About RESPECT:

Once upon a time, there was a beautiful princess who called a corrupt kingdom home sweet home.

Protected and sheltered from the worst the world had to offer, she fell in love with the crumbling city that burned and blazed around her. Every dirty corner, every scary shadow, found a place within her heart. So did a man who was violent and dangerous, just like the streets she claimed as her own.

He was all business and brutality, except when it came to her. With her, he was calm, caring, and heartbreakingly patient.

He warned her over and over that he wasn’t the man for her, but she refused to listen. She never expected either the streets or their enforcer to hurt her, since she’d given her heart so completely to both.

She should have known the streets in the Point were always going to be savage, and so was the man committed to keeping control of them in the hands of criminals and bloody kingpins.

Blindsided by a betrayal which cut so deeply she was sure the wounds would never heal, the princess fled the home she loved and the man who broke her heart. Throwing away her rusted, twisted crown was supposed to help her forget. All it did was make her long for everything she left behind. She told herself she would never go back, but in this tormented kingdom, family is everything. Eventually, she has no choice but to return.

While she was gone, the people who loved her worked hard to make the city safe, and the man who destroyed her sank deeper into the darkness. Going back shouldn’t feel like surrender… but it does. As this pretty princess hovers on the edge of the unknown, the past attacks with a vengeance. It’s a good reminder that puppy love eventually grows up and turns into something with sharp teeth and one hell of a bite.

She never asked for the keys to the kingdom. She’d much rather go out and build her own.

EXCERPT:

~Karsen~

I had no plans to leave the Point. It was ugly, mean, hard, and unforgiving, but these streets were home and I couldn’t imagine being happy anywhere else. This place had long since made my hands and the edges of my soul dirty. It was something I would be hard-pressed to hide should I go anywhere else. I’d have to spend my days trying to camouflage the filth I was so familiar with. Here, no one looked twice at the pretty teenager with shadows in her eyes and blood on her hands. I was one of many.

I wasn’t interested in leaving behind my sister or her fiancé, Race. We were an odd, dysfunctional family, but we made it work.

I didn’t want to be too far away from my mother, who was living in a group home as she slowly, painfully tried to recover from her alcoholism and PTSD from an accident she caused that ended up taking the life of a young mother and her child.

But more than anything, I absolutely didn’t want to leave him.

I couldn’t imagine a day going by without catching a glimpse of Noah Booker. I mean, he was impossible to miss. Six-and-a-half-feet tall, body built like a professional athlete, dark and brooding with the prettiest gunmetal-gray eyes, he was the entirety of every one of my teenage fantasies. I barely noticed the jagged scar dividing one side of his face. White and raised, it cut one of his black eyebrows in half, slashed over a high cheekbone, and ended somewhere under the chiseled edge of his hard jaw. He never talked about it, but Race, Booker’s boss, let it slip that Booker got the scar when he was locked up. Or maybe it wasn’t as much of a slip-up as a thinly veiled warning. Race never kept it much of a secret that my infatuation with his massive, dangerous, ex-con enforcer made him extremely uncomfortable. He’d warned me over and over again that Booker wasn’t for me. And he’d made it clear to the man who broke knees and smashed heads for a living that he was to stay as far away from me as possible.

They called it puppy love. It wasn’t.

To me, it was a vicious kind of love, filled with teeth and claws that I could feel digging at my insides every single time someone patted me on the head and told me how young I was, how much life I had yet to live. This love was rabid, and I was tired of having it on a leash. I wanted to let it free, wanted to let it sink its razor-sharp fangs into the man who had awoken the primal need inside of me. It was only fair he felt the same kind of crushing bite and painful pressure around his heart that I did every single day.

I was solely focused on getting to Booker. It barely registered I was done with high school and had new doors opening all around me. I couldn’t care less about getting my hands on my diploma. A piece of paper with Karsen Carter written on it in pretty calligraphy meant exactly nothing to me. The only thing I was focused on was the fact I was finally old enough to make my own choices. And I’d always picked Booker. Over and over again he was my number one priority.

