Synopsis:
Messenger is the masterful third novel in the Giver Quartet, which began with the dystopian bestseller The Giver, now a major motion picture.
Matty has lived in Village and flourished under the guidance of Seer, a blind man known for his special sight. Village once welcomed newcomers, but something sinister has seeped into Village and the people have voted to close it to outsiders. Matty has been invaluable as a messenger. Now he must risk everything to make one last journey through the treacherous forest with his only weapon, a power he unexpectedly discovers within himself.
I have to say I was really happy to see this book start to pull together the stories and expand on the stories of Jonah, Matty and Kira. Matty was my favorite character from Gathering Blue and I was ecstatic to see he got his own story!
Although like the others this is a short book it really developed Matty’s character and had some unique paranormal aspects. This was a lot more emotional than I was anticipating. Matty is working toward receiving his true name, which he is hoping to be Messenger. He is the only one who knows how to navigate the woods and with the woods starting to close off their town he has to go to get Kira before she can no longer return. Like the other two books this has a unique and interesting society, with elements and situations that make you think and wonder what you would do.
I absolutely loved Matty as a character. He shows strength and courage as well as being a funny and intriguing character. He is so compassionate and the ending broke my heart. It was great to see the other characters from Lowry’s other books in this companion series and it all makes sense know how they all connect!
