June Book Haul | 2017

I haven’t bought many books this year. So it has been awhile since I have shared a haul. I have really been trying to focus on reading the books I own on top of being in a bit of a slump all year. It is getting all better and I have been needing to get my book fix. Have you read any of these books?

On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons From The Twentieth Century by Timothy Snyder

Dark Matter by Blake Crouch

♠ The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden

A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas

Did you get any good books in June?

A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES BY SARAH J. MAAS

Genre: YA, Fantasy, Retelling

“I was as unburdened as a piece of dandelion fluff, and he was the wind that stirred me about the world.”
― Sarah J. Maas, A Court of Thorns and Roses

Series: A Court of Thorns and Roses

Synopsis:
When nineteen-year-old huntress Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, a beast-like creature arrives to demand retribution for it. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she only knows about from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not an animal, but Tamlin—one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled their world.

As she dwells on his estate, her feelings for Tamlin transform from icy hostility into a fiery passion that burns through every lie and warning she’s been told about the beautiful, dangerous world of the Fae. But an ancient, wicked shadow grows over the faerie lands, and Feyre must find a way to stop it… or doom Tamlin—and his world—forever.

review

I first have to start this by saying I cannot believe I waited so long to read something by Sarah J. Maas. The synopsis of this book intrigued me along with the fact that everyone praised Maas’s work, but I am always hesitant with retellings and especially books about fae. This book proved all my hesitation to be pointless.

While there were parallels to the original story of Beauty and the Beast, Maas wove together some fantastical twists and beautiful world building and elements that made this story brilliant. I loved what she was able to do with the incorporation of fae and the groundwork she laid for the world and the story were unique and wonderful! I thought her fusion of the old and new story were so seemingly done. There was the perfect amount of elements taken to still allow for her to make a story that could be completely her own. The way she took some of the most known parts of the original story and put such a twist on them was fantastic. Beauty loves to read and yet Feyre is illiterate. The play on the old story and the fact that without knowing it shares parallels with another story it can be completely its own and still be unique, beautiful and an engrossing story.

Shout out for strong kickass females! Feyre is a feisty, independent and wonderful female lead. She is determined to do anything she can for her family and because of this she must give up her life. I do have to say I was quite surprised with the romance in this book. I absolutely loved it don’t get me wrong, but it was borderline new adult. I just found that shocking since it is a young adult novel, but it did not bother me. I loved the males in this book and felt like they were nicely developed. And although at times there seems to be a hint at a future love triangle, it was not heavy. Tamlin is a complex and interesting character. I enjoyed that you learn about him a little at the time along with Feyre. He was strong and everything you want from a love interest. Not only were the characters and the world amazing, but the creatures that were created were so well developed and explained to a point were I began to sympathize with them. I am always a little weird about fae in books, but Maas did such an excellent job!

Overall I thought this was an amazing story. I absolutely love Maas’s writing and think she has such a fantastic and unique take on stories and world building. A Court of Thorns and Roses had just the right amount of fantastical and beautiful aspects as well as a slight dark atmosphere. Maas brought this world to life and used such beautiful imagery. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy, badass females, beautiful worlds and Maas’s writing.

A Court of Thorns and Roses Fairy Tale Comparison

1

This month Samantha @ Rambling Book Junkie and I are reading A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas for our new Rambling Down the Book Hole Blogger Book Club! As part of our book club we will be making weekly post revolving around the book. To check out Samantha’s post click here! If you are interested join us and read along, I tweet using #RDBHBookClub! So for my post this week I did a book comparison to the original fairy tale. Unknown

If you have read or heard anything about A Court of Thorns and Roses then you know it is suppose to be loosely inspired by the fairy tale Beauty and the Beast. I thought it would be fun to do a slight discussion/comparison post about how the book parallels the original fairy tale. This post although I will try not to, will most likely contain spoilers.

When reading the book I could understand where the original story was woven through and caught the similarities, but I really think the book was completely its own as well. It was so unique and beautifully done that if I wasn’t aware that it was a retelling I would not have made the comparisons. But since it is a retelling and there are parallels between the story I will talk about a few of them now.

Girl being taken by a beast

So as everyone knows in the original the Beast keeps Belle as a prisoner after making a trade for her fathers life. She is locked up in his castle and set to spend the rest of her life there. In Sarah J. Maas own amazing way she kept true to this part of the story. Feyre traded her life to go live with Tamlin after she had killed a wolf instead of being killed herself.

Curse

In the original Beast has a curse put on him to find true love or he will forever be stuck in the form of a beast forever. In A Court of Thorns and Roses there Faerie lands are being plagued by a curse of sorts and although there are other curses involved they are twisted in a surprising way and come with tons of consequences.

Falling In Love

So this might be a complete spoiler, but what do you expect when a book is said to be inspired off of a known fairy tale. Of course in this book it deals with a human girl falling in love with a “beast”

Interest in the arts

Beauty loves to read. Feyre loves to paint and loves art. The twists that Maas does with this are so interesting. The way she plays with the original story and takes pieces and manipulates them to this story are amazing. In ACoTaR Feyre is illiterate, so it is quiet interesting.

It is apparent the inspiration that came from Beauty and the Beast when reading A Court of Thorns and Roses. There are many differences, it has some fantastic twists and surprises and has a little darker atmosphere.

What parts of the original story stuck out to you while reading this book?

I am currently reading A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas. I am reading this book along with Samantha @ Rambling Book Junkie and we are reading this as our book of the month for our Rambling Down The Book Hole Blogger Book Club! So far I am really enjoying this book and I cant believe I have waited this long to pick up a book by Sarah J. Maas. I am also listening to Sea of Stars by Amy A. Bartol, which is the second book in the Kricket series. I just finished listening to the first book in this series as an audiobook and I was really impressed and surprised by it. It is a YA science fiction about a girl who is taken back to her home by some soldiers, only her home is this other plant called Ethar! 20977124