Excerpt:

Two days later Arram stood at one of the many docks in Thak’s Gate, watching his father and grandfather board the small shipping vessel that would take them across the Inland Sea to Tyra. He barely remembered the place: Carthak was his home now. He never said so, of course. His family would be hurt. But the truth was, they hardly seemed like family. The things they liked to talk or write to him about held little interest: shipping, cloth, cloth markets. The only thing about their way of life that fascinated Arram was the magic that could be worked with weaving and thread. His family scorned it—there was no status in such spells. Thread magic was the work of hedgewitches and goodywives, not worth their attention. If Arram became a mage, then all the money they’d put into his education would be worth something, but only in terms of battle or healing magic. Those would bring the family status and fortune.

Arram sighed. They loved him. He knew that, from the gifts they sent—sweets, warm blankets and coats, coin for shoes—and their letters. He loved them, for their kindness, their letters, and their visits. But he didn’t understand them, or they him. The games were just the most recent example.

He saw them waving and waved back. The ship was easing back from the dock as sailors rushed up the masts and around the deck. A crowd gathered around Arram, waving and shouting to those who were sailing away.

Someone shoved him. Arram scowled at her, but she didn’t even look down. He was insignificant. His temper roiled inside him. He was always too small, too young, always being put aside. His mood was strange today, prickly and restless. He was itchy inside his skin.

“Safe journey!” people shouted, and “Swift journey!”

The thought sprouted up like it had been waiting. There was a way he could do something significant. They wouldn’t know it, but he would. It wasn’t much, but he’d feel better for it. He looked hurriedly at the inside of the hem of his tunic, searching for a loose thread. Only a couple of months ago, he had begun reading about weather magic. He had memorized a few spells from it to try when he had some time alone, out in the fields beyond the university, but surely this spell was safe enough. It was for hedgewitches, after all, a blessing for ships and voyages. It was a small thing.

He found a loose thread and tugged it free. It was red, even better! Red was for luck, hope, and strength. Holding it down in front of his belly so the people around him wouldn’t see, he wove the two scarlet ends of the thread in and out of one another, murmuring the words of the old spell. His fingers and the back of his neck were tingling. Small breezes played with his heavy black curls. Sweat trickled down his temples as he finished with the traditional blessing for his relatives and the ship. The breeze tugged at the thread. The nervous energy that had plagued his insides all morning surged and tore the thread from his fingers. He could swear it was strange, strong power from inside him that did it, and not the gusting air. Whichever it was, his spell-thread yanked from his fingers to fly high over the harbor.

Right in front of everyone, the vessel that bore Arram’s father and grandfather leaped into the air like an exuberant zebra, dropped lightly into the water, and zipped between the two lighthouses that guarded the opening to the Inland Sea.

For a moment there was only the slap of waves on the pilings. Then, nearby, someone who sounded very official yelled, “Who cast that spell? I want him caught and held for breaking harbor law! Find him right now!”

Correctly guessing that no one would be looking for a ten-year-old boy, or even an eleven-year-old one, Arram squirmed his way out of the crowd. Once clear, Arram trotted to the spot where a cart regularly waited to take passengers along the eastern side of the city wall, paid his fare, and took a seat. He had a great deal to think about.

About Tamora:

Tamora Pierce is a bestselling author of young adult fantasy books that break past the traditions of the fantasy genre to feature teenage girls as knights, wizards, and above all: heroes. A #1 New York Times bestseller and the recipient of the 2013 Margaret A. Edwards award, Tamora has written over 30 books, including the upcoming TORTALL: A SPY’S GUIDE (Oct. 31, 2017) and TEMPESTS AND SLAUGHTER (Feb. 6, 2018).

Tamora was drawn to books from a young age. Raised in rural Pennsylvania, the child of a “long, proud line of hillbillies,” her family never had much. “We were poor, but I didn’t know it then. We had a garden where my folks grew fruit and vegetables and our water came from a well,” she explains. But one thing they did have was plenty of books. So Tamora read.

A self-proclaimed “geek,” she devoured fantasy and science fiction novels, and by the age of 12 was mimicking her literary idols and writing her own action-packed stories. It was thanks to her father that Tamora began writing. “He heard me telling myself stories as I did dishes, and he suggested that I try to write some of them down,” Pierce says.

But Tamora’s novels had one major difference: unlike the books she was reading, her stories featured teenaged girl warriors. “I couldn’t understand this lapse of attention on the part of the writers I loved, so until I could talk them into correcting this small problem, I wrote about those girls, the fearless, bold, athletic creatures that I was not, but wanted so badly to be.”

