July 2018 Reads | First Lines

I decided that it would be fun to start a new feature to add the the wrap up of books I read every month. For me most of the time I pick up and look at books in the store it is the first lines that capture my attention and draw me in. It has always been intriguing to me the amount of thought that must go into those first words the author decides to but as the introduction to their work. The first lines are your first impression of the book.

Bitten by Kelley Armstrong
“I have to.”

Asa by Jay Crownover
“Not too long ago when I watched a girl purposely get as drunk as this pretty one did, I would’ve moved in for the kill.”

Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson
“The list had arrived after Sloane had been gone two weeks.”

Built by Jay Crownover
“I met her at a bar.”

Rush by Kandi Steiner
“Palm South University. A small, private college tucked away in a shady haven right near the beach just south of Miami.”

Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli
“I don’t mean to be dramatic, but God save me from Morgan picking our set list.”

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han
“Josh is Margot’s boyfriend, but I guess you could say my whole family is a little in love with him.”

P.S I Still Love You by Jenny Han
“Dear Peter, I miss you.”

2018 Bookish Bucket List | July Update

Here goes year 4 doing this! And I think this is going to be the year I actually complete my bookish bucket list! I really want to throw myself back into the book community and blogging world, the past few years have been a little tough to get the reading done and last year I set high goals, but came up short.

♠ Read at least 75 books.
[I have brought my read count up to 34 (with 1 DNF) .According to Goodreads I am still behind where I need to be, but I’m not worried.]

♠ Read and Complete 10 Series.
[ I have completed 3 series so far! I am working on quite a few more. I have been really enjoying binge reading series! ]

♠ Read at least 6 BIG books. This is a repeat from last year.I feel like I am always so intrigued and interested in the huge books, but never get around to reading them because they are intimidating. (I am counting this as over 500 pages.)
[I have read 1 so far! ]

♠ Read 50 books from my TBR (#beatthebacklist)
[ So this is like a double because not all the books I read for #beatthebacklist are from my TBR. ]

TBR: 15   #Beatthebacklist: 31

♠ Read at least 5 Non-Fiction Books.
[I have such a long list of nonfiction books I want to read I just need to start it or I never will]

♠ Post 3 Reviews a Month.
[ I have fallen really behind on this. I have been trying to focus more time on reading with the free time I have and just write reviews for books I have a lot of thoughts on or I am reviewing.]

♠ Create or Join A Book Club.
[ I really haven’t done this. I have just been such a mood reader lately it is hard.]

♠ Create my Own Read-A-Thon.  I want to create something that will become a yearly thing and go along with my blogiversary!
[ That happened in Feb! Check out the announcement post for my Down The Read-A-Thon Hole Challenge| Alice in Wonderland themed Read-A-Thon]

What are some of your 2018 goals/resolutions? How are you doing on them?

Vacation Reading | TBR

So usually I share my TBRs on instagram lately, but thought I would share this time on the blog as well! I am going camping in South Dakota with my parents and although we have a packed schedule of sight seeing and doing the whole touristy thing, I am hoping to do lots of reading as well! I will have a lot of time in the car as we travel and have some audiobooks as wells as physical/ebooks I really want to read!

♦ Turtles All The Way Down by John Green
I have started this book and I have enjoyed it so far. I have just had book ADD and have been juggling like 10 books so it has been put to the side lately. I am really hoping to finish reading this.

♦ Special Beta Reading Project!
One of my lovely book friends wrote a book and I have been beta reading her book! I have made it a little over halfway through it so far and I am really enjoying it! I am going to finish this on vacation for sure!

♦ Charged & Riveted by Jay Crownover
The past few months I have been devouring the Marked Men series by Jay Crownover and immediately jumped into the spin off series Saints of Denver. Charged is thf e second book in the spin off series and I am about 1/3 of the way through the audiobook! I can read in the car and we have a 9 hour drive so I am hoping to listen to a few audiobooks!

♦ Keeper of the Bees by Meg Kassel
Earlier in the year I read the first book in this series Black Birds of the Gallows. I am interested to see what Kassel does with this story as I was not aware there would be another book. It is also part of my ARC August TBR since it comes out in September!

♦ Afterimage by Naomi Huges
This is also an ARC I received that comes out in September. I do not know much about it but it seems interesting. It is also a physical book and sometimes they are easier for me to read over ebooks.

♦ The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken
I know I cant believe I havent read this book either. With the release of the movie so close I need to read this book ASAP!

I will only be gone for 8 days but you can never be too prepared right? Have you read any of these books? I would love to hear thoughts or know what you are reading!

Bring Me Their Hearts by Sara Wolf | ARC Review

Genre: YA, Fantasy

Publication Date: June 5, 2018

Source: Entangled Publishing

Zera is a Heartless – the immortal, unageing soldier of a witch. Bound to the witch Nightsinger ever since she saved her from the bandits who murdered her family, Zera longs for freedom from the woods they hide in. With her heart in a jar under Nightsinger’s control, she serves the witch unquestioningly.

Until Nightsinger asks Zera for a Prince’s heart in exchange for her own, with one addendum; if she’s discovered infiltrating the court, Nightsinger will destroy her heart rather than see her tortured by the witch-hating nobles.

Crown Prince Lucien d’Malvane hates the royal court as much as it loves him – every tutor too afraid to correct him and every girl jockeying for a place at his darkly handsome side. No one can challenge him – until the arrival of Lady Zera. She’s inelegant, smart-mouthed, carefree, and out for his blood. The Prince’s honor has him quickly aiming for her throat.

