Haven by Mary Lindsey | Fancast

Haven by Mary Lindsey has a cast full of characters each with their own quirks and qualities that I thought it would fun to create a fancast. I know some of these actors are a little bit too old and some don’t exactly meet the physical descriptions of what is in the book, but they are either what came to mind for me when thinking of the characters and their personalities. I would love to see who Mary Lindsey would cast in the leading roles. Check out my review!

Have you read Haven yet? Who would you cast?

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas | Book Review

Genre: YA, Fantasy, Retelling

“I was as unburdened as a piece of dandelion fluff, and he was the wind that stirred me about the world.”
― Sarah J. Maas, A Court of Thorns and Roses

Series: A Court of Thorns and Roses

When nineteen-year-old huntress Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, a beast-like creature arrives to demand retribution for it. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she only knows about from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not an animal, but Tamlin—one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled their world.

As she dwells on his estate, her feelings for Tamlin transform from icy hostility into a fiery passion that burns through every lie and warning she’s been told about the beautiful, dangerous world of the Fae. But an ancient, wicked shadow grows over the faerie lands, and Feyre must find a way to stop it… or doom Tamlin—and his world—forever.

Goodreads | Amazon

I first have to start this by saying I cannot believe I waited so long to read something by Sarah J. Maas. The synopsis of this book intrigued me along with the fact that everyone praised Maas’s work, but I am always hesitant with retellings and especially books about fae. This book proved all my hesitation to be pointless.

While there were parallels to the original story of Beauty and the Beast, Maas wove together some fantastical twists and beautiful world building and elements that made this story brilliant. I loved what she was able to do with the incorporation of fae and the groundwork she laid for the world and the story were unique and wonderful! I thought her fusion of the old and new story were so seemingly done. There was the perfect amount of elements taken to still allow for her to make a story that could be completely her own. The way she took some of the most known parts of the original story and put such a twist on them was fantastic. Beauty loves to read and yet Feyre is illiterate. The play on the old story and the fact that without knowing it shares parallels with another story it can be completely its own and still be unique, beautiful and an engrossing story.

Shout out for strong kickass females! Feyre is a feisty, independent and wonderful female lead. She is determined to do anything she can for her family and because of this she must give up her life. I do have to say I was quite surprised with the romance in this book. I absolutely loved it don’t get me wrong, but it was borderline new adult. I just found that shocking since it is a young adult novel, but it did not bother me. I loved the males in this book and felt like they were nicely developed. And although at times there seems to be a hint at a future love triangle, it was not heavy. Tamlin is a complex and interesting character. I enjoyed that you learn about him a little at the time along with Feyre. He was strong and everything you want from a love interest. Not only were the characters and the world amazing, but the creatures that were created were so well developed and explained to a point were I began to sympathize with them. I am always a little weird about fae in books, but Maas did such an excellent job!

Overall I thought this was an amazing story. I absolutely love Maas’s writing and think she has such a fantastic and unique take on stories and world building. A Court of Thorns and Roses had just the right amount of fantastical and beautiful aspects as well as a slight dark atmosphere. Maas brought this world to life and used such beautiful imagery. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy, badass females, beautiful worlds and Maas’s writing.

The Raven Boys | Fancast

Untitled design-7

Along with the reaction post we have been doing every week for the Future Cat Ladies of America Book Club pick for the month of July, The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater, Autumn @Kitty Cat Reads and I decided to do a fancast for the book! We haven’t talked about this to each other so it will be a surprise when we post it!

I found this a little difficult because all the people I kept thinking of were older than high school age. After looking at my picks of actors/actress you will notice that they are all still older than high school age, but I feel like they look the youngest out of the choices I had in my head and than just gave up and decided I didn’t care and these would be the people I picked to star in the movie. I went mainly on looks of who I see in my head while I was reading the book over a combination of personality or such. There are slight (easily fixed) physical features that would have to change on each, but overall I think they are a good depiction of the characters I see in my head! (I will say that I still am not 100% about Adam and Gansey I keep switching them and can’t decide which actor fits best.)

If you have read the book, I would love to hear from you on your thoughts of my fan cast and who you pictured/would cast to play the parts! I had a fun time doing this and I hope you enjoyed it! Make sure you check out Autumn’s Fancast too @ Kitty Cat Reads!