Seventeen years later, after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, a brief career in teen social work and some time spent writing for radio, Tamora Pierce held true to her childhood crusade, and published ALANNA: THE FIST ADVENTURE, the first in a quartet about a valiant, young, female warrior. Pierce’s heroine struck a chord with readers across the country and quickly earned her a loyal following.

Now, with over 30 critically-acclaimed books to her name, Pierce lives in upstate New York with her husband Tim and their menagerie of nine cats, two birds, a flock of pigeons, various raccoons and squirrels, and one opossum. “It’s a pretty good life, if I do say so myself. Struggling along as a kid and even through my twenties, it’s the kind of life I dreamed of but never believed I would get. Yet here I am, after a lot of work, a lot of worry, a lot of care for details, and a massive chunk of luck, the kind that brought me such strong friends and readers. Pretty good for a hillbilly, yes? And I never take it for granted.”

Bring Me Their Hearts by Sara Wolf | Cover Reveal

In a new series Publishers Weekly has listed as “one of the most anticipated YA’s of 2018”, we’re excited to share the cover for Bring Me Their Hearts! NYT bestselling author Sara Wolf delivers a fast-paced, gritty fantasy sure to thrill fans of Holly Black, Sabba Tahir, and Sarah J. Maas.

About the book:

Zera is a Heartless—the immortal, unaging soldier of a witch. Bound to the witch Nightsinger ever since she saved her from the bandits who murdered her family, Zera longs for freedom from the woods they hide in. With her heart in a jar under Nightsinger’s control, she serves the witch unquestioningly.

Until Nightsinger asks Zera for a prince’s heart in exchange for her own, with one addendum: if she’s discovered infiltrating the court, Nightsinger will destroy Zera’s heart rather than see her tortured by the witch-hating nobles.

Crown Prince Lucien d’Malvane hates the royal court as much as it loves him—every tutor too afraid to correct him and every girl jockeying for a place at his darkly handsome side. No one can challenge him—until the arrival of Lady Zera. She’s inelegant, smart-mouthed, carefree, and out for his blood. The prince’s honor has him quickly aiming for her throat.

So begins a game of cat and mouse between a girl with nothing to lose and a boy who has it all.

Winner takes the loser’s heart.

Literally.

A DARK LEGACY where only the strong
survive and those who are Goddess touched can complete the warriors who fight
to protect the world from the creatures that go bump in the night.
DARK EMBRACE
Jennaveve, the Fey chosen by the Goddess
to be the queen of her people for the past few millennium, is tired and wishes
for a break, but hadn’t counted on being reduced to almost mortal thanks to a
dark stranger. They say you should be careful what you wish for. The last time
she’d taken a break, her Fey had left their realm, resulting in shifters on
Earth known as the Mystic and Iron Wolves and even more she was still searching
for.
Damien and Lucas Cordell knew they’d
share a Hearts Love when the time came. As the twin sons of the Vampire King
who’d mated a shifter, they were the first of their kind. When they’d thought
their mate was finally within their reach and was a shifter like their mother
only to realize she wasn’t theirs, they’d almost lost their lives to the alpha
of the Iron Wolves, Kellen Styles. Instead, the error led them to the being
that was…the Fey Queen Jennaveve. Only she was even more elusive than the wind.
Time and patience was something Damien
and Lucas had in spades, until the female they’d already laid claim to, even if
she hadn’t accepted them yet, was taken by an enemy. Saving Jenna became their
one and only focus. As time and realms slip between them, their fear for her
had them forgetting about patience and made claiming Jenna as their Hearts
Love, hoping she accepted their Dark Embrace.
Will the Cordell Twins be able to rescue
Jenna from the evil who has taken her? Will Jenna get her powers back? Who is
the dark presence and how will they defeat a being who is strong enough to
bring the Fey Queen down to her knees?

