Arram. Varice. Ozorne. In the first book in the Numair Chronicles, three student mages are bound by fate . . . fated for trouble.

Arram Draper is a boy on the path to becoming one of the realm’s most powerful mages. The youngest student in his class at the Imperial University of Carthak, he has a Gift with unlimited potential for greatness–and for attracting danger. At his side are his two best friends: Varice, a clever girl with an often-overlooked talent, and Ozorne, the “leftover prince” with secret ambitions. Together, these three friends forge a bond that will one day shape kingdoms. And as Ozorne gets closer to the throne and Varice gets closer to Arram’s heart, Arram begins to realize that one day soon he will have to decide where his loyalties truly lie.

In the Numair Chronicles, readers will be rewarded with the never-before-told story of how Numair Salmalín came to Tortall. Newcomers will discover an unforgettable fantasy adventure where a kingdom’s future rests on the shoulders of a talented young man with a knack for making vicious enemies.

Act fast! The first printing of the hardcover includes a collector’s edition poster!

Two days later Arram stood at one of the many docks in Thak’s Gate, watching his father and grandfather board the small shipping vessel that would take them across the Inland Sea to Tyra. He barely remembered the place: Carthak was his home now. He never said so, of course. His family would be hurt. But the truth was, they hardly seemed like family. The things they liked to talk or write to him about held little interest: shipping, cloth, cloth markets. The only thing about their way of life that fascinated Arram was the magic that could be worked with weaving and thread. His family scorned it—there was no status in such spells. Thread magic was the work of hedgewitches and goodywives, not worth their attention. If Arram became a mage, then all the money they’d put into his education would be worth something, but only in terms of battle or healing magic. Those would bring the family status and fortune.

Arram sighed. They loved him. He knew that, from the gifts they sent—sweets, warm blankets and coats, coin for shoes—and their letters. He loved them, for their kindness, their letters, and their visits. But he didn’t understand them, or they him. The games were just the most recent example.

He saw them waving and waved back. The ship was easing back from the dock as sailors rushed up the masts and around the deck. A crowd gathered around Arram, waving and shouting to those who were sailing away.

Someone shoved him. Arram scowled at her, but she didn’t even look down. He was insignificant. His temper roiled inside him. He was always too small, too young, always being put aside. His mood was strange today, prickly and restless. He was itchy inside his skin.

“Safe journey!” people shouted, and “Swift journey!”

The thought sprouted up like it had been waiting. There was a way he could do something significant. They wouldn’t know it, but he would. It wasn’t much, but he’d feel better for it. He looked hurriedly at the inside of the hem of his tunic, searching for a loose thread. Only a couple of months ago, he had begun reading about weather magic. He had memorized a few spells from it to try when he had some time alone, out in the fields beyond the university, but surely this spell was safe enough. It was for hedgewitches, after all, a blessing for ships and voyages. It was a small thing.

He found a loose thread and tugged it free. It was red, even better! Red was for luck, hope, and strength. Holding it down in front of his belly so the people around him wouldn’t see, he wove the two scarlet ends of the thread in and out of one another, murmuring the words of the old spell. His fingers and the back of his neck were tingling. Small breezes played with his heavy black curls. Sweat trickled down his temples as he finished with the traditional blessing for his relatives and the ship. The breeze tugged at the thread. The nervous energy that had plagued his insides all morning surged and tore the thread from his fingers. He could swear it was strange, strong power from inside him that did it, and not the gusting air. Whichever it was, his spell-thread yanked from his fingers to fly high over the harbor.

Right in front of everyone, the vessel that bore Arram’s father and grandfather leaped into the air like an exuberant zebra, dropped lightly into the water, and zipped between the two lighthouses that guarded the opening to the Inland Sea.

For a moment there was only the slap of waves on the pilings. Then, nearby, someone who sounded very official yelled, “Who cast that spell? I want him caught and held for breaking harbor law! Find him right now!”

Correctly guessing that no one would be looking for a ten-year-old boy, or even an eleven-year-old one, Arram squirmed his way out of the crowd. Once clear, Arram trotted to the spot where a cart regularly waited to take passengers along the eastern side of the city wall, paid his fare, and took a seat. He had a great deal to think about.

