Vampire Book Recommendations

Vampires! Book Recommendations

I figured since it is nearing Halloween I would do a Vampire Book Recommendations post. If you haven’t seen my spooky books rec from earlier in the month you can check it out here! I decided to do this one on vampires since that is the category in which I have read the most books. Some of these might be familiar from my other post, but I figured I would explain and talk about the different types of vampires. I am also including some books I wasn’t the hugest fan for, but has a cool concept of vampires.

The evolution of vampires in literature has come a long way since the classic vampire novels such as Dracula and Carmilla. There are so many different explanations and myths created in the vampire trope. Some vampire drink blood or humans, but don’t kill them while others do. Some can be in daylight and even sparkle while others can only come out at night or burn up. In some cases you have to be bitten to be turned while in others you are born into being a vampire. I think because of Twilight (the movies) the sub-genre has gotten a bad rep , but I still really enjoy vampire books and have found that they are all very different.

Vampire Book Recommendations

 Twilight by Stephenie Meyer

As much as everyone talks shit about this book it was like a modern day gateway into the vampire craze. These vampires sparkle in the sunlight and try not to feed on humans, but it happens. You must be bitten to be turned and have to be torn apart and burned to die. They have super strength, are super fast and don’t sleep. For the most part they fit a lot of the myths. Although it is ridiculous and silly I really enjoyed this saga when I first read it. It also has werewolves!

Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

This series has a whole society of vampires called Moroi that have their own ruler and academies that train/educate their children. There are bad vampires called Strigoi that are more like what we think of when we think vampires. The Moroi have guardians that protect them. They drink from humans, but don’t kill them and they also eat normal food as well. They don’t go out during the day and have elemental powers. This is an action packed series with a great developed world.

Dark Lover by J.R Ward

This is an adult paranormal romance series. It also has vampires that are born into being a vampire. They don’t turn until they are 25 and must drink from the opposite sex vampire. They can’t go out during the day and can die in more ways than just staking. They can dematerialize and are not immortal (although they live for a long time) There are things called lessers which are soulless being that are trying to kill the vampires. This is layer with action, hot vampires and romance!

The Hunt by Andrew Fukuda

I was not a huge fan of this book, but still thought it had an interesting concept. The world has been taken over by vampires and few humans are left in the world. The protagonist is one of the few humans left and must pretend to be a vampire. They don’t go out during the day and eat raw bloody meat to get by since not many humans are left. There is a hunt were a few are picked to kill the last few humans remaining in capacity.

Lailah by Nikki Kelly

This was a recent read for me. It is a paranormal romance with vampires and angels. They can go out in the sunlight, but need to feed off humans. They can drink from other vampires, but it is dangerous. Staking the vampires kills them. The world and explanation of where they come from is very interesting. There are purebred and second generation vampires that must be bite to be turned. It is filled with action and some swoon worthy men!

Blood Calling by Joshua Grover-David Patterson

This is another book I wasn’t completely in love with, but it has that old school vampire feel. When I think vampires this book hit all the marks. Lucy finds out that her grandfather was a slayer and must figure out who is killing a bunch of homeless people. It was dark and ominous with the creepy dark silent guy who turns out to be a vampire, but is good. But not everyone is good and there is a bad vampire lurking around.

What are some good vampire book recommendations? Have you read any of these? What are your favorite kind of vampires?
