I just turned off the tv with a tear streaked face, and I remembered why I waited so long to see this movie. Especially why I waited to watch it alone in my apartment. I have so many feelings about this movie. Let me start with how well done this movie was.
Not only is the cinematography fantastic, but the script was excellent and stayed so true to the book. It has been almost a year since I read the book. So I cant remember every detail of it, but it seems to not have missed any of the major element.
I was super impressed with the casting (well besides KJ Apa). The casting was spot on and such good choices for the roles they played. I don’t know what it was about Apa, but I just don’t think he was the right choice. Maybe it was his dyed hair or the fact that he is just goofy.
This movie takes the important message and education that was so beautifully written by Angie Thomas. This film portrays the book into another format that helps to reach the masses. The topics of this are important ones, many people do not understand or know about what Starr and her family go through. Even if you think you understand and are not racist like Hailey. Sometimes its the way you say something or the implication of your words. I think this is also an important way for voices and stories to be heard.
Make sure to check out the book this movie is based on if you haven’t already read it!