About Tamora:

Tamora Pierce is a bestselling author of young adult fantasy books that break past the traditions of the fantasy genre to feature teenage girls as knights, wizards, and above all: heroes. A #1 New York Times bestseller and the recipient of the 2013 Margaret A. Edwards award, Tamora has written over 30 books, including the upcoming TORTALL: A SPY’S GUIDE (Oct. 31, 2017) and TEMPESTS AND SLAUGHTER (Feb. 6, 2018).

Tamora was drawn to books from a young age. Raised in rural Pennsylvania, the child of a “long, proud line of hillbillies,” her family never had much. “We were poor, but I didn’t know it then. We had a garden where my folks grew fruit and vegetables and our water came from a well,” she explains. But one thing they did have was plenty of books. So Tamora read.

A self-proclaimed “geek,” she devoured fantasy and science fiction novels, and by the age of 12 was mimicking her literary idols and writing her own action-packed stories. It was thanks to her father that Tamora began writing. “He heard me telling myself stories as I did dishes, and he suggested that I try to write some of them down,” Pierce says.

But Tamora’s novels had one major difference: unlike the books she was reading, her stories featured teenaged girl warriors. “I couldn’t understand this lapse of attention on the part of the writers I loved, so until I could talk them into correcting this small problem, I wrote about those girls, the fearless, bold, athletic creatures that I was not, but wanted so badly to be.”

Seventeen years later, after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, a brief career in teen social work and some time spent writing for radio, Tamora Pierce held true to her childhood crusade, and published ALANNA: THE FIST ADVENTURE, the first in a quartet about a valiant, young, female warrior. Pierce’s heroine struck a chord with readers across the country and quickly earned her a loyal following.

Now, with over 30 critically-acclaimed books to her name, Pierce lives in upstate New York with her husband Tim and their menagerie of nine cats, two birds, a flock of pigeons, various raccoons and squirrels, and one opossum. “It’s a pretty good life, if I do say so myself. Struggling along as a kid and even through my twenties, it’s the kind of life I dreamed of but never believed I would get. Yet here I am, after a lot of work, a lot of worry, a lot of care for details, and a massive chunk of luck, the kind that brought me such strong friends and readers. Pretty good for a hillbilly, yes? And I never take it for granted.”

