It’s The Final Girls For Me… Ever since I was younger I have been a fan of horror movies, especially slashers. I remember one Halloween when I was in High School being too old to trick or treat, I stayed home alone and watched all of the Halloween movies. Michael Myers is my favorite slasher! Well the one thing all slasher movies have is a final girl, the one that manages to make it through all the horror and survive the onslaught brought on by damaged villain…the slasher! Thats why in the horror books I read it’s the final girls for me! So what better way to start October off by sharing some final girl-esq book recommendations with everyone!
It’s The Final Girls For Me Book Recommendations
How To Survive Your Murder by Danielle Valentine
This is the most recent book I just read and it surprised me. I loved that it was based in Omaha Nebraska (if you know anything about me I just moved but spent 4.5 years living there) and I totally understood some of the references so that was fun. Our main character Alice is obsessed with horror movies so it’s no surprise she finds herself in the middle of a real life horror situation. All the pop culture references and comparisons to final girls and slashers films really pulled me into this story.
The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix
What happens to the final girls after the cameras, sirens and attention go away, well they join a final girl support group. This was such an intriguing concept and exploration into the life of a final girl after the event. But of course no final girl is safe because someone is after the final girls. Who will be the final of the final girls? Do they have any fight left in them? I will be transparent that this book wasn’t really for me, but many people don’t feel the same so I thought it should be added!
Final Girls by Riley Sager
If you know anything about Riley Sager’s books they are all based on different horror tropes, so of course there is a final girls one so aptly named Final Girls. This is another one that includes a few final girls and reads like a slasher movie! It is a quick read with a twists and unreliable characters.
Rules For Vanishing by Kate Alice Marshall
This one is quite different from the others and not a slasher type horror, but is one of my faves and is final girl-esq. A creepy horror story told through interviews, written statements and video documentation in which lead you down the wrong path continuously due to unreliable narrators. This book gave my little horror loving heart everything it ever wanted from a Young Adult Horror ! Kate Alice Marshall has developed a unique story in a wonderful, slow suspense style that you would expect from a horror film.
My Heart Is A Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones
This is another one that falls into that final girl-esq category. It is filled with slasher references due to Jade being obsessed with horror movies. You are never really sure what is going on which adds to the horror. This was not at all what I expected and takes a unique approach of looking at trauma. The ending really had me and I can’t say I have read anything like this.
So as you can see, it’s the final girls for me when it comes to horror reads!
Are you a fan of horror movies or books? Are you a fan of the final girl trope? Do you have any recommendations that would fit into this category because I would love to read more!