They both turned as one toward the door as a commotion
swirled into the room.
“What have you done?” Raina asked.
Lucas looked at the tall man who followed behind their
sister, waiting to see what Creed, the son of Satan, had to say. Hellboy
himself would be a good one to have on their side. “Shit, how’d you get in?” he
asked as realization dawned.
Damien flashed to his sister. “Where did you come from?” He
held her by the arms, giving her a little shake.
A deep rumble came from Creed. “Boy, I suggest you unhand my
Eros, or I’ll remove your arms from your body.”
Lucas came to stand next to his brother. “Our Hearts Love is
missing along with our father. We’ve been locked into this fucking castle and
you two just strolled in like it’s nothing. We just want to know if you can get
us out.” The last was yelled at a decibel that bordered on a roar, but Lucas
was at the zero fucks giving point.
“You got two seconds before I start dismembering your
brother. Tell him to get his fingers, palms, and any other body part off my
Raina if he wants to keep them.” Creed’s voice had become the deep tone of his
demon side.
“Damien, you might want to take a step back before we have to
rumble with our brother-in-law in front of baby sis here. Raina, please answer
the damn question while our brother is letting you go. Now, Damien, release
her.” He put as much order behind the last part, hoping to reach his twin, but
he’d never seen his twin’s eyes turn such a dark obsidian like their father’s.
Raina wrapped her arms around their brother, stilling Creed
from going killer beast. “Damien, calm down. We popped in like we always do. I
felt mama’s distress and told Creed I needed to visit. He of course insisted he
come with. When we got here I couldn’t find her, so I followed you two morons’
scents. There’s another, not quite the same, but familiar smell here too.” Her
voice shook, the slight tremor more an indication of her rising worry. She released
Damien and went to the same corner. “It’s like dad but toned down.”
“Can you track him?” Damien asked.
“No,” Creed growled.
“He took Jennaveve and our father went after him, alone.
He’s our…brother,” Damien said in a barely there whisper.
Raina spun to face them, her hand going to her throat.
“What?”
Creed flashed to her side. “She will not be your sniffing
dog.”
“Our father has another son. Goddess, its messed up to even
say that. He’s the one who hurt Jenna. He nearly killed her the last time he had
his hands on her. Somehow that…bastard traced her back here and took her out
from under our noses. Now, our father is tracking them alone while we stand
here arguing. We can’t breach these walls, but you two can. You can sense him,
Raina. Please.” Lucas held his hand out, holding the pillow with Jenna’s scent
still on it.
“That’s why mother is hurting.” She moved forward, a tear
slipping down her cheek. “Creed, I can’t stand here and do nothing when my
family is falling apart.”
“Damn it, I knew this family stuff was going to be a pain in
my ass.” Creed jerked the fabric out of Lucas’s hand. “It’s the Fey Queen. I
can scent her as well. We go together, all of us on one condition.”
Lucas and Damian nodded, waiting.
“I’m in charge and Raina is not to be harmed.”
“Hellboy, you can call all the shots as long as we find our
Love.” There was nothing he wouldn’t
agree to in order to find Jenna.
“I’m so going to regret this.” Creed dropped his chin to his
chest.
Raina turned to face Creed.
Damien pointed at the two. “No making out with our sister in
front of us. Save it for the bedroom. Let’s go people, times a wasting.” He
changed into all black clothing, and although his words were teasing, the
hardness behind the tone was anything but.
“Can I eat them?” Creed asked.
Raina shook her head. “You promised to be nice to my
family.”
“Can I let Liv eat them?”
Their sister snorted. “No, you told her she couldn’t do that
either. Come on, boys. Let’s get this party started.”
Lucas focused on Jenna’s sweet smile and promised himself
they’d have her tucked between them soon. When he opened his eyes, his brother
was staring with that same single minded intent on his face. “We’ll get her
back and make sure she can’t escape without one of us always knowing where
she’s at.”
Raina snorted. “You two will learn, a woman like Jenna won’t
take to being caged or coddled.”
He met Creed’s dark stare. “How’s that working for you,
Hellboy?”
Creed lifted his middle finger. “You still wanting a way out
of here, or we gonna sling insults back and forth? Believe me, your little
nickname is nothing compared to the things I’ve been through and trust me, boy,
I’ve definitely had much bigger beings say much nastier things than that to
me.”
Instant regret punched him in the gut. “Damn it, I’m sorry
man. You’re right. Hellboy isn’t meant to be a…bad thing. Shit! I like you and
I think you’re great for our sister.”
His sister’s mate tilted his head and nodded. “Good enough.
Let’s go. One big circle like…well, one big happy family.”
Damien groaned. “Son of a bitch, not you, too.”
Their sister clapped like she was proud to be part of the
crazy, wrapping one arm around Creed and held the other out. He moved forward,
slipping his hand in hers, waiting for Damien to grab onto his other one.
Once they formed a circle, Creed’s lips formed a straight
line. “Here we go boys and my girl.”
Darkness came quickly. The opulent bedroom replaced by a
forest that had gone eerily quiet. Creed moved next to Raina, waving his hand
around her, changing the sexy dress she’d had on into all black, making her
resemble a character from the movie Underworld. He didn’t have time to question
the man as they all seemed to notice the unnatural quietness.
“Anyone know exactly where we are?” Damien’s voice echoed
around them.
Creed closed his eyes, then opened them quickly. “We’re
still on Earth. Something is unnatural here, but it’s not demon born.”

honor-cover

Don’t be fooled.

