2018 Bookish Bucket List | January Update

Here goes year 4 doing this! And I think this is going to be the year I actually complete my bookish bucket list! I really want to throw myself back into the book community and blogging world, the past few years have been a little tough to get the reading done and last year I set high goals, but came up short.

♠ Read at least 75 books.
[I have been off to a great start having completed 8 books so far!]

♠ Read and Complete 10 Series.
[ I have not completed any yet but have made some serious progress on some!]

♠ Read at least 6 BIG books. This is a repeat from last year.I feel like I am always so intrigued and interested in the huge books, but never get around to reading them because they are intimidating. (I am counting this as over 500 pages.)
[This has not happened yet, but it will]

♠ Read 50 books from my TBR (#beatthebacklist)
[ So this is like a double because not all the books I read for #beatthebacklist are from my TBR. ]

TBR: 3    #Beatthebacklist: 8

♠ Read at least 5 Non-Fiction Books.
[This has also not happened yet, but I have so many I want to get to this year]

♠ Post 3 Reviews a Month.
[ I was able to accomplish this goal this month! So 1 down 11more months to go!

♠ Create or Join A Book Club.
[ I am joining Crone Blogger Book Club online!]

♠ Create my Own Read-A-Thon.  I want to create something that will become a yearly thing and go along with my blogiversary!
[ That is happening in Feb! Check out the announcement post for my Down The Read-A-Thon Hole Challenge| Alice in Wonderland themed Read-A-Thon]

What are some of your 2018 goals/resolutions? How are you doing on them?

January 2018 Reads | First Lines

I decided that it would be fun to start a new feature to add the the wrap up of books I read every month. For me most of the time I pick up and look at books in the store it is the first lines that capture my attention and draw me in. It has always been intriguing to me the amount of thought that must go into those first words the author decides to but as the introduction to their work. The first lines are your first impression of the book.

Wild Magic by Tamora Pierce
“Each year, at the end of March, a great fair was held in Cría, the capital of Galla.”

The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis
“This is how I kill someone.”

The Thousandth Floor by Katharine McGee
” The sounds of laughter and music were dying down on the thousandth floor, the party breaking up by bits and pieces as even the rowdiest guests finally stumbled into the elevators and down to their homes.”

Final Girls by Riley Sager
“The forest had claws and teeth.”

Dear Martin by Nic Stone
“From where he’s standing across the street, Justyce can see her: Melo Taylor, ex-girlfriend, slumped over beside her Benz on the damp concrete of the FarmFresh parking lot.”

Wolf-Speaker by Tamora Pierce
“The wolves of the Long Lake Pack, gorged on a careless mountain sheep, slept as they digested their meal.”

The Dazzling Heights by Katharine McGee
“It would be several hours before the girl’s body was found.”

Wicked by Jennifer L. Armentrout
“Sweat dotted my brow. Tendrils of red hair clung to my neck. My legs fel like I’d been sitting in a sauna. I was pretty sure there was a waterfall of sweat coursing between my breast, and that alone put my mood somewhere between slapping someone and pushing them in front of a trolley.”

Series Serial Reader| January 2018 Update

The past couple of years my life has taken me all over the country doing a variety of different things, but it has kept me from reading. Especially reading all the books that have been coming out and catching up on series I have started. I decided that I wanted to make this a year revolving mainly around series. I made the decision that it would be fun to create a challenge for myself and that is how Series Serial Reader came about. This will be my second year attempting this challenge. I did not do so well at it last year, but I know 2018 is going to be the year of series!

The point of this challenge is:
♠ To get me to read series that have been completed and that I haven’t even started yet and are embarrassed to say I haven’t read yet.
♠ Finish series that have been completed in publication, but that I have not gotten to finished *cough Harry Potter cough*
♠ Finally catch up and understand what everyone in the book community has been talking about
♠ Have fun and get lost in new books

I am going to be following a tracking system that I have been using for the past couple years and that can be found in my 2018 Series Challenge. I will also be doing monthly updates on my blog and possibly update on my twitter @downthebookhole and on my Instagram @downthebookhole. I have been thinking that once I finish a series I might do some post including series wrap-ups and other little themes that might go along with the books (possibly even throughout the series). I would love to do buddy reads for any of the series I want to read this year. I also plan on binge reading a lot of these!

