I feel like I fall into that category of people that when I am asked who is my favorite fierce female in a book, the answer is always some kickass female that can fight or yield a weapon. Most likely one from a fantasy or urban fantasy story. But I have read quite a few contemporary books this year and last that have showcased the modern day fierce female. Especially in the political climate that exists in our country these days, woman have shown that being fierce is more than just being able to physically kickass. I wanted to take a look at modern day fierce females!

When I think about those fierce females in real life the names that come to mind are those who fight for what they believe in no matter what others think. They empower other woman and are such an inspiration, never giving up the fight for women and their rights. For example, when I think fierce females a picture of Ruth Bader Ginsburg comes to mind!

She proves that you don’t need to be able to slay vampires, yield a bow or sword or take someone down in a physical fight. It is with her mind, actions and words that are making a difference! Whether it be standing up for your beliefs, fighting for a cause or your rights, or even proving that a girl can rock it in an industry dominated by men, modern day women are as fierce as they come!

So I thought I would share those modern day fierce females from the books I have read in the past year or so!

A Look at Modern Day Fierce Females

Layla Amin

For being so young, Layla proves to be so brave and have great strength. She is willing to risk her life for the others stuck in the internment camp and reveal to the country what is really happening. I feel like Ahmed did a great job with Layla’s character development and made her such a complex character. She had many battles to face and did so with such determination. She was not the only one who risked her life for the cause.

Jasmine

Jasmine is trying to find her own now that her brother is gone. Many people, her mother included are not following up on solving the mystery of who killed her brother and what happened. She doesn’t like the street world scare her as she goes out looking for answers. Jasmine is also quite the rapper!

Starr

After having to experience the death of her friend, Starr has to navigate the aftermath and the fight against the police. She speaks out about the unwarranted death of her unarmed friend and participates in a protest. Starr has so much strength and deals with so much in the place and world she lives in. Her fierceness shows through in the way she handles all the situations thrown at her.

Bri

Bri’s story is so inspirational. She strives and fights hard for her dreams of being a rapper. She breaks down the stereotypes and works hard to prove everyone wrong. Also facing the struggle of poverty and possible homelessness, Bri never wavers and stays fierce!

Vivian Carter

Viv is sick of the way girls are being treated and sexualized at school. She along with some other females start a feminist protest in school to stand up for what they believe in. Helping to empower and inspire other women in a revolution!
