WHITE HOT KISS BY JENNIFER L. ARMENTROUT
Genre: YA, Paranormal Romance
“People with the purest souls are capable of the greatest evils. No one is perfect, no matter what they are or what side they fight for.”
-Jennifer L. Armentrout
Series: The Dark Elements
Synopsis:
One kiss could be the last
Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she’s anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.
Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she’s crushed on since forever.
Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she’s not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn’t an issue, considering Roth has no soul.
But when Layla discovers she’s the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne…it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.[Goodreads]
This is a book that you can most definitely not judge by the cover. Although it looks to be a steamy adult romance novel it is actually about gargoyles and demons. Of course there is romance spread throughout the story, but it focuses on a girl name Layla who is half Warden (gargoyle) and half demon. Layla has unique abilities and struggles with understanding her place in the Warden world. Jennifer L. Armentrout has such a youthful way with words and her dialog reminded me of conversations I have with my friends. The banter between Layla and Roth and Layla and Stacey were on point and so snarky and witty, I loved it! The concept of gargoyles was a new aspect to any paranormal book I have ever read and I thought Armentrout nailed it. She also created some amazing characters, some very swoon worthy guys! Layla is determined and feisty which surprised me because I was expecting her to be another weak female character stuck in a “triangle”. Zayne is strong and protective and then there is Roth! I am so team Roth. Who doesn’t love the bad boy with tattoos? The plot was addictive and was laced with so many twists and turns that were shocking and unexpected that kept me on the edge and guessing the whole time. And that ending….There was very little (triangles) I didn’t like about this. I would recommend this to anyone who loves Supernatural or just some good paranormal romance with some swoon (lust) worthy male characters!
*Spoiler Warning*
I am just going to list all the absolutely wonderful things that I loved about this book:
- There was a snake named Bambi and monstrous kittens!
- Demons, gargoyles and zombies Oh My!
- Amazing secondary characters (Nicolae and Stacey)
- The pop culture reference! (Supernatural &Twilight )
- Gremlins! That is one of my favorite movies and the retort of the Mogwais was so awesome!
- ROTH! I don’t know how much I can fan girl over this/him. The fact that he proved himself and sacrificed himself for Layla was so amazing. His personality and the sarcasm was totally fantastic!
Things I did not like:
- The love triangle thing. I am so over triangle. Even though this was not a full out triangle it was annoying how Layla went back and forth . I believe this made her weak.

Demons and gargoyles. Riiiight. 😉 Love triangle is a big no, no. I don’t think I will be pushing everyone out of my way to pick this up.
Glad you liked it, nonetheless.
I wasn’t able to read your full review, since I don’t want to see spoilers, but I’m glad you enjoyed this book! I’m absolutely in love with JLA’s books and am anxious to read this one, too 🙂