So begins a game of cat and mouse between a girl with nothing to lose and a boy who has it all.

Winner takes the loser’s heart.

Goodreads | Amazon

I do not even know how to write this review because I have so many thoughts and feels about this book. Let me start by saying this book was so unique and has for sure made it to my top favorites of the year, if not the top spot. It had everything I love in a good fantasy, an interesting world, paranormal/magical elements, and characters with such big personalities. This book had not only a great storyline/plot that had you wanting to know what was going to happen next but it also had such well developed and unique characters. There was so much work put into the characters that even the side characters or ones that made small appearances had me having so many feels about them. There were many twists and turns in the story and I was always guessing where it was going to go. Wolf put so much backstory into the book as well that I didn’t ever feel like I didn’t understand what was going on. Especially with the new idea/paranormal creature known as the heartless.

I loved what Wolf did with the paranormal/fantastical characters, she really made them her own. She took the commonly known idea of a witch and turn it upside down. Creating a society of witches and heartless that are at war with the humans. I really enjoyed the play on the “witch hunt” idea and it was so cool to see it play out in a fantasy setting. I am also a big fan of the big dresses and courtly intrigue.

Now let me tell you all about these characters! Zera was my favorite kind of female lead. She is strong headed, snarky and all about being her own person. She is dealing with her personal struggles, but also has such a big heart (for a heartless) and care so much about others. Lucien was a surprising character and definitely caught me off guard multiple times. I really enjoyed the kind of person he is and how he follows his own way of life. The romance was a nice slow burn and everything you want from a enemies romance.

I just cannot get over how much I enjoyed this book. It took me awhile to read it because I didnt want it to end. It pulled me out of a book slump and I was so happy that I read it before many other people because I was able to completely create me own opinions and enjoy for a short time my own feelings before others started to share thoughts (one of the best thing about reading ARCs) But now I want all the people to read an experience this amazing book so I have others to talk about it with. I absolutely love the idea of the heartless and cannot wait to read more about Zera when book 2 comes out!

Friday Reads {one day late} | Lazy Weekend Plans

So this is coming a day late, oops. I was quite busy yesterday and didn’t get a chance to write a post (mostly due to the fact that my computer was dead).I am in the middle of a couple different books, which should be of no surprise to anyone who has read my posts before. Last weekend at the pool I started Turtles All The Way Down by John Green. Now if you have seen any of my reviews/posts that I have written about John Green before, I find a lot of his characters in the books pretentious and acting/speaking out of their age. With that being said Looking For Alaska by John Green is one of my favorite books. So I am giving TATWD a chance and so far I am enjoying it and love that their is a mystery type story line taking place. I am also continuing on with my Jay Crownover binge (its my goal to read all the books she has published by the end of this year) by listening to the audiobook of Charged, the second book in the Saints of Denver series, which is a spin off series of the Marked Men Series.

In other exciting news I have been working on beta reading a book written by a friend from the book community. I am about a third of the way through and hoping to get a lot of it read this weekend so I can give some feedback in order to help her with her journey to publishing her book!

After finishing these books I hope to continue on with the Saints of Denver series by listening to the audiobook of Riveted by Jay Crownover. I also really want to pick up The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken before the movie comes out on Aug 3rd. I know what you are thinking, I cannot believe I haven’t read this book or the rest of the trilogy yet either.

What are you reading this weekend?

Things I Love | June Favorites

Here are some of my favorite things that I discovered, got or was just obsessed with in the month of June!

I had the chance to see Ke$ha perform with Macklemore in Kansas City this month and it just reiterated my love of her and her music. I purchased the Rainbow album on vinyl this month and have played it almost everyday since I got it!

I had the chance to go home for a week to visit my family and attend my little brothers wedding. One of my best friends made the trip up north for the wedding and knows how much I love Alice in Wonderland. She got this beautiful edition and I am obsessed!

These next two products I received in my June Ipsy Glam Bag. I was hesitant about the Pacifica Tomboy Vibe eyeshadow platte when I saw the preview online, but I absolutely adore it in person. I am still not sold on the green color, but the orange brown colors do wonders for my blue eyes! It is also 100% vegan and cruelty free so that is a win! The second product in a Pure Brazilian Leave In Conditioner. I have struggled to find a leave in conditioner that doesnt make my hair feel greasy/oily after its applied. My hair also gets extremely tangly. This conditioner is a spray so it goes on light and manages to keep my hair sleek and straight with little to no tangles.

What are some of your favorite things from the past month?

2018 Beat The Backlist Challenge |June Update

I have some really big goals for myself with this new year, both personally and with regards to books. This will be the first year that I will be in one place (hopefully) not juggling school or the constant traveling I have experience that past few years. I am really trying to focus on myself and trying to limit distractions and drama. One of my biggest book goals next year is to read the books I own and definitely catch up on series I am so far behind on or that I need to read. (Shoutout to Alex @ Booksy Daisy for posting her tbr and convincing me to do this!) Beat the Backlist hosted by Novel knight is the perfect challenge. (I do better when I am able to mark off a list so challenges work so well for me) Now I cannot make promises that the books I list are going to be the ones I actually read, but it is the goal to get these ones specifically. I am setting myself the goal of 50 books! I haven’t decided what I want my year goal to be, but with the hopes of tackling the books on my shelf I definitely want to focus more on the backlist and older books!

  • The challenge will run from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2018.
  • Books must be released prior to 2018 to count for this challenge.
