2018 Beat The Backlist Challenge | February Update

I have some really big goals for myself with this new year, both personally and with regards to books. This will be the first year that I will be in one place (hopefully) not juggling school or the constant traveling I have experience that past few years. I am really trying to focus on myself and trying to limit distractions and drama. One of my biggest book goals next year is to read the books I own and definitely catch up on series I am so far behind on or that I need to read. (Shoutout to Alex @ Booksy Daisy for posting her tbr and convincing me to do this!) Beat the Backlist hosted by Novel knight is the perfect challenge. (I do better when I am able to mark off a list so challenges work so well for me) Now I cannot make promises that the books I list are going to be the ones I actually read, but it is the goal to get these ones specifically. I am setting myself the goal of 50 books! I haven’t decided what I want my year goal to be, but with the hopes of tackling the books on my shelf I definitely want to focus more on the backlist and older books!

THE CHALLENGE

  • The challenge will run from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2018.
  • Books must be released prior to 2018 to count for this challenge.

Do I Read/ Continue? | Rants & Riddles

So I recently was going through my kindle and updating my goodreads with the books I own. I realized I own a lot of ebooks that I have forgotten about and that I need to be better at keeping track of these. Also I need to start reading these books because as I went through the list I noticed some books that I am intrigued by and want to read sooner than others. I also noticed something else really interesting. There are a few kindle books in which I own the 1st and/or the 1st and 2nd books. As I was looking at them in goodreads it became apparent that the books following in the series are not out yet. Now of course this comes to no surprise because you cannot expect all the books in the series to be out right away, but with these books they have been out for years. There is one book, which is a fantasy book (so you know those usually are not standalone and don’t just end with everything all wrapped up nicely) that the 1st book came out in 2013 and there is still no information about when the 2nd book will be published if it even will. The best example I have is the Gentleman Bastard Series by Scott Lynch. When I first discovered The Lies of Locke Lamora, I was so intrigued and fell in love with Lynch’s writing, world development and the overall story. I have put off reading the 3rd book forever because the publication date of the 4th one keeps getting pushed back. It would be so sad to see this awesome series just end where it is without being completed. But if I knew that before I read the 1st book I might not have picked it up at all.

I feel like this situation is much like how I feel about TV shows that got cancelled. There are some that people rave about the first few seasons, but then the show gets cancelled for whatever reason. But you want to watch because everyone says its so good. In doing so though you know that you will be left with questions that go unanswered. I have a hard time doing this. Even with completed series of tv shows, there are endings that I am unhappy with or feel like it didn’t end right, answering all the questions I had.

So I guess what I am trying to get at is, Are these books worth reading? Do I spend my time reading a story that may never be complete?

5 Series I Want To Read in 2018 | 2018 Goals

I have been asked by a couple of people what series I plan on reading this year. I have the overall goal to complete 10 series this year (that doesn’t mean start to finish, just completing). I also have a long list of series I need to read and I am working on with my Series Serial Reader Challenge. The 5 series I want to read are going to be the ones I want to read from start to finish!

The Immortals Series by Tamora Pierce

The Shattered Sea Trilogy by Joe Abercrombie

(Half A King is a reread)

The Looking Glass Wars Trilogy by Frank Beddor

The Magicians Trilogy by Lev Grossman

The Broken Empire Trilogy by Mark Lawrence

What are some series you are hoping to read in 2018?

Top Ten Tuesday| Top Books On My Fall TBR

This weeks Top Ten Tuesday topic hosted by Broke and Bookish is The Top Ten Books On My Fall TBR! I have been putting a lot of books aside waiting for fall/winter. Fall books are those that are either fantasy/paranormal or thrillers!

The Magicians by Lev Grossman

I have been meaning to read this book for a long time. I have heard such good things and really want to pick it up!

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K Rowling

I know, how have I not read this yet. Life has gotten in the way the past few years and I never picked them up when I was younger, but it is time.

Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawerence

Because dark fantasy series are best read in the fall!

The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner

This has been on my radar for awhile. It looks like a good fantasy!

The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani

This is about boarding schools. I thought it gave that real fall vibe with the back to school.

Vengeance Road by Erin Bowman

I just feel like reading a YA Western is appropriate in the fall. I have never read anything like this and cant wait to pick it up!

Blood Bound by Patricia Briggs

Because I started this series and I am already hooked. It is a great urban fantasy that not only has a great cast of characters but an interesting plot and overall story.

Night Film by Marisha Pessl

I think this would be a good thriller going into the halloween season!

Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel

I have picked this book up multiple time in order to start it and haven’t actually gotten around to it. It seemed like a good book to read in the fall.

The Girl With All The Gifts by M.R. Carey

Fall is the time to read weird and creepy books.

What are some books you plan/ want to read this fall?

Book Blogger Shout-Out | Dee @ The Bookish Khaleesi

2

So if you have been around on my blog you will know of my new feature: Book Blogger Shout-Out! The purpose of this is to showcase some awesome book bloggers! This month I reached out and asked Dee @ The Bookish Khaleesi if she would be so kind to participate and be featured for my Book Blogger Shout-out! Her blog is fantastic and so adorable! She has some awesome graphics and posts with tons of pictures! She reads a wide variety and I totally recommend checking out her blog!

