I hope everyone has been reading lots! Today is the last day in Bout of Books and time to wrap up and finish all the books! To give you a break between all the reading here is a challenge for you to complete about 5 books you would want with you as the end of the world is coming! Here is the scenario! I hope you enjoy the challenge!
It is 11:00 PM on a Sunday night. You are laying in bed thinking about all of the things you must do the next day. Tasks of the coming days consume your thoughts and while your mind is somewhere else you are caught off guard by a flash in the sky that is followed by a large wailing screech that pierces the air and shatters your bedroom window. Slowly you move to the window and what you see catches your breathe and causes you to stumble back a few steps. The aliens (at least you think they are aliens) have began to enter the city and destroy everything that is in their path. Through the window your view is consumed with destruction, screaming people and large flames that are dancing across the city at a fast pace. You notice that the creatures are heading in your direction and you realize you probably have about fifteen minutes before they reach your home. That means you have only about ten minutes to gather your belongings and escape before you are caught in the attack from the aliens invading the city.
Given the short amount of time you are only able to take 5 books with you. What books would you pick to take with you as you escape and prepare for the end of the world. Would you choose books that would help you survive in the post-apocalyptic world ,books for pleasure that would make you happy and take you to a fantasy reality or books that you can’t live without?
My list:
♠ War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells – I feel like this book covers a very similar situation and could possible provide me with the knowledge to survive!
♠ The Adventure of Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll- This is one of my all time favorite books and just makes me happy. I feel like I would need this to keep my mind off of what is happening in the world and be able to take me to another reality, even if its just for a little bit. Also my edition of this book is the Barnes and Noble Collectors Ed. and it is huge! So maybe I would be able to use it as a weapon.
♠ World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks- To remind me that life could be worse and there could be flesh eating zombies infesting and attacking the world.
♠ Under the Dome by Stephen King- I haven’t read this book, but I figured I would need something that was new to me and give me something to take my mind off the impending doom of the world. Also this is another book in which the characters are placed in a unwanted situation and would remind me of the other situations I could be in.
♠ White Hot Kiss by Jennifer L. Armentrout- This is a fantastic book and has swoon worthy guys and is just so wonderful. It would me make happy and thinking of the good instead of the bad.
Please let me know what you think of this challenge and link or comment about your list below! I would love to hear about what books (and why) everyone else would choose!

This was fun and rather easy for me! Though I did cheat a little and pick seven but it was a family series and I just could pick which ones to leave!
Thanks for hosting!
I’m glad you enjoyed it !
My reading just hasn’t happened. The book k started be read a thon with put me in a reading slump and where I thought I’d read during my LONG travel home, I spent it trying to calm myself down, sort out my fear of flying and sort my body clock out by trying to sleep. So I read like a page during the entire time I travelled home =/
BUT BUT BUT harry potter is SEVEN books, how am i supposed to choose only five?
D:
WOAH this is gonna be so fun!!
So firstly I would take a book relating to how to survive in the wilderness, for example “Wilderness Living & Survival Skills” by J.G.McPherson, then a book that teaches us about what plants/berries etc. are poisonous – Common Poisonous Plants and Mushrooms of North America by N.J.Turner! (These two just in case I was forced to escape to a forest etc.) then I would grab Insurgent by V.Roth because I think Tris is such a brave, kick-ass character that would motivate me to try things I normally wouldn’t and encourage me. Then I’d grab Fangirl by R.Rowell because it’s such a cute read and I’d like to have some “light reading” with me. And finally I’d take Gracelling by K.Cashore, because it’s fantasy and it might distract me from what’s happening in OUR world and I would be able to dive into THEIR world. Plus it’s action-packed and Katsa is kick-ass too, haha! 🙂 Sooo those are the books I’d grab if the invasion occured. 🙂
Great list! I thought about real survival books, but figured I would rather have fictional worlds and characters! haha
I just wanted to let you know that I nominated you for the Liebster Award survey thing! 🙂
http://fortheloveofthepage.wordpress.com/2014/08/24/the-liebster-award/
Thanks!