Don’t make excuses for me.

I am not a good man.

I’ve seen things no one should, done things no one should talk about. Honor and conscience have no place in my life. But I’ve fought and I’ve survived. I’ve had to.

The first time I saw her dancing on that seedy stage in that second rate club, I felt my heart pulse for the first time. Keelyn Foster was too young, too vibrant for this place, and I knew in an instant that I would make her mine. But first I had to climb my way to the top. I had to have something more to offer her.

I’m here now, money is no object and I have no equal. Except for her. She’s disappeared. But don’t worry, I will find her and claim her. She will be mine.

Like I said, don’t be fooled. I am not the devil in disguise… I’m the one standing front and center.

EXCERPT

KEELYN

Maybe if I hadn’t spent the last six months slinging pancakes and greasy hash to hungover hipsters and avoiding the too-curious eyes of the cops who like to hit up the diner for early-morning breakfast, I would have noticed the ominous shift in the air.

Before I came to Denver six months ago, my senses had been honed to pick up on the slightest threat. Before, anything that might be dangerous, that might put me in peril, had made my skin tingle, made everything inside of me vibrate with awareness. Now I had settled into a simple, dreary rhythm. Every day was the same as the one before it and there was no outside threat constantly hounding me, hunting me, haunting me. I let my guard down. I had gone soft, and as a result the biggest danger of them all managed to slip into my new normal without giving any kind of hint he was there.

My nonslip shoe—that were probably the ugliest things ever made but absolutely necessary considering the greasy food the tiny kitchen pumped out—squeaked on the laminate floor as I made my way over to the lone patron who had taken the last available seat in my section. The massive plastic menu completely covered his face, but the Rolex on his wrist and the perfect cut of his suit jacket let me know he wasn’t my typical kind of customer. There wasn’t a flannel shirt or police blues in sight, and as I got closer, a whiff of something exotic and familiar engulfed my senses and stopped me in my tracks. Of all the things I had left behind, he was the one I had tried hardest to forget.

The tingling across my skin spread. My tummy tightened. Blood rushed loudly between my ears. My shaking fingers curled around the pen in my hand like a weapon. Before I could pull it together and walk away, the menu lowered and I was pinned to the spot, immobilized by eyes the color of spice rum.

They were wicked eyes. Eyes that saw far too much and gave nothing away. Eyes I daydreamed about. Eyes that caused me to wake up in a cold sweat. Eyes that turned me inside out and shook me up as they made a slow perusal from the top of my head to the tips of my god-awful shoes, returning to my face and staying there as I struggled to keep my shit together.

He slowly put the menu down on the cracked tabletop and leaned back in the booth. He was strikingly out of place here and I absolutely hated how that sexy twist of his mouth, a mouth that I dreamed about almost every night, made my traitorous heart flutter and my pulse kick.

I was also strikingly out of place here, but I’d learned to fake it. He, obviously, never bothered to fake anything. He wasn’t a man with virtuous intentions and he never pretended to be.

Gone were the mile-high stilettos that I always wore. In their place I now donned work shoes that prevented me from falling on my ass as I ran food and dirty dishes to and from the kitchen. I was hiding in plain sight, knowing that the last place on earth anyone who might come looking for me would check out would be this greasy spoon. This was the opposite of me and the life I had always lived, so even though I could afford better, craved more, this was where I needed to be…until he showed up.

excerpt

The Sellite escorted her out of the cabin. They were standing at a sort of terminus, in the middle of a lake of black liquid. It stretched out in all directions, and Diva saw that the terminus was build out into the lake, for the shore was a relatively long way away in any direction.

She was led up a “jetty” which was suspended over the black liquid by big rexelene tanks. Set into the jetty at intervals were other, smaller boardwalks each of which terminated in a metallic ring sitting right on the surface of the liquid. The Sellite went over to a control panel and pulled a switch to start some sort of life-support mechanism. Then he ushered her down the fifth boardwalk to the left, indicated the ring, and said, “Jump!”