DISCUSSION|  The Raven Boys [Prologue- Chapter 12]

* WARNING this post will contain spoilers and probably too much personal information about Autumn @Kitty Cat Reads and I.(Its also going to be pretty long) So if you haven’t yet read The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater I would recommend  closing your eyes/computer/tab or anything else that might ruin the book for you.*

So we are still in the beta stages of how we are going to run our Book of the Month posts and discussions, so sorry if this seems a little rambly and all over the place. The Rave Boys is the first pick for our book club: The Future Cat Ladies of America. You can find information in our first post HERE or on our goodreads group.  I am going to try and group some of the info into groupings and I will try to indicate the differences between Autumn and I’s thoughts. We felt like since this was just the beginning of the book we would focus on mainly the characters and our thoughts. There will also be a few questions we asked each other to answer, our ramblings on the new “loves of our lives” and some additional connections/thoughts and feelings about things !

Random Thoughts:

♦ Adam’s story is kind of sad and the facts that he needs the favor and such because he is a scholarship kid and doesn’t have the money that everyone else has and also comes from a not so great home.
♦Thoughts about the raven that Ronan found. Autumn believes that the little bird is  grounding Ronan. That he needs something to be there for and be of some importance for something.
♦Their beliefs in the supernatural and what Gansey is selling. Ronan seems to really believe in it and all that supernatural stuff that Gansey is obsessed with, whereas Adam is skeptical and not so sure about everything, but wants to believe because he needs the favor.

Questions We Have:

♦What is the reason for all the references to ravens?
♦We wants to know more about the relationship between Gansey and Ronan and how they came to be friends and what it is that make Gansey feel such a need to take care of Ronan.
♦Where is Gansey’s mother and what is the deal with her?
♦How are the boys living at the warehouse?
♦Why is Ronan so good at latin and so dedicated to it?

♠ Blue-
Autumn: Not impressed so far. She doesn’t feel like she can really relate to her, but does love her sassy side!
Ashley: I also feel like we haven’t seen enough of Blue to really be able to grow an attachment to her, but I love that she is quirky and doesn’t care what others think about her!

♠ Noah-
Autumn: She is a bad kitten and nows secrets about Noah that I do not because she was looking at things. She also wants to know how he came around to become involved with the other boys.
Ashley: I don’t have any real thoughts about Noah yet. I feel like he hasn’t been very present, always in the background.

♠ Whelks- We keep forgetting he is close in age to the boys and went to Aglionby too! Also think that his life and what happened is parallel to what is happening to the boys now

♠ Ashley- We agree with Adam’s theories that she is not as dumb as she puts on. We want to know why she is involved with Declan and why she’s so interested in Gansey’s research.

♠ Declan- There is something missing from his story and the reasons for his fighting with Ronan.

♠ Maura- Blue’s mother is awesome! But she is keeping secrets and things away from Blue, which makes it intriguing to see whats going on that we don’t know about yet.

Book boyfriends are one of the best things ever and really can make or break a book. Of course The Rave Boys has a variety of boys to choose from! And with many other books/movies/tv shows Autumn and I also end up choices slightly different love interest even though we have very similar taste. The Raven Boys is no different. Here is the example of our crazy obsessions and school girl crushes.

♠ Ronan (The love of Autumn’s life)
Autumn: According to her “he is right down to the exact type of what I like”.She likes the guys with the issues that get angry. Her greatest weakness is  the broken boys that like to fight.
Ashley: I think Ronan is a great character and totally swoon worthy. Who doesn’t love the bad boys that have that dark wounded side. I do think he totally needs to solve some of his life because he has all these people that care about him.

♠ Adam (Ashley’s weakness)
Autumn: All of Autumn’s thoughts on Adam were mainly questions besides the fact that she really likes him too. She wants to know how adam fell into cahoots with Gansey and how is he at school (how he got his scholarship/what drew him to Aglionby).
Ashley: I love the fact that he has “flaws” at least what he considers to be flaws. Seeing him working hard to make a better future is so endearing. Also the fact that he is a little wounded and also intelligent. Adam is so swoon worthy in my opinion!

♠ Gansey:
Autumn: Autumn wants him as her BFF. She feels like she is a lot like him, with his learning/ obsessing and would love to do all that stuff with him.
Ashley: I am kind of slightly (more like really) in love with Gansey too! He is intelligent, loves books and research. He is also a really great guy and really cares about his friends and their well being. Perfection!

I created a few questions to ask Autumn as well as answer myself and Autumn also created one.