Here you can find my picks 😀 http://thedailyprophecy.blogspot.nl/2014/08/bout-of-books-updates.html Such a fun challenge and I like the story why we need to pick them.
Thank you! I had to rewrite it like 5 times because I couldn’t decide what event I wanted to take place to bring about the apocalypse and end of the world!
What a great idea! It was so hard to just pick three as you can see at my blog post here http://aliteraturelifestyle.blogspot.com.au/2014/08/bout-of-books-challenge-7.html
I had a hard time trying to decided and pick just the five as well! Awesome list! I have never read or really heard of the Tomorrow When the War Began series. I will have to check it out!
This was really challenging!! I had quite a tough time coming up with only five books (HARRY POTTER!!! *flailing*). But here is my list:
http://radiantreads.wordpress.com/2014/08/24/bout-of-books-11-0-friday-update-challenge/
I had a lot of fun in this challenge! Check out my the five books that I chose: http://perusingbookshelves.weebly.com/book-corner/5-book-challenge-post-apocalyptic-edition
Probably one of the most fun challenges yet!
This is a tough question!
I think I’d bring When All Hell Breaks Loose (just to be a reasonable person, though I had to google survival books haha), Lord of the Rings (because it’s my antidrug), House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski, Orlando by Virginia Woolf, and maybe Moby Dick (because I’ve always been meaning to read it).
http://outlandishlit.blogspot.com/
Great list! I have really been wanting to read House of Leaves!
http://thereadingwench.wordpress.com/2014/08/24/bout-of-books-5-book-challenge/
Here is my post! That is really hard to narrow it down to only 5 but I managed! Amazing challenge! Good way to end the week!
http://covertoocover.wordpress.com/2014/08/24/bout-of-books-5-book-challenge/
This was fun! I picked mainly my favorite books.
http://pucksandpaperbacks.wordpress.com/2014/08/24/bout-of-books-day-7-the-last-challenge/
Wow. I think I would have to forgo pleasure books and take practical treatises. I would want
an encyclopedic natural medicine book (e.g. how to make willow bark tea, etc)
a book about hunting without guns (maybe that had pictures of how to make snares are where to place them, how to create traps, etc)
a book about how to live outdoors with rough camping facilities (how to successfully bank a fire, may a shelter with branches)
a general first aid book
a book about how to repair engines (because eventually all the mechanical things are going to break, right?!)
then I would bawl, because I wouldn’t have any pleasure books, which would make me so despondent!!
Great choices. Although you don’t have any pleasure books you will probably survive over the rest of us haha.
I like doing binges of the same theme. I loved Alice!
Missie @ A Flurry of Ponderings
Alright, here’s my list: http://calumhoodiee.tumblr.com/post/95645977982/bout-of-books-day-7-challenge
See which five Harry Potter books I chose.
As a bonus, I also picked five non-Harry Potter books.
This was a fun one!
My list is over here: http://readingthething.wordpress.com/2014/08/24/bout-of-books-day-seven-5-book-challenge-post-apoctolyptic-edition/
In reality I’d probably take my kindle along. ALL THE BOOKS! 😉
The Kindle would definitely probably be something I grabbed if this were to happen!
I found the first 4 rather easy but the last one, wow that was hard. Here is mine!
http://jazminjade.wordpress.com/2014/08/25/bout-of-books-11-0-day-7-challenges-wrap-up/
This was fun! Here are my choices: http://papeiseletras.blogspot.pt/2014/08/5-book-challenge-post-apocalyptic.html
Wonderful choices!
Such a super fun challenge!! I had to really give this some thought since I thought it would be cheating if I said I would just grab my kindle so here you go…
http://bookbitereviews.blogspot.com/2014/08/bout-of-books-sundays-challenge.html
Some great picks! I need to start the Lux series soon!