The series I want to read fall under a few different categories:

I know there is no way possible I can get all of these read this year but I really want to make it my mission to try and get through as many as possible. I want to complete at least 6 series this year but hoping for so many more!

I would love for others to join in the fun of binge reading series this year. What series should I put at the top of my priority list? Are there any you have been meaning to read and want to do a buddy read with me? Are there any I should add to this list? I would love any input or interactions regarding this challenge. Make sure if you want to participate you link it back to this post so I can follow along with your progress!

Happy Reading!

A Futuristic Manhattan Gossip Girl!
~Drama, Lies, Friendships, Secrets, Relationships~

I really had not heard much about this book except for when it first came out. I saw it at my library as an audiobook and thought I would give it a try. I was extremely happy that I did. This book was no mean perfect, it had its flaws but overall it was fun and delivered on what it was. I struggled with a rating because there were areas in which I wanted more, but I decided that I really enjoyed the read, it surprised me and had a lot going on that I definitely thought it could earn the 5 stars from me.

If you have ever watched/read Gossip Girl you will definitely notice some parallels with some of the characters, but don’t let that deter you because it is completely its own story with some awesome futuristic creations and a mystery that the whole books lead up to solving.

The book starts off with an event that happened with little detail and has you trying to figure out the whole time who it was and what happened. It is told in multiple POV and had tons of drama, lies, secrets and intrigue that keep me flying through the story. So much was going on with all of the characters that had that guilty indulgent pull of needing to know more and had me lapping up all of the drama going on. On top of the dramatic pull there was the layer of science fiction. This is one area that I would have loved more on, but it was not needed for the overall story. The concept of this futuristic Manhattan and all the cool innovations that are in this world definitely added to the story. I really enjoyed the idea of how the tower works and thought it very well described the way our society would look like in this setting. The mode of transportation was definitely my favorite, especially the transatlantic.

The cast of characters were all diverse and each had their flaws. No one is safe from secrets and lies, but it was true to the way people that age act. And although there was not a lot of parental presences, I enjoyed that they were there and that it wasn’t like much of futuristic/dystopian YA with all of the parents missing.

I do not want to go into much because I do not want to give anything away. But overall I really found this book to be a fun quick read that was full of surprises and had me trying to figure out the ending the whole way through. It is loaded with drama and has some really interesting innovations and science fiction add ons that make this a great thriller that can be enjoyed by a variety of people. And even though the one mystery is solved at the end, the book definitely leads off with you needing more and wanting to know what comes of the event that takes place.

My biggest struggle with audiobook usually falls onto the narrator. I really enjoyed Phoebe Strole. She had a narration style that did not bore me to pieces or annoy the crap out of me. She did not try and change her voice to sound like a male (which is my biggest pet peeve with narrators). I would definitely listen to other books she narrated!

Bring Me Their Hearts by Sara Wolf | Cover Reveal

In a new series Publishers Weekly has listed as “one of the most anticipated YA’s of 2018”, we’re excited to share the cover for Bring Me Their Hearts! NYT bestselling author Sara Wolf delivers a fast-paced, gritty fantasy sure to thrill fans of Holly Black, Sabba Tahir, and Sarah J. Maas.

About the book:

Zera is a Heartless—the immortal, unaging soldier of a witch. Bound to the witch Nightsinger ever since she saved her from the bandits who murdered her family, Zera longs for freedom from the woods they hide in. With her heart in a jar under Nightsinger’s control, she serves the witch unquestioningly.

Until Nightsinger asks Zera for a prince’s heart in exchange for her own, with one addendum: if she’s discovered infiltrating the court, Nightsinger will destroy Zera’s heart rather than see her tortured by the witch-hating nobles.

Crown Prince Lucien d’Malvane hates the royal court as much as it loves him—every tutor too afraid to correct him and every girl jockeying for a place at his darkly handsome side. No one can challenge him—until the arrival of Lady Zera. She’s inelegant, smart-mouthed, carefree, and out for his blood. The prince’s honor has him quickly aiming for her throat.

So begins a game of cat and mouse between a girl with nothing to lose and a boy who has it all.

