First Lines | June 2019

I decided that it would be fun to start a new feature; first lines to add the the wrap up of books I read every month. For me most of the time I pick up and look at books in the store it is the first lines that capture my attention and draw me in. It has always been intriguing to me the amount of thought that must go into those first words the author decides to but as the introduction to their work. The first lines are your first impression of the book.” I hadn’t spoken to Whitley Lansing – or any of them- in over a year”

Tarnished Crown by Erin Watt

“Why did I agree to come here? I grumble as I look around the crowded room.”

Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige

” I first discovered I was trash three days before my ninth birthday – one year after my father lost his job and moved to Secaucus to live with a woman named Crystal and four years before my mother had the car accident, started taking pills, and began exclusively wearing bedroom slippers instead of normal shoes.”

The Leopard King by Ann Aguirre

“This lonely mountain was where the leopard king had come to die.”

The Storm Crow by Kalyn Josephson

“I was a storm.”

The Rogue King by Abigail Owen

” The scent of raw meat, tinged with putrid rot, curled around Serefina, filling her nostrils and awakening a memory she would have sooner forgotten.”

The Mate by Abigail Owen

“What the hell am I doing here?”