That was a load of fun. It is hard to select only 5 books though! Here is my list! http://panalchemist.blogspot.com/2014/08/5-book-challenge-post-apoctolyptic.html
Thanks for the fun afternoon!
Those are some fantastic picks! I have seen a few people who have selected Tomorrow When the War Began…I need to check this book out!
That was fun!:) It was kinda easy for me cause i already have a few set aside for the day the zombies come alive. but here is mine http://superbookgrl13.blogspot.com/2014/08/bob-day-7-challenge.html
I feel like I need to have a set up for when the end of the world does happen…Maybe I should just make an underground bunker, there are tv shows where people do that ! Than I can just keep all my books there!
Wow, this is hard! I’ll try, but I have no idea how I can pick only 5 books 😁
1) The Stand by Stephen King because it’s long and I’m sure I’ll have some spare time now and I’ve never read it!
2) Slammed by Colleen Hoover because this book is just amazing.
3) Hunger Games because this is one of my favorite books and I could be like Katniss and survive!
4) 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami because what better time to read a deep thinking confusing book!
5) Stiff by Mary Roach because maybe I should start reading and learning about dead bodies. Yikes!
Happy end of Bout of Books everyone!!
Fantastic list! It seems like a lot of people are choosing The Hunger Games ! If only we could all be a kick ass as Katniss!
1. Fire and Hemlock by Diana Wynne JonesーThis is my favourite book of all time, and though I’d be tempted to take all the versions I own of it, I would just take the HC, so it would last longer.
2. The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre DumasーOne of my favourite literary themes is revenge. Maybe that isn’t healthy, but I think it’s a great driving motivational force.
3. Saga by Brian K. VaughanーMaybe as a reminder that otherworldly beings may not be all bad and have lives too. But also because maybe I will wanna vegetate and look at some pictures.
4. Jurassic Park by Michael CrichtonーThis is a story about survival in the face of scientific error. Something about this comforts me.
5. Extreme Survival GuideーI actually own this army-camouflaged book. I bought it as a joke for an Apocalypse party I threw back in 2012. It’s quite compact and looks like it could be useful, and if not then…kindling?
I love your reasons for why you would take each book! Awesome list!
This was definitely hard to only pick five books, but I have decided and I think they would suffice.
http://nayspinkbookshelf.blogspot.com/2014/08/bout-of-books-challenge-5-books.html
This was definitely a true challenge for me!
Well I am glad you were able to create a list! It has some great choices!
1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Because classic literature shouldn’t be lost.
2. The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. See above reasoning.
3. La Sobra del Viento por Carols Luis Zafron. To preserve other languages.
4. Hatchet by Gary Paulson. It’s a survival guide of sorts.
5. The King James Bible. For comfort.
Very solid choices!
It was soooo difficult to select only 5 books to take with me!! I kept changing my list up!! Visit my blog to see which books I’ve selected! http://captivatedreader.blogspot.com/2014/08/bout-of-books-day-7-5-book-challenge.html
This was difficult but very fun! Here’s my list: http://bookfluke.blogspot.com/2014/08/bout-of-books-110-day-1.html
Im glad you enjoyed it. Super list!
That was fun! 🙂 Really got me into thinking… here’s my list:
http://beccabooklover.blogspot.de/2014/08/bout-of-books-110-5-book-challenge.html
Great list! I enjoyed your thoughts and explanations for each book!
Wow this was definitely hard to choose just 5 but I would choose:
#1 my bible – obvious
#2, #3, #4 Hunger Games, Catching Fire, Mockingjay – It’s a complete series that I could read over and over for entertainment
#5 Landline -because I love Rainbow Rowell, just picked up this book yesterday and would be so sad not to read it
I know I would never be able to take just five! Those are some great choices! I have yet to read a Rainbow Rowell book, but I do own Landline!
This was a lot of fun and I’m happy to have done this challenge! Here is my link: http://alithebooklover.booklikes.com/post/964470/day-7-last-day-for-bout-of-books-sad-face

Great list ! And I love the pictures of your cats! I would have a hard time choosing between my books and my cats but my cats would win out!
