Publication Date: May 18th 2020
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Series : Forgotten Brotherhood
Synopsis:
Being immortal doesn’t mean you can’t die. It just means you’re damn hard to kill.
When Alexei Medvedev joined the Forgotten Brotherhood — paranormals hired to assassinate other paranormals — he knew it wouldn’t be a cake walk. But his next target is one of Death’s own Reapers gone rogue. For the first time since he started this gig, “damn hard to kill” feels more like “damn near impossible.”
Tracking Cassie Dobbs brings him to a remote bar in small-town Alaska, where this hot-as-hell Reaper is casually serving drinks, as if she doesn’t have a bounty on her head from Death himself. Alexei is dangerously intrigued. Everyone in the Brotherhood knows the first rule: don’t fall for your target.
But Alexei soon has bigger problems to face than an unexpected attraction. They only send assassins after those who deserve to die…or so he’s been made to believe. Now that he’s met Cassie, though, he’s not so sure.
What if everything he’s been told is a lie, and the person he’s been sent to kill is the only one who knows the truth?

“-extremely dangerous loners with loyalty to no one.”
Another steamy paranormal romance from N.J Walters that has a great silent and strong type character that you cannot help but fall in love with!
This book had me at polar bear shifter and run away reaper. After reading Fury Unleashed by N.J Walters I was so excited to get the chance to read this book and I was not disappointed. Learning more about the Forgotten Brotherhood and getting a greater look into this paranormal world Walters is creating, this book did not fall prey to second book syndrome. Although these are marketed as standalone books, I would recommend reading them in order for a better understanding of the background.
” Some paranormals were masters in deception, monsters hiding behind a pretty face.”
I have to admit, Alexei really won me over in this story! He is everything I love in a male character, he is broody, an assassin and ultimately protective and adorable. Given his background and the story about how he came about joining up with the Forgotten Brotherhood made me love him even more. Then you have Cassie, who is one kickass chick ! I enjoyed learning about her past and her being a reaper. I feel like that is one paranormal creature we do not get much of in books and it was intriguing. The small twists we got with her character were entertaining as well. Their interactions together were also well done. How gentle he was with her and their concern of hurting each other was perfect! I enjoyed the chemistry they had and the quippy banter moments. I do have to admit I thought it was a little insta-lovey and did not enjoy that. I felt like this could have been fleshed out a little more to be a hate to love or a little more lusty. That was what put me off and why it did not get the whole 5 stars.
One of my favorite things in this book, besides Alexei, was the setting. Cassie had run away to Alaska, like what a better place for a polar bear shifter! I enjoyed the descriptions of Alexei’s home and was intrigued by the vibe and feel Walters was conveying.
” He made her feel precious, as though she mattered.”
Overall I think Walters knocked it out of the park for me with this one. Although I enjoyed the first book in this series, this one really did it for me. I absolutely loved the characters, how they interacted and their chemistry! I think the choice of paranormal creature pairings was something so unique and the incorporation of reapers and death was something I have never read before! I loved how although this can be read as a standalone, Walters didn’t slack on continuing to grow the world and the overall arching plot line! I did find it insta-lovey, but ultimately found the relationship to be one of my favorites that I have read in awhile. I flew through this book, needing more and on the edge of my seat at parts. The twists at the end were great and I can’t wait to see where this series goes!
