-J.R. Ward, Dark Lover
Series: Black Dagger Brotherhood
Synopsis:
In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, there’s a deadly turf war going on between vampires and their slayers. There exists a secret band of brothers like no other-six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. Yet none of them relishes killing more than Wrath, the leader of The Black Dagger Brotherhood.
The only purebred vampire left on earth, Wrath has a score to settle with the slayers who murdered his parents centuries ago. But, when one of his most trusted fighters is killed-leaving his half-breed daughter unaware of his existence or her fate-Wrath must usher her into the world of the undead-a world of sensuality beyond her wildest dreams.[Goodreads]
I have to admit I was very hesitant to pick up and read this book. I have never really been big on romance books. I feel so many of them lack a plot and story line other than the relationship and the sexy times. Being a paranormal romance I thought it might provide more of what I want and enjoy, but I was nervous that it would be corny and ridiculous like Twilight because it is about vampires. This book completely surprised me and proved to be an absolutely amazing, action packed and well written novel.
The world that was created by Ward was so complex, detailed and flushed out. I absolutely loved the world and development of the vampire aspects. The vampire society has intricate hierarchy and workings. There are also slayers that are not like the normal slayers we think of when thinking vampires. The slayers are a created society of soulless beings that give up their souls to live longer and are geared to destroy the vampire community. The Black Dagger Brotherhood is a selected group of male vampires that are there to protect their society and other civilian vampires. I did feel like it took awhile to get to the explanation and in depth understanding of the world and all aspects of it. You subtly learn about the world up to that point, but I felt there was a lot of stuff that was left unsaid and I might have been confused if I didn’t read through the glossary at the beginning of the book.
I really enjoyed that the book was written in multiple points of view, it really gave the story depth and was a driving force making the book a quick and captivating read. With the multiple povs you were introduced to many characters and learned the back story and information in more clarity because you were getting it from all sides. I also enjoyed that you learned and followed the story of all the characters and not just the main characters. I loved Beth! I thought she was a great strong female character that was independent and knew what she wanted. Her relationship with Wrath was fabulous and you really got sucked into their intense love. Wrath went through some great character development and growth. It doesn’t hurt that he was a strong and beautiful man. I fell for so many of the Black Dagger Brotherhood members. They are just my type of guy, tall, rugged, sexy filled with tattoos and personality. I don’t know which one I like the best. I was a huge fan of Rhage, but also really love Wrath! All of the BDB guys really made the book for me. It added a whole other aspect to the story than just a love story. There was action, suspense and drama.
Overall this was a unique and well developed world that allowed for an action packed story that was more than just a hot and steamy romance. It has amazing, hilarious, sassy, strong and sexy main characters and secondary characters. The story was complex and was so much more than I expected it to be. The book was gripping and had so many elements involved that I could not put the book down. It did have some steamy sexy times so this is definitely for mature audience, but there was more content than just sexy times. I can’t wait to pick up the next books so I can learn more about all the other guys and their love lives!
