“By the way, my name’s Rose Hathaway. I’m seventeen years old, training to protect and kill vampires, in love with a completely unsuitable guy, and have a best friend whose weird magic could drive her crazy.
Hey, no one said high school was easy.”
– Richelle Mead, Frostbite
Series: Vampire Academy
Vampire Academy (#1 in Vampire Academy)
Synopsis:
Rose loves Dimitri, Dimitri might love Tasha, and Mason would die to be with Rose…
It’s winter break at St. Vladimir’s, but Rose is feeling anything but festive. A massive Strigoi attack has put the school on high alert, and now the Academy’s crawling with Guardians—including Rose’s hard-hitting mother, Janine Hathaway. And if hand-to-hand combat with her mom wasn’t bad enough, Rose’s tutor Dimitri has his eye on someone else, her friend Mason’s got a huge crush on her, and Rose keeps getting stuck in Lissa’s head while she’s making out with her boyfriend, Christian! The Strigoi are closing in, and the Academy’s not taking any risks… This year, St. Vlad’s annual holiday ski trip is mandatory.
But the glittering winter landscape and the posh Idaho resort only create the illusion of safety. When three friends run away in an offensive move against the deadly Strigoi, Rose must join forces with Christian to rescue them. But heroism rarely comes without a price…[Goodreads]
I LOVE ROSE!!! She is the best narrator! She is so badass and snarky it makes for great storytelling and comical narrative. I am not typically a fan of first person, but the way in which Mead does this is brilliant. I understand the reasons for recapping somethings because it is suppose to be like Rose telling the story, but I think it messes with the fluidity of the novels. The way in which one flows into the other is amazing and it makes it seem like one long continuation of the story.
I still have to admit that this is my favorite vampire series. There is so much depth and thought put into the storyline and development of the vampire world. I was sad that there was not much of interaction between Lissa and Rose in this book, but loved that you really got to see Rose grow and go through her own personal struggles beside being worried about Lissa the whole time. The relationship between Rose and Dimitri remains my favorite and this book cemented that even further.
“You can’t force love, I realized. It’s there or it isn’t. If it’s not there, you’ve got to be able to admit it. If it is there, you’ve got to do whatever it takes to protect the ones you love.”
I feel really bad for Mason in this and you really get that guilt that Rose feels about her relationship with him. It is conveyed beautifully and her reaction to his death was absolutely heartbreaking. (Even though I had it spoiled for me) With the appearance of Adrian, who is wonderfully charming as well as the perfect asshole male character. Lissa finally starts to accept her fate and understands that being on pills is the best thing for her. With this new developments and secrets are also revealed that causes intrigue to the case of what actually happened between Rose and Lissa. With all this new growth and realization of just how reckless she has been and the after affects of Mason’s death and her earning her Molnija, I just hope that Rose doesn’t change too much. I love the confident, empowered girl that she is a lot.
On that note I will be continuing on with the story of Rose and Lissa as I marathon the Vampire Academy series!!! ( So far it has been 3 days, lets see how long it takes me to finish them all)
