As I get older, I feel that my holiday traditions change and evolve. I miss the times of waiting for Santa to show up and trying to catch the Reindeer on the roof. I’ve never been a super big fan of Christmas, I associate very much so with the Grinch. I have always enjoyed the holiday season though, the food, the family and of course the lights. I am a sucker for the lights.
But as you grow up, move out from your parents house and live multiple states away from your family, the holiday season never seems to be the same. With work and the cost of travel it makes going home difficult. Last Christmas was the first time I had been on my own and away from family. It was an extremely different experience and lost a lot of what makes the holiday season great. Because of that I have had to start making new traditions as I go into my second year away from family and on my own on Christmas.
The result from creating my own traditions revolves very much around baking and reading of course. I enjoy baking very much and it seems like the perfect time of year to pull of the mixer and whip up some holiday treats. Besides munching on my favorite gourmet popcorn from Target that comes out this time of the year, reindeer chow mix and cookies make the perfect sweet treat to accompany reading and binging on Christmas movies.
Butterscotch Cornflake Cookies will always remind me of the holiday season and especially my Grandmother. It was with her and my mom that I first made these cookies and what I crave every time this year! They are super simple to make and can be a great family activity. Another fun thing to make if you have little ones running around is Reindeer Chow Mix. This is great for holiday parties, movie watching or curled up on the couch reading snack!
So other than the baking (which I am hoping to be able to post some pictures of my holiday baking creations at some point either in a post or on my instagram!) I try to do tons of end of the year reading! To help with this last year I did a 24 hour Christmas Eve read-a-thon and plan to do it again this year! Last year it was a day filled with Cocoa, cookies and cuddly blankets.
Then there is the Christmas movie binge! Do you have a go to holiday/Christmas movie you have to watch every year? Of course there are the classics, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, Santa Claus 1-3, Home Alone, The Polar Express and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Some of my favorites and must watch Christmas movies are Elf, The Christmas Story, Eloise at Christmastime, Its A Wonderful Life and although it is not really a Christmas movie I watch Meet Me In St Louis this time of year!
So what are some of your holiday traditions? Is there something your family does every year? Have you started any new traditions? Do you do any holiday baking? Or Holiday eating? What are your favorite holiday snacks? Do you binge watch Christmas movies, do you have a must watch? I would love to hear more!