♠With the research that Gansey is doing it is said that whoever finds and wakes the king will receive one favor.
If you were given the chance to ask for one favor what would it be?
Autumn: A fairytale happily ever after, not the specific details but a guarantee that I will be happy in life.
Ashley: This is a hard question, but I think not having to worry about money ever again. Not asking for a bunch of money or to be rich, just not having to worry about trying to find money to pay bills and such.

If you had insomnia like Gansey what would be your late night project and obsession be?
Autumn: Teaching myself things/research based things (civil war etc) reading to teach herself to do things or wandering around outside. (She referred to herself as Hermonie Granger).
Ashley: I mean I already spend so much time on my blog, but I think that would be it. Like teaching myself more coding and how to make my blog super baller!

♠Blue has been told her whole life that when she kisses her true love he will die.
If you were in blues situation how would you handle it?
Autumn:- Now I would be angry and hostile about it but when I was younger I would have kissed everyone because if it was a true love you need to be in love so wouldnt care and do whatever I want. It sucks a lot but seems like blues true love is predestined to die so it seems like it wouldnt matter if they were in love or not.
Ashley: I don’t think I would be able to handle it. It is like giving limits to your life and telling you basically you can’t do something and I am not about that life.

If you had the gift of clairvoyance, what would your medium be ?
Autumn: Tarot Cards!
Ashley: Crystal Ball, because how cool would that be!

♠ One of the lynch boys killed their father
♠ Ronan tried to kill himself and thats why he has adopted the raven (To be important and ground himself)

*I don’t really have any theories as of yet*

Please share your thoughts and add to our discussion if you would like! Just please make sure not to spoil the rest of the book for us!

Both Autumn and I are completely obsessed with the movie The Covenant (2006). We both also feel that they are similar and when we were going over our reactions and discussions we went off on a rant about this movie and who each character from the book would be in the movie vis versa. If you haven’t seen this movie yet and have read this book  you should definitely watch it.Its got the whole prep school and group of boys thing. (warning though, many people aren’t fond of this movie so it might just be some obsession that Autumn and I alone share and the trailer isn’t the best, but oh well.) Here is a trailer of the movie!

Happy July everyone!  Starting today Autumn @ Kitty Cat Reads  and I are going to be starting a fun new feature on our blogs, we’ll be hosting a book club!  Each month we’ll be choosing a new book to read together and we’ll be posting our (probably spoilery and mostly uncensored) reactions to what we’ve read in weekly round-up posts either here or over at Autumn’s blog. Along with post that will probably give away far too many details about the books as well as our personal lives, we will each post an overall review of the book (non-spoliery for the most part) at the end of the month. We would love to have all of you join in on our discussions or even read along with us too so we’ve created our own little book club group over on Goodreads, we are officially the Future Cat Ladies of America Book Club (though you need not be a lady, or American, or even a cat person to join us)! Feel free to join the group if you’d like to keep up with our discussion of the book, we’d love to hear your thoughts too. So, without further ado, here is our pick for July:

Title: The Raven Boys
Author: Maggie Stiefvater
Goodreads | Barnes & Noble | Amazon

Synopsis: It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive.

Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them—not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her.

His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble.

But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He has it all—family money, good looks, devoted friends—but he’s looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little.

For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.

Here’s the schedule for which chapters we’ll be reading each week (and covering in our reaction posts) if you plan on reading along with us:

July 1-5: Prologue – Chapter 12
July 6-12: Chapters 13-24
July 13-19: Chapters 25-36
July 20-26: Chapters 37-48

We’ll also be tweeting as we read at @KittyCatReads and @downthebookhole using the hashtag #FCLABookClub if you’d like to join us there!

If you have any questions about the goodreads group, the blog post or about life feel free to send a comment my way. Also if you would like to start reading with us every month we are taking suggestions for the book for August! And if you have already read The Raven Boys we would love for you to share thoughts and such with us so we can all Fangirl (or fanboy if thats how you roll) over parts and such (or I guess if we hate the book we can complain about it too!)

Making Up For Monday [6/9]

Today’s Question: What book would you like to suggest to a book club but never have? Why?

Well I am not a part of a book club so there isn’t a book that I have been hesitant to suggest. I read a lot of fantasy books that seem to always have some choice language, I still usually suggest those books to others, but I guess if I was in a book club I could be hesitant to suggest them. The book that I most recently read and absolutely loved with a abundant amount of fowl language was

The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch!

What are some books you are hesitant to suggest/ would never suggest to a book club?
