish today) books this year! ]

♠ Read and Complete 6 Series. This goes along with the challenge I have am creating. There are so many out that I have yet to pick up and its crazy. [I finally was able to complete another one bringing my total to 2 series completed in 2017. That number is so weak]

♠ Read at least three daunting books. This is a repeat from last year.I feel like I am always so intrigued and interested in the huge books, but never get around to reading them because they are intimidating. (I am counting this as over 500 pages.)[***** I did this!!!! One of the books was 496 but that was 4 pages away so I counted it as 500! ]

♠ Read 45 books from my TBR. I just recently moved and don’t have my books. I have been going to the library and with that it give way to an endless array of books. I really want to make sure I am still reading books that I had actually purchased. [I was able to read 30 books from my TBR! I am hoping to bring my TBR of 230+ books down by a lot next year with the help of the #beatthebacklist challenge! ]

♠ Read at least 5 Non-Fiction Books. I started doing this last year and really enjoyed it. I love learning more and I have a lot I am interested in. [ I was able to read 3 this year. I am really hoping to have a much larger number in 2018 as I have quite the collection of nonfiction books developing.]

♠ Start New Blog Series. I really want to work harder on developing my blog. There are many things I participate in that are created by other bloggers and I really want to come up with something that is completely my own and get others involved in! [I started to do my Books Best Friend posts in which I am hoping to continue. I am looking to add a lot more content next year and will hopefully be able to create some unique and creative posts. ]

What were some of your 2017 goals/resolutions? How did you do on them?

BIG BOOKS | 2018 Goals

One of the things I really want to focus on this year is big books. I have included it in my bookish bucket list for the past few years and will be included again for 2018. I consider a big book to be 500 + pages. This has been a struggle that I have faced every year because big books intimidate me because they take a lot of time and dedication. You have to be in the mood for it and know it will take a few weeks to finish.  I own a lot of them and many of them I have heard nothing, but awesome things about. All of the big books I have taken the time to  read I have not been disappointed with. So I want to put this out into the blogosphere that I want to read at leastBig Books in 2018! Here are some of the big books I own and really want to try to get to in this next year. Obviously this list is more than 6 and some are in a series with other books that belong in that series that also have more than 500 pages. These are just some of the top ones I really need to be getting to very soon!

» Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy {864 pages} (I started this a long time ago and got halfway through but never finished it)

» Cress by Marissa Meyer {552 pages} ( I need to continue on with these series so bad)

» A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas {626 pages} ( Another series I need to continue with)

» Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K Rowling {870 pages} ( I know how can I not have read this yet. I need to finish reading this series)

» The Republic of Thieves by Scott Lynch {726 pages} ( I have been holding off on reading this book because I have been waiting for the release of the 4th book)

» The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson {781 pages} ( Starting to see a pattern? Another series I need to continue)

» Americanah by Chimsmsnfs Ngozi Adichie {589 pages} (I started this a few years ago and some stuff happened and I never continued)

» Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss {662 pages} ( This is one I have been meaning to read for so long)

What are some big books you need to read or want to read in 2018!

Friday Reads | Wrapping Up 2017 Edition

downthebookhole

I am some books I need to finish up before the end of 2017 so that I can start fresh in 2018! I have 40 pages left in Seven Days of Us by Francesca Hornak and 300 pages in Jet by Jay Crownover. I am hoping to finish both of these books this weekend and work a lot on my blog preparing for the next few months and some events and ideas I have. There might be some very short books I try to fit in if I complete these two, but I really want to start on Monday January 1st with a brand new books! As to which one is the question. So here is to wrapping up the year with some books and ringing in the new year with even more books!

What are you reading this weekend?

Book Bullet Journal Planning | 2018

As we are about to begin the new year, I thought it would be fun to share some of the planning I have been doing for 2018. I have been working on developing my goals and challenges for books/reading for the 2018 year. This will develop a lot over the year and as the year progress I might add to this post or create another, but for now I am just going to share what I have so far. I have done quite a few different forms of bullet journalling in the past and get insanely jealous of those that are so good at their lettering and somehow make the mundane daily task of their lives look so cool on paper. I am hoping to get better at this but I do it because I enjoy keeping track of my book stats and goals throughout the year. It gives me another outlet to write things about books for myself other than just my blog. If you have any cool book bullet journal ideas or keep one of your own I would love to see it! Here are the pages I have been working on.