“Jump?” She shook her head. “Into that? I don’t think so.”

For as far as she could see there was only a murky liquid, which closer up appeared to be more a type of gel. Almost solid. It would have been an ocean if only it hadn’t been so thick. And he was telling her to sink into this stuff! He had to have been lying to her about keeping them all alive. This was some sort of macabre experiment. “I … I won’t!”

“Jump!” The earlier order was repeated, the man again indicating the loop of metal which lay on the surface of the substance. “Take a deep breath and jump!”

“Will not.” Diva sat down as firmly as she could on the jetty and grabbed one of the slats it was made of with all her might. “Will. Not.”

But he plucked her up off the jetty with no very great effort and suspended her over the loop of metal.

“Take a deep breath!” And when she didn’t, couldn’t, he gave her a little shake. “Do it, I tell you. Nothing bad is going to happen to you!”

She refused, kicking out with her legs and sobbing. “I won’t let you!”

It made no difference. He simply waited, holding the kicking and squirming girl coolly until she was forced to take in a gulp of air. Then, with one slick movement he dropped her into the asphyxiating goo.

She sank through it like a stone. To try and keep her panic at bay, she began to count the time as she fell. She had been able to hold her breath for fifty seconds at home, but here … she probably wouldn’t survive more than thirty. Already her lungs felt full to bursting.

She reached thirty-two and began to scream silently inside her head. She wouldn’t last much longer. Her body was desperate for air, her heart beating a frantic tom-tom of flutters. I can’t hold my breath any more, she thought sadly. Damn! I should have done better. Dizziness entered her head and left her light with acceptance. I mustn’t breathe, mustn’t breathe, mustn’t breathe, mus—

A sudden acceleration told her that she had exited the gel. She fell freely for a second and then hit a soft, rather rubbery floor that gave with her weight and then settled gently back into place. She lay panting, taking in air in huge rasping gasps. Her heart took its time in deciding it was still alive, finally settling down into some semblance of normality. All it cared about was if the air was breathable. It must be so, because her heart was calming down slowly.

Diva stared at her surroundings. She was in a room, enveloped in the dark substance. It looked a different colour now, more translucent. It was, just as the Sellite had said, a bubble. She felt behind her with her hands, pressing into the wall. It ceded slightly, and then seemed to press back. There were several tubes visible on one side, and a smaller bubble in an alcove off the main one. She made her way over to the doorway, which she noticed was not regular. Instead it was just like the joins of linked soap bubbles, an irregular and slightly curved quadrilateral. She peered inside. There was a bed, made of the same material. What had he called it? Orthogel? And there were toilet facilities to the right. The bigger bubble must have been about ten metres in diameter, the smaller one about five.

Air, she was relieved to see, was being pumped in through one of the tubes, and out through another. But there was no way out. The ceiling that she had fallen through had closed behind her, and now presented a perfectly smooth aspect. In any case, gravity would ensure that she couldn’t get out the way she came in.

Gillian Andrews

I am English, although I live in Spain now. I’ve worked at all sorts of things, but have been writing too, on and off, since I was little. I have always been passionate about cosmology and astrophysics, so it was exciting to be able to bring that aspect into the series. I recently finished a masters in astronomy and astrophysics.

Valhai is the book I always wanted to write, but I got so involved with the characters myself that I simply had to go on writing about them, which turned a one-off novel into a series. I hope readers will identify with them and enjoy them too. I myself have been practically living in The Ammonite Galaxy for the last five years. It has become so real to me that I can almost touch it!

The books out so far in the series are:

Book One: Valhai
Book Two: Kwaide
Book Three: Xiantha
Book Four: Pictoria
Book Five: The Lost Animas
Book Six: The Namura Stone (published September2014)

Book Seven: The Trimorphs (to be published 2015)

Ammonite Planets is the omnibus edition of Books #1-3 and is exclusive to the Kindle store, and Ammonite Stars is the omnibus edition of Books #4-5, also exclusive to the Kindle store.

