Wrath of the Dragon King by Brandon Mull
Synopsis:
Cursed by the Key of Forgetting, Seth has lost all memory of his past—his relationships, his experiences, and who he really is. For now he will align with his new mentor, Ronodin, the dark unicorn, who takes him to the Phantom Isle, the secret gateway to the Under Realm. Though Seth is not formally a prisoner, Ronodin wants to use him and his shadow charmer powers for his own dark ends.
Kendra is frantic to find her missing brother, but the quest will take her and her companions, including Warren, Tanu, and Vanessa, far from Wyrmroost to Crescent Lagoon—a recently fallen dragon sanctuary made up of many islands and underwater domains. Its caretaker has regained a foothold on one of the islands. If Kendra and her friends can save that sanctuary, they might uncover the answers they need to rescue Seth.
With each sanctuary the dragons overthrow, Celebrant, the Dragon King, comes closer to the dawn of a new Age of Dragons. With the forces of darkness on the march, can Kendra and her allies gather enough power to win the epic dragon war?

Mull has really outdone himself and I cannot believe it took me so long to pick up his books. After binge reading/flying through the Fablehaven Series the Dragonwatch series was a perfect continuation series!
With the cliff hanger that Mull left us with in the end of Wrath of the Dragon King, book 2 in the Dragonwatch series, I could not wait to pick up this book. We are left with the kidnapping of Seth, who had just had his memory wiped. With the continued downfall of the Dragon Sanctuary, the others must flee after some actions caused by an unknowing Seth.
The setting of this book was so much fun and totally different than anything we have seen so far throughout the Seth and Kendra journey of Fablehaven and Dragonwatch series. The characters find themselves in a tropical setting, with new enemies, unsolved mysteries and new mythical creatures.
“Most of the world craves power over others. One tyrant falls and ten clamor to replace him. Of her. Human, dragons, demons, giants- you name the person of the creature, they are almost always working to control someone else. I fight against that trend.”
Mull does what he does backs and gives us an action packed storyline, with the characters putting themselves in the face of danger in order to save themselves and the world from the horrible evil creatures that are trying to break free. Again and again we find the characters caught in danger, having to be creative and clever to get themselves out of trouble. Throughout the whole book you are never sure who will come out victorious.
I enjoyed going on the journey with Seth, on rediscovering who he is and dealing with the fact that he has darkness inside him. This is the first time we really had to see Seth get out of a sticky situation without the help of others and proving that is more than other believe him to be. We see a lot of growth from both Seth and Kendra, having to solve the problem without each other. We also get to see some characters that we havent seen in awhile (Warren & Vanessa! ) And of course being on a tropical island you can only begin to imagine that fun mythical creatures we get to see, both fight against and with our heroes!
“They are so afraid to stop existing that they cling to a nightmare.”
Overall, this adventure did not disappoint. Mull sure knows how to write on the edge of your seat action, with tons of twists and surprises that had me flying through this almost 500 page book. And I was left needing more. Mull writes fantastic endings that wrap up the section of the story line and problems that needed solved, while leading to another mission and new directions for the heroes to go. He foreshadows and sprinkles hints throughout the story what will be the next adventure and dangers the characters might face. These books are fast and engaging fun reads that are great for all ages!