Winner takes the loser’s heart.

About Sara Wolf:

Sara Wolf is a twenty-something author who adores baking, screaming at her cats, and screaming at herself while she types hilarious things. When she was a kid, she was too busy eating dirt to write her first terrible book. Twenty years later, she picked up a keyboard and started mashing her fists on it and created the monster known as the Lovely Vicious series. She lives in San Diego with two cats, a crippling-yet-refreshing sense of self-doubt, and not enough fruit tarts ever.

survive and those who are Goddess touched can complete the warriors who fight
to protect the world from the creatures that go bump in the night.
Jennaveve, the Fey chosen by the Goddess
to be the queen of her people for the past few millennium, is tired and wishes
for a break, but hadn’t counted on being reduced to almost mortal thanks to a
dark stranger. They say you should be careful what you wish for. The last time
she’d taken a break, her Fey had left their realm, resulting in shifters on
Earth known as the Mystic and Iron Wolves and even more she was still searching
Damien and Lucas Cordell knew they’d
share a Hearts Love when the time came. As the twin sons of the Vampire King
who’d mated a shifter, they were the first of their kind. When they’d thought
their mate was finally within their reach and was a shifter like their mother
only to realize she wasn’t theirs, they’d almost lost their lives to the alpha
of the Iron Wolves, Kellen Styles. Instead, the error led them to the being
that was…the Fey Queen Jennaveve. Only she was even more elusive than the wind.
Time and patience was something Damien
and Lucas had in spades, until the female they’d already laid claim to, even if
she hadn’t accepted them yet, was taken by an enemy. Saving Jenna became their
one and only focus. As time and realms slip between them, their fear for her
had them forgetting about patience and made claiming Jenna as their Hearts
Love, hoping she accepted their Dark Embrace.
Will the Cordell Twins be able to rescue
Jenna from the evil who has taken her? Will Jenna get her powers back? Who is
the dark presence and how will they defeat a being who is strong enough to
bring the Fey Queen down to her knees?