Series: Hawkers Drift

Synopsis:
Small Town, Dark Heart…

A long way from anywhere, on a road going nowhere, lays a small, unremarkable town. It seems a peaceable, prosperous little place, on the surface at least. Away from prying eyes however, in the shadows and the forgotten corners, there is a web being weaved through the lives of its inhabitants by the town’s urbane and mysterious Mayor. A man prepared to make a deal for your heart’s desire and, maybe, for your very soul…

Welcome to Hawker’s Drift, a town where nothing is quite as it seems…[Goodreads]

excerpt

Only three people trudged behind the coffin-laden wagon.

He assumed the woman in the black dress was the widow. Her face was veiled, but her back was straight and she moved as freely as the cloying mud allowed; a young widow. A small bookish man peering through rain-smeared spectacles laboured next to her, struggling to hold an umbrella over them both in the wind. Behind came a cadaverous looking old bird clutching a dog-eared bible to his chest. A preacher.

Amos pulled his horse to the side of the road; if that wasn’t too generous a description for two mud-choked ruts. It meandered towards a town that occupied a low slung hill; the only feature on the vast tableland of grass. He took off his hat and let the rain sting his face as the little procession passed. The widow glanced up at him hesitantly, before nodding an acknowledgement. From behind the shadows of her veil he got the impression of an attractive woman with no intention of crying. There was sadness, not unexpectedly, coming off of her, but interspersed with those dull grey waves came prickly spikes of fear too.

The preacher flicked a glance in his direction as well, but he quickly dropped his eyes and scurried along, his body bent forward against the driving rain. He looked terribly unhappy with his lot. The preacher was suffering, a physical pain beneath a terrible craving.

The third man, his jacket flapping in the breeze, ignored him, and Amos tried to do the same to the hot, fetid desire that was rolling off of him like a burning fever.

Whoever was being buried had not warranted much in the way of gestures from the rest of the town. What did you have to do to end up with only two mourners and a sour-faced preacher at your funeral?

As the wagon bearing the coffin rattled on towards the cemetery, signified by a small forest of crosses poking above the surrounding long grass, he let the rain wash the scent of their souls from the air before he replaced his hat and pushed his weary horse on towards the town.

Out here, where seas of grass washed towards too far away horizons and the earth squatted beneath colossal skies, it amounted to civilization.

He slipped his coat back and made sure his gun was free to draw.

Civilization, he had found, tended to suck.

Things are about to get Wicked in New Orleans.

Twenty-two year old Ivy Morgan isn’t your average college student. She, and others like her, know humans aren’t the only thing trolling the French Quarter for fun… and for food. Her duty to the Order is her life. After all, four years ago, she lost everything at the hands of the creatures she’d sworn to hunt, tearing her world and her heart apart.

Ren Owens is the last person Ivy expected to enter her rigidly controlled life. He’s six feet and three inches of temptation and swoon-inducing charm. With forest-green eyes and a smile that’s surely left a stream of broken hearts in its wake, he has an uncanny, almost unnatural ability to make her yearn for everything he has to offer. But letting him in is as dangerous as hunting the cold-blooded killers stalking the streets. Losing the boy she loved once before had nearly destroyed her, but the sparking tension that grows between them becomes impossible for Ivy to deny. Deep down, she wants… she needs more than what her duty demands of her, what her past has shaped for her.

But as Ivy grows closer to Ren, she realizes she’s not the only one carrying secrets that could shatter the frail bond between them. There’s something he’s not telling her, and one thing is for certain. She’s no longer sure what is more dangerous to her—the ancient beings threatening to take over the town or the man demanding to lay claim to her heart and her soul.

Hexed_cover_7_30_13If high school is all about social status, Indigo Blackwood has it made. Sure, her quirky mom owns an occult shop, and a nerd just won’t stop trying to be her friend, but Indie is a popular cheerleader with a football-star boyfriend and a social circle powerful enough to ruin everyone at school. Who wouldn’t want to be her?

Then a guy dies right before her eyes. And the dusty old family Bible her mom is freakishly possessive of is stolen. But it’s when a frustratingly sexy stranger named Bishop enters Indie’s world that she learns her destiny involves a lot more than pom-poms and parties. If she doesn’t get the Bible back, every witch on the planet will die. And that’s seriously bad news for Indie, because according to Bishop, she’s a witch too.

Suddenly forced into a centuries-old war between witches and sorcerers, Indie’s about to uncover the many dark truths about her life—and a future unlike any she ever imagined on top of the cheer pyramid.

TOP TEN THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT HEXED

♠  It’s about witches. But it’s also about friendship and the sometimes-tenuous bonds of friendship and growing up. While magic is an important part of the book, so is high school and all of the drama that goes along with that.

