The Things I Do When I Should Be Reading

Being a book lover and having more unread books than one person could ever read in a lifetime, one of the biggest struggles is making time to be an adult and read books. It sad that I am at that point in life where I am to schedule out time in the day that can be set aside for reading. I have even gotten to the point where I listen to audiobooks so that I can listen while I cook, clean, get ready for work and workout. There just never seem to be enough time and yet so many books that I am dying to read. There are other books I get FOMO (fear of missing out) about because everyone else has read it and is talking about it. With all of that being said I have also noticed lately that I seem to find anything and everything to distract me from reading. My procrastination always gets the best of me. I will sit down to read and then 2 hours later I have somehow ended up deep down the hole of something that was not the book I was meaning to read. I thought I would share some of those things that have been distracting me and I have been doing instead of reading.

♥ Binge Watch Netflix/Hulu/HBO

I am not a fan of silence since I live alone so I  spend a lot of time streaming TV shows and Movies. Especially rewatching tv shows I have seen so many times. Gilmore Girls is a constant fall back and a show I have seen more than 4 times completely all the way through. I usually put something on for background noise , but end up getting sucked into the show. I am currently rewatching Reign so that I can watch the final season. If you are ever in need of tv/movie recs from Netflix, Hulu, HBO, or Amazon Prime, I am your girl.

♥ Bothering/Playing with the Kittens

Usually my bratty cats are always bothering me and get into a lot of things making me get up and stop them. I spend so much time as I try to read chasing after them when they get into things they shouldn’t be. There are also a lot of times they bring me their toys to play fetch or I am busy cleaning up their messes. They are like having small children. Even as I am typing this I have had to get up multiple times to deal with them. On their defense sometimes they are just very cute and I spend time taking pictures of them.

♥ Social Interactions

It doesn’t happen very often, but sometimes I do come outside from my isolation from humans and do social things. A few months ago I attended the Macklemore and Ke$ha concert in Kansas City with a coworker. It was the second time seeing Ke$ha and lets just say she is my spirit animal for sure! Just recently I also went on a day long float trip down a river with another awesome coworker/friend and a group of her friends. It was definitely quite the experience, but made for some good memories. I also am a Big Sister in the Big Brother Big Sister Mentor Program. My little sister and I get together at least twice a month and always do fun things. We recently saw The Meg and let me tell you I do not believe it was something a 9 year old should see since even I jumped multiple times.

Another thing I am so very guilty of is taking naps. I struggle a lot to fall asleep and stay asleep at night, but I am a Nap Queen. I can basically nap anywhere and nap multiple times a day, you would think I am an expert sleeper.

♥ Trip to the Zoo!

I finall made it to the Omaha Zoo, it only took me a whole year. I absolutely adore the zoo and cannot believe I have waited this long to go. I could have spent all day there, the animals were absolutely beautiful, but it was so humid I was dripping sweat.

♥ Baking Goodies

One of my other passions besides reading is definitely baking. I enjoy being in the kitchen and baking up a mess (not so much cleaning it). I love trying out new recipes and trying different things. I spent this past weekend baking some cookies as well as watching the newest season of The Great British Baking Show!

Top Ten Tuesday| Top Movies To Get In The Halloween Spirit

Untitled design-9
This weeks Top Ten Tuesday topic hosted by Broke and Bookish is The Top Ten Movies to Get In The Halloween Spirit! I decided to go with movies because Halloween Movies are my absolute favorites! Especially Slasher Films! I also already did a Top Ten Books To Read For Halloween list (which should be updated due to the books I have recently read! So it is like a two in one this week! Also these movies are in no particular order and are a mix of scary, slasher and great kid movies! And I would also like to make it known that the original slasher movies (from the late 70s) are the best! I am obsessed with movies so there are so many more I wish I could add.

MV5BMTY0Nzk0NTk2OF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNjQ3NTk0MQ@@._V1_SY317_CR3,0,214,317_AL_Halloween (1978)

Really any of the movies in this franchise! I love them all and Michael Meyers is my favorite Slasher! Every Halloween Season I make sure that I take a day to marathon all of these movies!