They both turned as one toward the door as a commotion
swirled into the room.
“What have you done?” Raina asked.
Lucas looked at the tall man who followed behind their
sister, waiting to see what Creed, the son of Satan, had to say. Hellboy
himself would be a good one to have on their side. “Shit, how’d you get in?” he
asked as realization dawned.
Damien flashed to his sister. “Where did you come from?” He
held her by the arms, giving her a little shake.
A deep rumble came from Creed. “Boy, I suggest you unhand my
Eros, or I’ll remove your arms from your body.”
Lucas came to stand next to his brother. “Our Hearts Love is
missing along with our father. We’ve been locked into this fucking castle and
you two just strolled in like it’s nothing. We just want to know if you can get
us out.” The last was yelled at a decibel that bordered on a roar, but Lucas
was at the zero fucks giving point.
“You got two seconds before I start dismembering your
brother. Tell him to get his fingers, palms, and any other body part off my
Raina if he wants to keep them.” Creed’s voice had become the deep tone of his
demon side.
“Damien, you might want to take a step back before we have to
rumble with our brother-in-law in front of baby sis here. Raina, please answer
the damn question while our brother is letting you go. Now, Damien, release
her.” He put as much order behind the last part, hoping to reach his twin, but
he’d never seen his twin’s eyes turn such a dark obsidian like their father’s.
Raina wrapped her arms around their brother, stilling Creed
from going killer beast. “Damien, calm down. We popped in like we always do. I
felt mama’s distress and told Creed I needed to visit. He of course insisted he
come with. When we got here I couldn’t find her, so I followed you two morons’
scents. There’s another, not quite the same, but familiar smell here too.” Her
voice shook, the slight tremor more an indication of her rising worry. She released
Damien and went to the same corner. “It’s like dad but toned down.”
“Can you track him?” Damien asked.
“No,” Creed growled.
“He took Jennaveve and our father went after him, alone.
He’s our…brother,” Damien said in a barely there whisper.
Raina spun to face them, her hand going to her throat.
Creed flashed to her side. “She will not be your sniffing
“Our father has another son. Goddess, its messed up to even
say that. He’s the one who hurt Jenna. He nearly killed her the last time he had
his hands on her. Somehow that…bastard traced her back here and took her out
from under our noses. Now, our father is tracking them alone while we stand
here arguing. We can’t breach these walls, but you two can. You can sense him,
Raina. Please.” Lucas held his hand out, holding the pillow with Jenna’s scent
still on it.
“That’s why mother is hurting.” She moved forward, a tear
slipping down her cheek. “Creed, I can’t stand here and do nothing when my
family is falling apart.”
“Damn it, I knew this family stuff was going to be a pain in
my ass.” Creed jerked the fabric out of Lucas’s hand. “It’s the Fey Queen. I
can scent her as well. We go together, all of us on one condition.”
Lucas and Damian nodded, waiting.
“I’m in charge and Raina is not to be harmed.”
“Hellboy, you can call all the shots as long as we find our
Love.” There was nothing he wouldn’t
agree to in order to find Jenna.
“I’m so going to regret this.” Creed dropped his chin to his
Raina turned to face Creed.
Damien pointed at the two. “No making out with our sister in
front of us. Save it for the bedroom. Let’s go people, times a wasting.” He
changed into all black clothing, and although his words were teasing, the
hardness behind the tone was anything but.
“Can I eat them?” Creed asked.
Raina shook her head. “You promised to be nice to my
“Can I let Liv eat them?”
Their sister snorted. “No, you told her she couldn’t do that
either. Come on, boys. Let’s get this party started.”
Lucas focused on Jenna’s sweet smile and promised himself
they’d have her tucked between them soon. When he opened his eyes, his brother
was staring with that same single minded intent on his face. “We’ll get her
back and make sure she can’t escape without one of us always knowing where
she’s at.”
Raina snorted. “You two will learn, a woman like Jenna won’t
take to being caged or coddled.”
He met Creed’s dark stare. “How’s that working for you,
Creed lifted his middle finger. “You still wanting a way out
of here, or we gonna sling insults back and forth? Believe me, your little
nickname is nothing compared to the things I’ve been through and trust me, boy,
I’ve definitely had much bigger beings say much nastier things than that to
Instant regret punched him in the gut. “Damn it, I’m sorry
man. You’re right. Hellboy isn’t meant to be a…bad thing. Shit! I like you and
I think you’re great for our sister.”
His sister’s mate tilted his head and nodded. “Good enough.
Let’s go. One big circle like…well, one big happy family.”
Damien groaned. “Son of a bitch, not you, too.”
Their sister clapped like she was proud to be part of the
crazy, wrapping one arm around Creed and held the other out. He moved forward,
slipping his hand in hers, waiting for Damien to grab onto his other one.
Once they formed a circle, Creed’s lips formed a straight
line. “Here we go boys and my girl.”
Darkness came quickly. The opulent bedroom replaced by a
forest that had gone eerily quiet. Creed moved next to Raina, waving his hand
around her, changing the sexy dress she’d had on into all black, making her
resemble a character from the movie Underworld. He didn’t have time to question
the man as they all seemed to notice the unnatural quietness.
“Anyone know exactly where we are?” Damien’s voice echoed
around them.
Creed closed his eyes, then opened them quickly. “We’re
still on Earth. Something is unnatural here, but it’s not demon born.”

By A Charm And A Curse By Jaime Questell | Author Interview

Le Grand’s Carnival Fantastic isn’t like other traveling circuses. It’s bound by a charm, held together by a centuries-old curse, that protects its members from ever growing older or getting hurt. Emmaline King is drawn to the circus like a moth to a flame…and unwittingly recruited into its folds by a mysterious teen boy whose kiss is as cold as ice.

Forced to travel through Texas as the new Girl in the Box, Emmaline is completely trapped. Breaking the curse seems like her only chance at freedom, but with no curse, there’s no charm, either—dooming everyone who calls the Carnival Fantastic home. Including the boy she’s afraid she’s falling for.

Everything—including his life—could end with just one kiss.

