“I am confident, I am capable, and I will not wait to be rescued by a woodsman or a hunter.”

– Jackson Pearce, Sisters Red

With Sisters Red Jackson Pearce tackled the fairy tale retelling of Little Red Riding Hood. In a world where Fenris (werewolves) roam in dark alleys disguised as beautiful men; seducing and luring vulnerable girls into the dark. Scarlett and her younger sister Rosie hunt and kill the creatures that once upon a time killed their grandmother and took Scarlett’s eye. The hunt is all that Scarlett cares about. Nothing will stop her from getting revenge on the Fenris that claimed her beauty and grandmother when she was younger.

With the return of their friend Silas who is a huntsman. There is always an increase in the presence of the Fenris. Rosie struggles with the hunt and having a real life and when suddenly drawn to Silas the situation becomes worse. The hunt is all Scarlett cares about. Rosie does not want to ruin the bond that they share, but she is not passionate about the hunt. She agrees to help Scarlett with the large amount of Fenris entering Georgia along with Silas.

There were times through this book that were slow and not all that I thought they could be. I’m not much for happily ever afters and so was a little disappointed in the ending, but I guess it is a fairy tale so it is meant to have a happy ending. I thought the way in which Pearce attacked this story was creative and a nice twist from the original. I was just expecting a little more .

But the big mystery of who is the potential and to be the next in line. Was easy to figure out and did not create much suspense. Also Rosie was a pretty dull character. Besides toward the end when she finally came into her own she was just following Scarlett. She was not her own person. There was not much that jumped out and was spectacular. It was intriguing and was an easy read. Nothing like werewolves and a strong female lead.

“Knowledge does have a way of making you an outcast.”
