The book Divergent follows the lead of many new trending books appearing on the “best-selling” to movie track. Roth does a fantastic job of presenting a “new” world in which society is divided by turmoil and is on the brink of erupting. In this new age society all citizens are divided into what are referred to as fractions. At 16 each child must decide whether to stay within the faction they were born into or leave. Leaving would mean starting all over and leaving their family behind. The young girl Tris (Beatrice) goes through the life changing formation and troubles of leaving her family and faction behind. To start  a new life of her own, in search for a place where she will belong.

I thought Roth did an excellent job portraying the different factions. By differentiating them by personalities, clothes, jobs and even the way they lived their lives. The term “divergent” is meant to refer to those who have aptitudes for more than one faction. I was highly intrigued that at the end of the book it seemed that even though being  “divergent” was seen as a bad thing. Many people seemed to carry those traits. It is much like the world in which we live in today, many people carry various traits and attributes that allow them to apply themselves into many different subjects and task and I feel like that allows for many people to resonate with the characters in this piece of literature.

As I was reading through the book, at first I associated myself with one faction. The dauntless, but as I went on it became apparent that I contain qualities from each of the other factions; erudite, candor, amity and abnegation. For me, a big part of enjoying a piece of work is the ability it allows me to feel like I am actually in the book. And have that connection to the events that are going on.

So as I have never lived in the world described in Divergent, while I was reading it I seemed to lose myself within the book until I put it down again and reality slowly set back in .That is a great quality of a book to bear. Following the trials and growth of Tris engulfed my being for that time I spent reading the book. For that time, I belonged in a world which was not my own and it was incredible.