Release Date: February 6th 2018  Amazon| Barnes & Noble

– Top 5 Things readers need to know about the book
1. This is my first novel published, but my third novel written.
2. I have four fabulous critique partners and this novel wouldn’t exist without them
3. This novel also wouldn’t exist without support from my family (seriously, it takes a village)
4. Leslie and Lars are kind of based on Leslie Knope (if Leslie were jaded after having lived for decades and decades) and Ron Swanson
5. Yes, Mrs. Potter totally go her name when I was stumped for a surname and happened to glance up and see my Harry Potter novels on my bookshelf
– Who/What was your inspiration for becoming a writer? How long have you been writing?
This will probably sound cheesy as all get out, but my best friend, Jeylan. She was writing a novel and when I told her that I was, too, she basically withheld her novel until I showed her mine. It sounds so cruel when I write it out, but if I hadn’t traded manuscripts with her, there’s a good chance CHARM would never have made it to this point.
– Which of your characters would you say you are most like?
I like to think I’m like Leslie, willing to make tough choices and something of a caretaker. But probably I’m also (at least a little bit) Whiskey, who lives life like she doesn’t owe anything to anyone.
– What (if anything) was your inspiration behind By A Charm And A Curse?
I first had an image of a girl falling from a great height while listening to Coin-Operated Boy by the Dresden Dolls, and I wrote a short story (what’s now chapter three, essentially) in one day while listening to that song on repeat. But as it grew into a novel, I was inspired by fairy tales and I wanted to try to invoke some of the same feelings a person has when they read those kinds of stories.
– If your book was to be turned into a movie who would you cast as your leads?
Taron Egerton for Ben and Kara Hayward for Emma. 🙂
– Did you have to research anything for your book?
I did! First I looked up vintage photos of circuses and carnivals, because I wanted LeGrand’s to feel like it had been around for ages. I also wanted inspiration for acts there would be in the carnival. Marcel is a knife thrower because of some of the fantastic pictures I found, and once I found a photo of a small girl (four or five) standing bareback on a horse, I knew I needed equestrians. There were a few things that didn’t make it; I really wanted to feature fire eaters more than what’s currently in there. And I also looked up circus jargon so I could pepper those in to make everything more grounded in reality.
– In 5 words how would you describe By A Charm And A Curse?
Cursed kisses and real-life magic.
– Which Hogwarts house would your main character be in?
Emma is a Slytherin, with a little bit of Gryffindor mixed in, but Ben is ALL Hufflepuff.
– What’s on your playlist? Does the music go with your book?
Music is super important to me when I write. Whenever I wrote Emma, I listened to this band called Kitten, their song Johnny, Johnny, Johnny in particular. And for Ben, it was The Rubens and their song Elvis. When I needed to capture the feel of the carnival in general, I’d go back to Coin-Operated Boy or Rasputina’s cover of Rock and Roll.

– There were a lot of awesome performers in Le Grand’s Carnival Fantastic, what would be your act if you were part of the carnival?
Um, so I’d really, really, really want to be a performer in a sparkly costume, but I know I’m uncoordinated and I’m better off slinging fried foods. 😀

Friday Reads | Prepping for My Blogiversary Edition

I have a lot of things I need to accomplish and a lot of the tasks on the list include preparing posts for my blogiversary and Down The Read-A-Thon Hole Challenge I am hosting! I have some DIYs, and pictures I need to complete as well as other end of the month wrap up posts. So it is definitely going to be a blog/Alice in Wonderland filled weekend. On top of that I have a lot of cleaning to do since I am going to have guests next week. But with all of this busy to do list I am hoping to get a ton of reading done as well.

I am almost finished listening to The Dazzling Heights by Katharine McGee, the second book in The Thousandth Floor trilogy. I am enjoying it so far, but I liked the first book a lot more than this one. It is filled with drama, deception and juicy gossip of course so it is definitely entertaining.

I also have made it about 30 pages into City of Blades by Robert Jackson Bennett. I had this book on my tbr like every month last year. I received it right when in was release back in like 2016 and was so excited for it because I loved City of Stairs! But it also made me nervous because it a fantasy novel that has a lot going on and the first book took me awhile to read it. I did have to read the last chapter of City of Stairs to refresh my memory. I really want to set aside some time to dive into this for sure this weekend.

Since I have a lot of cleaning, DIYing and blogging I will probably spend a lot of that time listening to an audiobook. I am just not sure which one yet, any suggestions?

What are you reading this weekend?