They both turned as one toward the door as a commotion
swirled into the room.
“What have you done?” Raina asked.
Lucas looked at the tall man who followed behind their
sister, waiting to see what Creed, the son of Satan, had to say. Hellboy
himself would be a good one to have on their side. “Shit, how’d you get in?” he
asked as realization dawned.
Damien flashed to his sister. “Where did you come from?” He
held her by the arms, giving her a little shake.
A deep rumble came from Creed. “Boy, I suggest you unhand my
Eros, or I’ll remove your arms from your body.”
Lucas came to stand next to his brother. “Our Hearts Love is
missing along with our father. We’ve been locked into this fucking castle and
you two just strolled in like it’s nothing. We just want to know if you can get
us out.” The last was yelled at a decibel that bordered on a roar, but Lucas
was at the zero fucks giving point.
“You got two seconds before I start dismembering your
brother. Tell him to get his fingers, palms, and any other body part off my
Raina if he wants to keep them.” Creed’s voice had become the deep tone of his
demon side.
“Damien, you might want to take a step back before we have to
rumble with our brother-in-law in front of baby sis here. Raina, please answer
the damn question while our brother is letting you go. Now, Damien, release
her.” He put as much order behind the last part, hoping to reach his twin, but
he’d never seen his twin’s eyes turn such a dark obsidian like their father’s.
Raina wrapped her arms around their brother, stilling Creed
from going killer beast. “Damien, calm down. We popped in like we always do. I
felt mama’s distress and told Creed I needed to visit. He of course insisted he
come with. When we got here I couldn’t find her, so I followed you two morons’
scents. There’s another, not quite the same, but familiar smell here too.” Her
voice shook, the slight tremor more an indication of her rising worry. She released
Damien and went to the same corner. “It’s like dad but toned down.”
“Can you track him?” Damien asked.
“No,” Creed growled.
“He took Jennaveve and our father went after him, alone.
He’s our…brother,” Damien said in a barely there whisper.
Raina spun to face them, her hand going to her throat.
Creed flashed to her side. “She will not be your sniffing
“Our father has another son. Goddess, its messed up to even
say that. He’s the one who hurt Jenna. He nearly killed her the last time he had
his hands on her. Somehow that…bastard traced her back here and took her out
from under our noses. Now, our father is tracking them alone while we stand
here arguing. We can’t breach these walls, but you two can. You can sense him,
Raina. Please.” Lucas held his hand out, holding the pillow with Jenna’s scent
still on it.
“That’s why mother is hurting.” She moved forward, a tear
slipping down her cheek. “Creed, I can’t stand here and do nothing when my
family is falling apart.”
“Damn it, I knew this family stuff was going to be a pain in
my ass.” Creed jerked the fabric out of Lucas’s hand. “It’s the Fey Queen. I
can scent her as well. We go together, all of us on one condition.”
Lucas and Damian nodded, waiting.
“I’m in charge and Raina is not to be harmed.”
“Hellboy, you can call all the shots as long as we find our
Love.” There was nothing he wouldn’t
agree to in order to find Jenna.
“I’m so going to regret this.” Creed dropped his chin to his
Raina turned to face Creed.
Damien pointed at the two. “No making out with our sister in
front of us. Save it for the bedroom. Let’s go people, times a wasting.” He
changed into all black clothing, and although his words were teasing, the
hardness behind the tone was anything but.
“Can I eat them?” Creed asked.
Raina shook her head. “You promised to be nice to my
“Can I let Liv eat them?”
Their sister snorted. “No, you told her she couldn’t do that
either. Come on, boys. Let’s get this party started.”
Lucas focused on Jenna’s sweet smile and promised himself
they’d have her tucked between them soon. When he opened his eyes, his brother
was staring with that same single minded intent on his face. “We’ll get her
back and make sure she can’t escape without one of us always knowing where
she’s at.”
Raina snorted. “You two will learn, a woman like Jenna won’t
take to being caged or coddled.”
He met Creed’s dark stare. “How’s that working for you,
Creed lifted his middle finger. “You still wanting a way out
of here, or we gonna sling insults back and forth? Believe me, your little
nickname is nothing compared to the things I’ve been through and trust me, boy,
I’ve definitely had much bigger beings say much nastier things than that to
Instant regret punched him in the gut. “Damn it, I’m sorry
man. You’re right. Hellboy isn’t meant to be a…bad thing. Shit! I like you and
I think you’re great for our sister.”
His sister’s mate tilted his head and nodded. “Good enough.
Let’s go. One big circle like…well, one big happy family.”
Damien groaned. “Son of a bitch, not you, too.”
Their sister clapped like she was proud to be part of the
crazy, wrapping one arm around Creed and held the other out. He moved forward,
slipping his hand in hers, waiting for Damien to grab onto his other one.
Once they formed a circle, Creed’s lips formed a straight
line. “Here we go boys and my girl.”
Darkness came quickly. The opulent bedroom replaced by a
forest that had gone eerily quiet. Creed moved next to Raina, waving his hand
around her, changing the sexy dress she’d had on into all black, making her
resemble a character from the movie Underworld. He didn’t have time to question
the man as they all seemed to notice the unnatural quietness.
“Anyone know exactly where we are?” Damien’s voice echoed
around them.
Creed closed his eyes, then opened them quickly. “We’re
still on Earth. Something is unnatural here, but it’s not demon born.”

17834909Spademan used to be a garbage man. That was before the dirty bomb hit Times Square, before his wife was killed, and before the city became a bombed-out shell of its former self. Now he’s a hitman.
In a New York City split between those who are wealthy enough to “tap into” a sophisticated virtual reality for months at a time and those left to fend for themselves in the ravaged streets, Spademan chose the streets. His clients like that he doesn’t ask questions, that he works quickly, and that he’s handy with a box cutter. He finds that killing people for money is not that different from collecting trash, and the pay is better. His latest client hires him to kill the daughter of a powerful evangelist. Finding her is easy, but the job quickly gets complicated: his mark has a shocking secret and his client has an agenda far beyond a simple kill. Now Spademan must navigate the dual levels of his world-the gritty reality and the slick fantasy-to finish the job, to keep his conscience clean, and to stay alive.