MV5BMjA0NDQ2MzMxMF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwODg5MTkzMjE@._V1_SX214_AL_ Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

For as long as I can remember I have been obsessed with this movie and also had a huge issue with chainsaws in haunted houses and maizes when younger. I even own this movie on VHS! I do think the other adaptions of this movie are good too!

MV5BMTMxOTk4NjMzOV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwOTQ3NDAzMg@@._V1_SX214_AL_Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

Someone killing you in your dreams /nightmares is scary shit. Put that together with the fact that Freddy looks creepy as shit.

MV5BOTYzNDkwNTA1NF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMjIyNDAyMQ@@._V1_SY317_CR4,0,214,317_AL_Friday The 13th (1980)

Another slasher film I know. Jason is just as awesome as the other slashers. Creepy camp setting adds to the fact that there is a killer running around.

MV5BMTU4NzMyMjAyOV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTYwNjY0MzI5._V1_SY317_CR1,0,214,317_AL_Poltergeist (1982)

This is the first horror movie I remember ever watching and it scared the crap out of me. The second one is even worst. I have no idea why at the age of 8 my parents thought it would be okay to let me watch this.

MV5BMTI4OTU2NjY5OF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTYwOTQ2Mzg3._V1_SX214_AL_Dawn of the Dead (2004)

This is a great Zombie movie. If you want a good laugh though you should watch the 1970s version! Zombies are a must have for Halloween time.  Although 28 Days Later is another good one I believe this one is my favorite one!

MV5BMTM1MjAyMjIxMF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTYwNzI0MDg5._V1_SY317_CR0,0,214,317_AL_Darkness Falls (2003)

A scary killer tooth fairy….I think that is enough said.

MV5BNTczNjA4NzczMV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMTkzMTQyMQ@@._V1_SX214_AL_Addams Family (1991)

This is a classic! I love the Addams Family. I have to say Wednesday is my role model she is just so fantastic. This family is so kooky and so awesome!

MV5BMTU4Njg1MDkxMl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNjk2MjAzMQ@@._V1_SY317_CR5,0,214,317_AL_Halloweentown (1998)

This is a solid staple to the Halloween season. I love all 4 of the Halloweentown movies and it also shows how awesome Disney Channel Original Movies use to be.

MV5BMTI3MDI2NDc3Ml5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNDQ2MzQyMQ@@._V1_SY317_CR3,0,214,317_AL_Hocus Pocus (1993)

I have already watched this movie like 5 times this year. If you don’t watch this movie and/or don’t like it I don’t know if we can be friends. This movie is fun and has witches, talking cats and a zombie!

Some Honorable Mentions:

The Village (2004)

Scream (1996)

The Hills Have Eyes (2006)

Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Sweeney Todd (2007)

What are some of your favorite horror/ Halloween movies to get in the spirit for the holiday?

So I have always had this weird thing about aliens. I always picture them as these ugly little green things with huge eyes. Because of this I have always been deterred from watching and reaching alien related things. Lately though for some reason I have has this growing interest in the subject matter. I feel like recently they make aliens out to be like robotic and not as gross looking things. Right now I am watching Battleship (2012) and it is really making me want to break into the alien category of Young Adult novels. Does anyone have any recommendations? I would love to here some other peoples opinions on alien related books and movies!

I feel like there has been a big trend taking place recently. What is that trend you ask?

