Synopsis

Anne Ashburn is a woman consumed…

By her bitter family legacy, by her scorched career as a firefighter, by her obsession with department bad-boy Danny McGuire, and by a new case that pits her against a fiery killer.

Strong-willed Anne was fearless and loved the thrill of fighting fires, pushing herself to be the best. But when one risky decision at a warehouse fire changes her life forever, Anne must reinvent not only her job, but her whole self.

Shattered and demoralized, Anne finds her new career as an arson investigator a pale substitute for the adrenaline-fueled life she left behind. She doesn’t believe she will ever feel that same all-consuming passion for her job again–until she encounters a string of suspicious fires setting her beloved city ablaze.

Danny McGuire is a premiere fireman, the best in the county, but in the midst of a personal meltdown. Danny is taking risks like never before and seems to have a death wish until he teams up with Anne to find the fire starter. But Danny may be more than a distraction, and as Anne narrows in on her target, the arsonist begins to target her.

From the creator of the bestselling Black Dagger Brotherhood, get ready for a new band of brothers. And a firestorm.

“Sometimes strength rested not in resistance, but in the release of arms against a foe of one’s own creation.”

Being a huge fan of TV shows like 9-1-1 and Station 19, Ward has created an explosive story that has a wide array of characters all with their own drama and situations going on. And of course the action of running in while others are running out.

From the first page I was pulled in as the characters are responding to a two alarm fire, and was on the edge of my seat as I flipped through the pages.

“The strong do not wallow. They move forward.”

Although I am a huge fan of JR Ward and believe she does a fantastic job developing and building a world/setting. I think the fact that this was a contemporary story it was more character focused. The middle of the book fell a little flat for me. Ward had introduced a lot of characters and it works towards setting up a series of books based on other characters. But I felt like there were some really odd chapters with side characters just sprinkled in. I wish it would have focused a little more closely on Anne and Danny. Some of the chapters were important towards the plot and solving the mystery, but others were just there.

I did like being able to see Anne and Danny go through their recovery and how to move on after something life changing happens. They do have a lot of baggage that they have to work through. The best part of the whole book was most definitely Soot!

“That was the thing about life. Habit and routine made things feel permanent, but that was all an illusion based on the very flimsy foundation of repetition. Change and chaos was a far better bet to put your faith in.”

The ending of the book I did not see coming at all and really made up for a lot of the long drawn out middle of the book.  There were still some plot holes not answered and I guess that could be for the set up of another book. But I am interested to see where Ward is going to take the series because the driving point of this book to me was the mystery/unsolved case. More so than the romance aspect, which did not make me mad. I am interested to see where the relationship goes and what is going to happen in the next book/ who it is going to be based on. Overall I thought this was an enjoyable book with some great shocks and tons of characters.