My review

So there were some really interesting concepts and technology included in this novel. One that plays a huge role in the story is kind of like a virtual reality bed. People spend a majority of their lives now “tapping in”. This is referring to the act of going into the this virtual world and living out a different life or fantasy/made up reality. It reminds me of like what happens in the movie Avatar except you dont have an actual avatar body to sync up to, it is you just like all in your head (if that makes sense) It makes me think of Second Life which is that virtual world that people can get into via the computer. They create avatars and live out faux lives. A couple years ago this was a big thing in the U.S. and I had watched a tv thing on it which many people spend a majority of their time online in these fictional worlds living out fantasy lives. While reading this is what I kept being reminded of, but the book takes it to a whole new level because it is actually something that you, yourself participates in with wires and everything hooked up to your body. People have to hire nurses to make sure they are healthy and feed via a bag because they spend so much time tapped in.

So to get to the discussion part of this. I felt like this was a really interesting thing to think about while I was reading. When the rest of the world in ruins, with much of what you knew as life destroyed, would you choose to live in a virtual reality world? Why or why not? If yes, what are some things that would be in your fantasy/virtual world? Are there anythings you wish you could do (different profession, living in different place, married to a celebrity) that would be greatly different from your current life? Do you think that this will be a real option in the near future? If it does become a technology that is introduced into our society, what do you think will happen to our world and society?

I felt like the book took me longer to read because I kept stopping and thinking about all the things that were happening in the book. I have to say that although it would be interesting to “tap in” every once in awhile, I think I would be one of those ones who gets so sucked into the virtual world that it would be the end of me. I feel like that is like reading for me now. Sometimes the world and reality are tough and it is nice to escape into a fantasy world, like books. For me I need reality to ground me and I would feel like I was just running away. There are many things that I would make true in my fantasy world, I mean who doesn’t think about that every now and then. There are so many celebrities and fictional characters I am obsessed with (probably to an unhealthy extent haha). I think I would want to travel the world and try everything, dabble in a few different professions just because I can. I think I would also have a pet unicorn because that would be fun! There are just too many options! I think it could be a real possibility, but still has at least 50 or so years before anything close to it could start to be developed.

I hope this all makes sense and that you take the time to add to the discussion. I would love to hear other peoples thoughts about this topic because it is so intriguing. I would love to have other people to talk to about this book as well so check out the giveaway!

As I lay there, trying to swallow a loud, obnoxious yawn, I remembered something he’d said when we first met, about life being too short. I imagined he had firsthand experience with shortened lives while he was serving. That mentality came from experience. I got that now. Could even understand it, but there was something I didn’t understand.

“Why?” I asked.

There was a beat. “Why what?”

Jax sounded tired, and I should shut up or point out that I was now tired and could sleep, so he could leave. But I didn’t. “Why are you here? You don’t know me and . . .” I trailed off, because there really wasn’t anything left to say.

A minute went by, and he hadn’t answered my question, and then I think another minute ticked on, and I was okay with him not answering because maybe he didn’t even know. Or maybe he was just bored and that was why he was here.

But then he moved.

Jax pressed against my back, and the next breath I took got stuck in my throat. My eyes shot open. The sheet and blanket were between us, but they felt like nothing.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

“Getting comfortable.” He dropped an arm over my waist, and my entire body jerked against his. “It’s time to sleep I think.”

“You can’t sleep when you talk,” he remarked.

“You don’t need to be all up on me,” I pointed out.

His answering chuckle stirred the hair along the back of my neck. “Honey, I’m not all up on you.”

I freaking begged to differ on that point. I started to wiggle away, but the arm around my waist tightened, holding me in place.

“You’re not going anywhere,” he announced casually, as if he wasn’t holding me prisoner in the bed.

Okay. The whole prisoner thing might be melodramatic, but he wasn’t letting me up. Not when he was getting all kinds of comfy behind me.

Oh my God, this was spooning. Total spooning. I was spooning with an honorary member of the Hot Guy Brigade. Did I wake up in a parallel universe?

“Sleep,” he demanded, as if the one word carried that much power. “Go to sleep, Calla.” This time his voice was softer, quieter.

