LGBTQIA+ Book Recommendations

LGBTQIA+ Book Recommendations

With it being PRIDE Month, I thought I should finally get around to putting together a LGBTQIA+ Book Recommendations post! I’ve been working on parts over the last few months and cannot wait to share some of the Queer reads I love! I will caveat this with I understand these books don’t reflect great diversity with the MC, but a few of these are filled with an array of queer characters. I’ll share that being bisexual, I do find myself drawn to reads with bi characters as well as books with f/f romances because it is a way for me to see characters that reflect similarities to me.

I am working on being better in diversifying my queer reads as well as my reading in general. I have a whole LGBTQIA+ TBR that I am working my way through and hoping to add more to this list very soon!

LGBTQIA+ Book Recommendations

Belle Révolte by Linsey Miller

Two girls fighting for what they want and to prove they are enough. Set in the backdrop of a french revolutionary style fantasy sprinkled with magic and queer representation.

The element I found to be on point in Belle Révolte was the queer representation! There was an array of individuals on the spectrum of sexuality/gender. One of the MC is asexual, there is a transgender man, several non binary characters and an adorable f/f couple. I enjoyed that in the society and to all of the characters, the queer characters were totally accepted and there was no negativity or hate towards those characters.

The Winter Duke by Claire Eliza Bartlett

Such a unique fantastical world all wrapped up in an intricately woven plot.I absolutely adored how the world was fully accepting of LGBTQIA+ and they were incorporated in every aspect. There was no slurs, hate or head turns for the gender neutral titles, non-binary, queer characters.

It was a page turner that packed a punch and concluded with a satisfying ending which is hard to do in a standalone fantasy. It had an adorable f/f slowburn romance that I was behind from the beginning. And a hero I could not help but to fully support! If you love LGBTQIA+ rep, political intrigue on ice and a young woman proving that she can find the solution all on her own, then this is a book for you!

We Set The Dark On Fire by Tehlor Kay Mejia

In a fashion much like The Handmaid’s Tale, this book is set in a dystopian setting, with some unique lore/myth behind the rules of the society. The men of power have 2 wives which split the duties and run the household each with their own purpose. I loved learning about the world and how it came about as well as the issues challenging the society. With a rebellion/revolution growing the MCs must decide what side they fall on in the fight.

It is a fantasy inspired, diverse read that covers many relevant topics that we face as a society. There are some strong female characters, and it has queer latinx rep, featuring a f/f romance.

Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan

This Asian inspired fantasy explores a unique caste system, a forbidden romance and some darker topics while showcasing a complex beautifully developed world with a cast of characters that have you feeling all types of emotions. I loved the wide variety of characters and personalities present in this story. All of the paper girls really grew on my by the end even though I was not a fan of some at the beginning.

The romance, I called from the beginning and I was so for it and rooting for it the entire time. Not only was it a f/f but it was forbidden which had me wanting it even more! It was unique, emotional and beautifully descriptive and well written.

Of Fire and Stars by Audrey Coulthurst

This is another book where the queer rep doesn’t seem to meet negativity. The problem with the relationship is that the MC falls in love with one person while she is betrothed to another. This is an own voices LGBTQIA novel that features a f/f romance between two princesses. The sexuality is never exactly explained but the MC Mare does have feeling for both a man and a women so for me it seems to tend towards bisexual rep.

The magic was interesting in this one. The book I felt was more of a fantasy romance and isn’t what you would expect from an epic/high fantasy. It is a bit slow to start, but if you love horses, princesses and queer rep, you need to check this one out. I need to pick up the sequel/prequel.

Wild And Crooked by Leah Thomas

In this heartwarming book about accepting yourself and not letting anyone make you feel like you aren’t good enough or capable of more, Wild and Crooked focuses on those kids on the outer edges of the high school crowd. Thomas created a book that highlighted the underrated characters with some great representation and platonic relationships! It has disability rep, as well as pansexual and lesbian rep! It was so refreshing to read a book that had such a strong platonic friendship that was the focus!

The Scapegracers by Hannah Abigail Clarke

The words I would use to describe this book are dark, witchy, antsy and queer! You have the typical high school stereotype covered, the outcast, mean girls, cute stranger and jocks.

This book wasn’t perfect and at times was missing some elements for me, but the characters were messy and so real. There was tons of magic, some mystery and twists. It was full of female friendships, a “found family” (coven) and tons of queer rep! You have f/f relationship of sorts, gay rep, wlw, and characters that are still discovering their sexuality