Do you use a book bullet journal or even just a book journal?

Weekend Down the Book Hole | 12/22-12/25

I thought it would be fun to do my long Christmas Weekend because I am planning on staying in all weekend, reading and blogging!

So today I worked from home, which was great and allowed me to get quite a bit of reading done today! I started prepping for my weekend holed up in my apartment working on my blog and reading. I have been working on my end of the year wrap ups and 2018 goals. Today I also decided that I want to do a Christmas Eve Read-A-Thon! As I was doing so stuff for work I started watching The Vampire Diaries, I have never read the books or watched the show before, but thought it was a good time to start. I drank way too much coffee as well today, but I was able to read close to 200 pages of The Book Thief by Markus Zusak! I have 70 pages left and plan on finishing it tomorrow!

I started this morning with a large cup of coffee and some blogging. While I have some time I want to get some post drafted and scheduled! I spent the majority of the day watching The Vampire Diaries and working on posts!

I spent the evening prepping for the 24hour read-a-thon I am going to do for Christmas Eve! I was able to clean some of my apartment while listening to some of Simon Vs.

I was also able to curl up on the couch with the kittens and finish The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Of course I had tears streaming down my face after I finished that beautifully written piece of art!

How we felt after we finished reading this book.

Christmas Eve Read-A-Thon preparations all set and ready for a day full of reading!

I made it like 2 hours past midnight before I passed out. The kittens woke me up sitting on my chest staring at my face. I was listening to some more of Simon Vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli as I was making coffee and a huge yummy breakfast! I need to check some social media things and prepare the living room for some more hours spent reading Seven Days of Us by Francesca Hornak.

I have hit the mid day sleepies. I need to take a break from reading and reenergize with some caffeine and food! I have been able to read almost 300 pages and its 2:00PM. I have finished a collection of cat poems and a fantasy short story. I am almost done with Simon Vs. and 100 pages into Seven Days of Us!

So I accidentally took a nap in the early evening. After waking up I made some dinner and rehydrated myself. Since then I have been reading away like crazy with the occasional social media and kitten breaks.

The book I am currently reading is Seven Days of Us  by Francesca Hornak. So far it is okay, there is drama that is of course helping me to keep moving forward. I love that it has a Christmas setting, but I am reminded just how much I dislike contemporary fiction. It just gets boring for me and is hard to read. Which is so funny because I love drama tv shows. I am just getting extremely annoyed with the characters and they are acting so dumb. I think sitting down and trying to read it all in one day was the best choice for this book because I feel like otherwise I might have given up on it because it would have just dragged. The chapters are quite short and I appreciate the multiple narrative it is definitely helping. I am currently 225 pages into this 355 page book with an hour left in the 24 hour Christmas Eve Read-A-Thon!

Started today by having my older brother FaceTime me at 1am his time as he was setting things up for my nieces and watching The Christmas Story! After we got off the phone I did a little more reading on the couch with the kittens!

I slept in a little bit today and then woke up to make myself a huge breakfast and then FaceTime the family! My big plans for the day are to watch Christmas movies and finish off all my snacks so I can get back on my healthy eating! I have watched The Grinch and I am now starting Meet Me In St. Louis, which is one of my favorite movies, especially at Christmastime!

I didn’t get around to much reading today, but I did watch a ton of Christmas movies, cuddled with the kittens and lounged enjoying my last day off for the weekend. I also spent quite a bit of time working on my blog and the Alice in Wonderland themed read-a-thon I will be hosting on my blog in Feb. for my 5 year blogiversary. I am really excited about the read-a-thon and hope that everyone joins in with me! Well I had a great weekend and it was a much needed break from life for awhile. I read a lot and got really excited about the new year. Although I had some good things happen in 2017 there was also a lot of shitty things. I need to rediscover myself again and make a fresh start. I have lots of goals for 2018 both bookish and personal. I think it is going to be a great, fun and busy year! Happy Holidays!