“Yeah, it doesn’t work that way, Jax. You have a nice voice, but it doesn’t hold the power to make me sleep on your command.”

He chuckled.

I rolled my eyes, but the most ridiculous thing ever was the fact that after a couple of minutes, my eyes stayed shut. I . . . I actually settled in against him. With his front pressed to my back, his long legs cradling mine, and his arm snug around my waist, I actually did feel safe. More than that, I felt something else—something I hadn’t felt in years.

I felt cared for . . . cherished.

Which was the epitome of dumb, because I barely knew him, but feeling that, recognizing what the warm, buzzing feeling was, I fell right asleep.

The Girl From The Well by Rin Chupeco | Giveaway

Screen Shot 2014-04-08 at 3.38.38 PM

A few months ago I received an e-Arc of The Girl From The Well by Rin Chupeco from netgalley in return for an honest review. I was recently contacted by the publisher and asked if I would like to hold a giveaway. If you haven’t already seen the review of the book I did I will link it up here!

The Girl From The Well by Rin Chupeco

This is the first time I have read a book like this and I have found that it just really wasn’t my thing. I am all about supporting debut authors and getting there work out there and give them the attention they deserve. I really want to be able to give someone this book and hear their thoughts on it! Rin Chupeco had a unique and interesting style of writing and overall had a spine chill inducing feel throughout the whole story that made me only read it with the lights on!

Japanese Legend That Inspired The Ring Is Retold from Murdered Spirit’s Perspective in Debut Horror Thriller

The Girl from The Well ● Author: Rin Chupeco

Sourcebooks Fire ● August 5, 2014 ● ISBN: 9781402292187

Hardcover/$16.99 U.S. ● Ages 14+

Praise for The Girl From the Well:

“[A] Stephen King–like horror story…A chilling, bloody ghost story that resonates.” –Kirkus Reviews

“Chupeco makes a powerful debut with this unsettling ghost story…told in a marvelously disjointed fashion from Okiku’s numbers-obsessed point of view, this story unfolds with creepy imagery and an intimate appreciation for Japanese horror, myth, and legend.” –Publishers Weekly, STARRED

“The Girl from the Well is part The Ring, part The Grudge and part The Exorcist…A fantastically creepy story sure to keep readers up at night… Okiku is one of the most interesting YA characters to date.” RT Book Reviews, 4 ½ STARS-TOP PICK!

“A dark novel that will appeal to horror fans, lovers of Elizabeth Scott’s ‘Living Dead Girl.’” –School Library Journal

The Ring meets The Exorcist in this haunting and lyrical reimagining of the Japanese fable.

Okiku has wandered the world for hundreds of years, setting free the spirits of murdered children. Wherever there’s a monster hurting a child, her spirit is there to deliver punishment. Such is her existence, until the day she discovers a troubled American teenager named Tark and the dangerous demon that writhes beneath his skin, trapped by a series of intricate tattoos. Tark needs to be freed, but there is one problem—if the demon dies, so does its host.

With the vigilante spirit Okiku as his guide, Tark is drawn deep into a dark world of sinister doll rituals and Shinto exorcisms that will take him far from American suburbia to the remote valleys and shrines of Japan. Can Okiku protect him from the demon within or will her presence bring more harm? The answer lies in the depths of a long-forgotten well

Rin Chupeco: Despite uncanny resemblances to Japanese revenants, Rin Chupeco has always maintained her sense of humor. Raised in Manila, Philippines, she keeps four pets: a dog, two birds, and a husband. She’s been a technical writer and travel blogger, but now makes things up for a living. The Girl from the Well is her debut novel. Connect with Rin at http://www.rinchupeco.com.

Hexed by Michelle Krys [Author Interview]

In anticipation of Hexed being released June 10th 2014! Here is my interview with Michelle Krys and Hexed Giveaway!

Hexed_cover_7_30_13 HEXED BY MICHELLE KRYS

If high school is all about social status, Indigo Blackwood has it made. Sure, her quirky mom owns an occult shop, and a nerd just won’t stop trying to be her friend, but Indie is a popular cheerleader with a football-star boyfriend and a social circle powerful enough to ruin everyone at school. Who wouldn’t want to be her?