♠ Indigo isn’t perfect. She has flaws and lots of personal growth to do, and I freaking love that about her.

♠There are two warring factions in the book: Witches and warlocks, headed up by the Family, and sorcerers, headed up by the Priory. And none of them are entirely the “good guys”.

♠ It’s campy. There’s a lot of snarky humor and the magic is over-the-top, so if you’re expecting dark, broody characters slowly boiling herbs over a cauldron, you’ll probably be disappointed.

♠ People are going to die. (And they won’t magically come back to life after they die, either.)

♠ Bishop isn’t your usual love interest. While he is tall, dark and handsome, he’s also funny, irreverent, and he doesn’t care what people think of him.

♠ There’s kissing. And lots of it. So, you know, stay away if you’re not into that sort of thing, ya weirdo.

♠ There’s a cliffhanger at the end. I know, I know. The dreaded cliffhanger. BUT! Almost all of the story elements introduced in Hexed are wrapped up in the book—it’s only when you read the last couple of pages that you realize the little something that you might not have paid that much attention to is actually a bigger issue than you thought.

♠ It’s a duology. The sequel, CHARMED, comes out May 26th, 2015.

♠ You’ll like it! I think. (I hope.)

Holy Epic Fantasy! This book was such an amazing awesome surprise! The beginning takes awhile to get into and so I was really nervous, but this book blew me out of the water. It picks up and I couldn’t put it down. It contained so much world building and complex characters that kept pushing the story forward and not once did I feel like it was too much or boring.   I feel like I should include a warning that this review might not make sense because I tend to ramble and get all confusing when I absolutely love a book!

The Seventh Friend is a epic fantasy novel that follows the story of multiple players in the upcoming events in the land of Terras.  The looming threats of war  mimic the  events of 400 years before when Terras was invaded by the Seth Yarra. The 6 kingdoms must face their differences to join together and defeat the enemy. With the help from the Benetheon ( The Gods) ,the kingdoms face a great struggle.

While weaving together multiple different character arcs, Stead develops some fantastic characters that are dynamic and face so much internal struggle and personal growth. The characters are kickass, strong and full of personality and their own quirks. Although there were a few characters I dislike, you are made to feel that way about them and learn to grow on them as they evolve and change throughout the story. While the story continually switches from each main player in the events it also includes some secondary characters which was refreshing and also enjoyable. You really got to learn about the world from every angle and perspective.

Tim Stead put so much work into developing a complex world with great detail. He really thought through everything and every move that presented itself.  The kingdoms are so diverse and each has their own way of life, customs and qualities. The world is so well crafted with all character story arcs coming together and enhancing the depth of the world. Because it is an e-book there is no map, but Stead writes in a way and presents the world building in such a way that throughout the story you are reminded of the details and fact in a subtle way so you can follow along and know whats going on and where. (Also there is a map located on the authors website that he drew up!)

This book was action packed and Stead sure knows how to write a battle scene, they were descriptive and made you really be able to picture what was going on. Throughout the battle scenes he has me hanging on the edge of my seat with suspense and anticipation. He has an eye for details and cleverly wrote an amazing fantasy novel that is unique and intriguing. The Seventh Friend is the first in a  series and I absolutely can’t wait to continue on with this series. I highly recommend this book. It has quickly moved up on my favorites of 2014 and want more people to read this so I can share my love of this underrated and undiscovered epic fantasy novel. Even though I haven’t yet read any of the work, but it has been recommended to fans of Song of Fire and Ice by George R.R. Martin and those fans of Robin Hobbs work!

RATING-3

ABOUT THE AUTHOR :

mugshot

Tim Stead was born in the UK, lived in Hong Kong, London, Hampshire, and eventually moved to New Zealand. He wasted many years not writing, but now has the time to devote to it. He has written six books, three of which are available on Amazon (The Sparrow and the Wolf trilogy). The others will follow, as will editions for Createspace and Smashwords. He writes fantasy because it is so open to the imagination, which is half the fun, and also because it permits exaggerated explorations of humanity and all its excesses.
He is a former avid scuba diver, a former beekeeper, and a very poor skier, archer and fencer.
Torn between reading and writing, but writing is winning. He now spends most of his time writing, reading, planting trees, cutting them down, cutting them up, and trying to persuade people to read his books.