Books to Movies

Book Adaptations

Movies Based on Books

Whatever you would like to call it, it has recently taken over the movie industry. I feel like it is the only thing anyone can talk about lately. It is all over social media. It also seems to be favoring YA books. I know this has always happened, but I feel like lately it is very present and a lot all at once.If you were curious and haven’t been paying attention/live in a cave or just haven’t heard. Here is a list of some Ya novels with movie plans in the future (as of right now)

  • Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins (Which will be split into two parts and follow the previous two books which came out in 2012 and 2013 and Mockingjay is set to come out in the fall of 2014 (pt.1) and 2015 (pt.2)
  • Insurgent by Veronica Roth (Divergent just came out this spring and Insurgent is set to follow next spring (2015))
  • The Fault in Our Stars by John Green (June 6th 2014)
  • The Giver by Lois Lowry (August 15th 2014)
  • The Maze Runner by James Dashner (September 19th 2014. And one I am really excited for because of Dylan O’Brien!)
  • If I Stay by Gayle Forman (August 22nd 2014)
  • Fallen by Lauren Kate (2015)
  • The Chronicles of Narnia: The Silver Chair & The Magicians Newphew by C.S Lewis (neither has a set date but is in the works)
  • Mrs. Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs (July 31st 2015 and is being directed by Tim Burton!)
  • Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor (in development)
  • Angelfall by Susan Ee (in development)
  • The Raven Boys and Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater (in development)
  • The Uglies by Scott Westerfeld (in development)
  • Graceling by Kristin Cashore (it says 2014 but has no other information so I don’t believe it will be this year)
  • Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout (in development)
  • A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray (in development)

These are just some of the many that are in the works. Here are so sources you can go to in order to check out more if you feel so inclined.

I am not sure how I feel about all of these. Sometimes I really enjoy when a movie comes out that is based on a book I love. Other times the adaptation is horrible and such a waste of money. The other thing I don’t like is all the hype that the book gets because of the movie. I should preface this by saying its great for the author that a bunch a people go out and buy the book and support the author and fandom. This thing I dislike is that people only read it for the purpose of reading it before the movie and do not even care about the wonders the books truly hold! Sometimes its those people that can ruin the book for me. Also I think it deters people from reading the book because why read it when you can just watch the movie. I also am really beginning to had how they split movies into parts. The Mockingjay most definitely (in my opinion) does not have enough to be split into two parts and I feel like it is the movie industry just trying to make more money. The fact that the Lord of the Rings movies were each their own and the books are so much bigger than The Hobbit, but yet the Hobbit is being split into three parts.

I will end my rant now! If you stuck around to read this far I applaud you!

So what are your thoughts on the growing trend and popularity of Book to Movie adaptations. I would love to here some other thoughts/opinions/ what one you are most looking forward/etc.

Movie Adaptation Craze

I feel like recently there has been so many movie adaptation happening from the type of books I read. I do not know how I feel about this at all. Some of the movies have done such a great job and others have failed greatly. Since I also hate watching the movie before I read the books I now have to pick up my reading pace and get through a ton of books before the movie is released. The other reason I hate it is because so many people become obsessed with the movies and haven’t even read the books and it gets really annoying and sometimes ruins the love I had for the books. I very much like having read books and series that no one else knows much about and it seems like lately I do that and then all of a sudden they are being made into huge motion pictures and then all of a sudden everyone is obsessed with them. There is such a craze surrounding the books and I don’t like it, but then I do like to see how someone else envisions the book. It is such a double-edged sword and just another way for Hollywood to make money. Well that is my rant for the day.

Book Made Movie

This is one of the worse things to ever happen, at least in my opinion. It is like the film industry does not know how to pick up  a book and actually read it. I understand fully that it is difficult to transform and portray all that is in a book onto a big screen. The thing that gets me is the little things, those little things that only book lovers would notice. Taking a book and creating into a movie is bad news! (Twilight I’m looking at you) Not saying the movies are always bad, but if you read the books sometimes the movies are ruined. The little details that are so easy to put into film are the ones they always seem to leave out. Whether it be a type of car, a specific date, or even the timeline of events, for me the movie is instantly ruined if these things are missing. Now I am not say all people in the film industry are incompetent. I believe there have been a few films that have been produced very well in regards to the content of the book. With all this being said, I am widening my horizons and I am going to be adding a book made movie edition. This will only apply to those books that I have read and are included on this blog, otherwise it could get real messy. As well as being a book lover, I am a huge movie fan!