Then a guy dies right before her eyes. And the dusty old family Bible her mom is freakishly possessive of is stolen. But it’s when a frustratingly sexy stranger named Bishop enters Indie’s world that she learns her destiny involves a lot more than pom-poms and parties. If she doesn’t get the Bible back, every witch on the planet will die. And that’s seriously bad news for Indie, because according to Bishop, she’s a witch too.

Suddenly forced into a centuries-old war between witches and sorcerers, Indie’s about to uncover the many dark truths about her life—and a future unlike any she ever imagined on top of the cheer pyramid. [Goodreads] [My Review of Hexed]

1.Who/What was your inspiration for becoming a writer? How long have you been writing?

Writing a book is something I’ve always wanted to do, but it wasn’t until I was on a yearlong maternity leave almost five years ago that I finally gave it a shot. My son slept through the night and took amazing three to four hour naps during the day, and I found myself with all this free time on my hands. I realized that if I was ever going to write that book, this was my big chance.

I spent my free time that year writing and editing my first novel. Like many first novels, it sucked, but I’d learned a ton and had so much fun in the process, so I poured all of that passion and excitement into my next novel—Hexed.

I’m so glad I finally gave writing a book a try!

2. What was your motivation/inspiration to base Hexed on witches and witchcraft?

I’ve always loved witches, but I got the idea for Hexed from my sister. One day she told me about an adult historical novel she wanted to write, which she’d planned to call “The Witch Hunter’s Bible”. I loved the title and it gave me all these ideas for a YA novel I could write, so when she later decided to ditch the adult historical and write something else entirely, I asked her if I could use the title for my project. She agreed, and Hexed was born! (The title obviously changed during the editorial process. Both hold a special place in my heart!)

3. Do you have any favorite witchy things (books/movies/etc) ?

The Craft is by far my favorite witch movie. I was in the fifth grade when it first came out and was so obsessed with it that I started a witchcraft club with some friends, which convened nightly in my bedroom. We called ourselves The Hallow Hunters. (Go ahead and laugh!)

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is my favorite witchy TV show (Willow!!!), but I also loved Charmed and Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

As for books, HEX HALL by Rachel Hawkins is a favorite. It’s so voicey and fun!

4. How long have you been working on Hexed? Did you always mean for there to be more one than one book? How many books do you plan to have in the series?

The first draft of Hexed too roughly 4 months to write, but editing and polishing it took the better part of two years. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read that book!

At the moment, there will be two books in the HEXED series, with the sequel coming out sometime in 2015, but I would love to write more if there was ever a demand. I don’t feel quite done with Indie and Co. yet!

5. Which of your characters from Hexed would you say you are most like?

I’d have to say Indie. While I was never a cheerleader and I definitely wasn’t popular in high school, we do share the same dry, sarcastic sense of humor and general life attitude.

6. If your book was to be turned into a movie who would you cast as your leads?

That’s so hard! Hexed is really carried by Indie’s sense of humor, so whoever played her would need to have really great comedic timing, first and foremost. But if I were going by appearance alone, Gabriella Wilde looks just like the Indie I see in my head.

7. Did you have to research anything for Hexed?

During the editorial process, my editor noted a few things that didn’t seem overly L.A-like in the book. I’d never been, so my sister and I went down for an emergency trip to check things out. It was the most fun I’ve ever had doing research!

8. In 5 words how would you describe Hexed?

The Craft meets Bring it On. (Six—I cheated!)

9. In my opinion, I would say that Indigo isn’t the typical heroine. What was your inspiration for this character?

A lot of witch books feature quiet, outcast, introverted girls, and I thought it would be fun to subvert that stereotype in HEXED. I asked myself what the exact opposite of quiet and outcast was, and the answer was popular, extroverted cheerleader. Thus, Indie was born.

[ I would again like to thank Michelle Krys for allowing me to ask her questions and taking the time to them! Check out her Debut novel Hexed! ]

Michelle Krys lives with her husband and son in Northwestern Ontario, Canada. She works part-time as a NICU nurse and spends her free time writing books for teens. Michelle is probably not a witch, though she did belong to a witchcraft club in the fifth grade and “levitated” people in her bedroom, so that may be up for debate. Hexed is her first novel.