Great and difficult challenge! Here is the link to mine: http://floodbooks.blogspot.com/2014/08/bout-of-books-day-7-update.html I picked the Bible, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Pride and Prejudice, The Peterson’s Field Guide to Edible Plants, and Landline, since I needed at least one book I have not read. Thanks for hosting!
Thank you for sharing your list and participating!
I love this challenge! It is a hard one, but fun!
Here is my list of 5 books: http://liber-amans.blogspot.pt/2014/08/bout-of-books-5-books-challenge.html
Im glad you enjoyed it! Wonderful list!
I really enjoyed this challenge, one of my favorites!
Mines posted at The Story Goes…
Thanks I am so glad you enjoyed it!
The more logical part of my brain is telling me that I should choose books that could help me survive on the run because, lets face it, I probably would not last very long. However, the other part is saying that choosing books I thoroughly enjoy—ones that never fail to put me in a good mood—would lead to a much better (and very brief) experience. So, going off of the latter, I would chose…
1. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling: For obvious reasons.
2. The Maze Runner by James Dashner
3. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll: These stories are two of my all-time favorites, and I would hate to be stuck in a post-apocalyptic, alien-infested world without them.
4. The Complete Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis: Who wouldn’t want a little fictional magic to take their mind off of impending doom? Also, it’s a bind-up of the entire series!
5. Percy Jackson & The Olympians, The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan: Another one of my absolute favorites; a book that I possess fond memories of because it was a gateway to an amazing reading adventure.
Some awesome books on this list! I love Alice in Wonderland !
Very fun, although very difficult to choose. Lol! My pict and list is here: http://wishfulendings.tumblr.com/post/95676072490/boutofbooks-challenge-over-at-falling-down-the. I picked two health/preparedness books, my scriptures, and two books to make me happy and laugh that I could read a million times over. 🙂
I did a blog post http://creativetripletmomreads.blogspot.com/2014/08/bout-of-books-110-update-6.html
Great idea for a really accessible challenge! It was difficult but here’s my list http://zebravert.blogspot.co.uk/2014/08/5-books-challenge.html
I know my list would change every year, based on my current fav books. The only ones I know for sure would always make the list would be Twilight and something by Colleen Hoover. Very fun challenge! Here’s mine: http://wp.me/p4ty9K-oC
Loved this challenge! Very fun.
Here’s mine: http://www.bittersweet-enchantment.com/2014/08/bout-of-books-read-thon-11-goals-updates.html – found at the end of the post
I really liked this challenge, it was fun and really made me think! Here’s my post for this challenge 🙂 http://nikkitheknack.blogspot.ca/2014/08/5-book-challenge-post-apocalyptic.html
Im glad you enjoyed it! Great list of books!
Fun! Here are my five.
1. The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay. It’s my favorite book and my mom’s favorite book, the story of a boy surviving and being strong in the face of great pain and abuse. I’d need something to remind me to be strong and stand tall.
2. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. In this new world, I will need to tell my story. Liesel is a great reminder on what it means to tell your story and how writing has the power to save.
3. What Women Fear by Angie Smith. Everyone needs a good reminder of how to act when you’re afraid, and this is a book that speaks to me so deeply.
4. Bossypants by Tina Fey. For those days when I just need a smile and a little bit of laughter to get me through, or for days when it feels like everything is going well.
5. Fall of Giants by Ken Follett. I haven’t read this one yet and it’s been on my shelves for a while, so I plan on bringing it with me for something long and meaty to read.
Thanks for participating! Fantastic list!
I picked War of the Worlds too. I also picked three books where nature is a theme with two of those books with some survival tactics in them. My last book was a book I can escape to. Really liked this challenge! My challenge: http://shesgotbooksonhermind.blogspot.com/2014/08/bout-of-books-110-day-7-challenges.html
My books were mainly comfort-dominated, I think.