Hi everyone! My name is Dee and I am just a girl who fell in love with books and Jamie Fraser. I love reading and binge watching numerous TV shows on Netflix. I love everything YA, but I am open to other genres as well. When I first started reading I was a huge Paranormal Romance reader, but if you can find a cute contemporary that has a great story/message I will devour it in one setting. I am currently all about Fantasy novels. When I don’t have a book in my hands, I am probably watching Arrow or Outlander. I am obsessed with baby animals and cheesy romantic comedies. I started blogging as a way to interact with more people about the books that I loved. None of my friends or family read, so blogging has been a great outlet for me to fangirl. If you ever need someone to fangirl with, I am always here 😉

Also, thank you so much Ashley for featuring me on her blog today! You’re awesome, Ashley XD

TOP 5 FAVORITE FANTASY SERIES WITH BREATHTAKING WORLDS

When I first started reading I was really intimidated by reading Fantasy. I always felt that if a book had a map that it was too complicated for me. Include a glossary? Forget it! However, I’ve read some pretty amazing books that completely converted me. Now Fantasy is my favorite genre. Here are just a few of my all-time favorite series. If you haven’t read them, please do. And if you have, I hope you loved them just as much as I do.

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

23437156

Believe it or not, Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo was actually the first YA Fantasy novel I have ever read. I have read other novels with fantasy backdrops, but this is one of the first “full on” fantasy that I read and fell in love with. The story itself is compelling, but I fell completely in love with Bardugo’s world building. She crafts such an unique world of magic that you’d wish that you were apart of it. Shadow and Bone is just the start of Bardugo’s magic. Six of Crows is the story of a group of criminal misfits coming together to pull an impossible heist. This novel will grab you from page one and not let go of it’s hold until the very last page. This has to be one of my favorite books of 2015. Bardugo really is a mastermind when it comes to magical worlds.

The Young Elites by Marie Lu

20821111

Marie Lu is the author of one of the best YA Dystopian series, Legend and when I found out she was writing a fantasy series I lost it. Completely lost it. If you love a series about a group of individuals all with unique abilities that is also pretty dark, this is the series for you. The Young Elites isn’t just your average fantasy series. It tells the story about the antivillain and it is breathtaking.

Throne of Glass series by Sarah J Maas

unnamed

The Throne of Glass has quickly become one of the most loved fantasy series out there in YA. I may be biased, but I personally think it deserves all its hype. I am in love with the world Maas has crafted. From the Fae to the Valg to the witches and the magic. I can’t get enough of this world and the series just sucks you right in. Maas gives us a pretty badass female protagonist with not one, not two, but about four different swoon-worthy guys (if you’re caught up to Heir of Fire, you’ll know). If you haven’t read the Throne of Glass series yet, I strongly urge you to. It has a great story and some awesome character development. Yes, there is a bunch of romance (maybe a little too much that needs to be decentralized) but the story itself is so strong! Maas is another Queen of Fantasy. Plus she has a pretty awesome Beauty and the Beast fantasy retelling called A Court of Thorns and Roses as well 😉

The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh

18798983

This is not only a fantastic retelling of A Thousand and One Nights, but a beautiful, magical world that Ahdieh created. The setting, the dresses, the castle (for lack of a better term), the magic, everything screams beautiful and just made me want to devour the entire story. I couldn’t not put this book down for one second. If you like retellings, you need to give this a read immediately.

Daughter of Smoke & Bone Trilogy by Laini Taylor

unnamed

I know another guest blogger has already mentioned Daughter of Smoke & Bone, but I can’t not mention it as well. It’s one my favorite fantasy series ever! I started this series after I kept hearing Katytastic rave about it constantly. I decided to pick it up and I was blown away. This series has a very intricate world based on angels and the chimaera (demons) who have been at war for years. It tells the story of a girl stuck in the middle and the ultimate forbidden love. This series is beautiful. These characters don’t love at face-value, their souls reach out to each other and to me, it’s one of the most beautiful series in YA.

Well there you have it! A few of my favorite fantasy books/series. There are definitely more, I didn’t want to hijack Ashley’s wonderful blog 🙂 I hope you enjoyed reading and thanks again to Ashley for being awesome and letting me be a guest ❤

2015 Series Challenge | Wrap- Up

I have been trying really hard recently to complete and finish series that I have been working on. I am really proud of myself for how many series I was able to complete this year  (although few) and how many I have caught up to publishing, but I still have so many more that I have started/own. These are all the ones I was able to complete this year!I have decided that 2016 will be the year of series completion!

Splintered Trilogy by A.G Howard

The Giver Quartet by Lois Lowry

The Dark Elements Trilogy by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Rusk University Series by Cora Carmack (to publication)

What series/trilogies/duologies have you completed this year?

Top 5 Wednesday | Series I Want To Start Next Year

TOP 5 WEDNESDAY

Top 5 Wednesday was created by Lainey from gingerreadslainey (YouTube, Goodreads) and if you would like to join, here is the link for the Goodreads group with all the information.

This week’s topic is Top 5 Series You Want to Start Next Year. I know I just made a TBR Reading Challenge for 2016 and it has on it many series that I want to read this year. Those are series that are completed in publication that I want to read, but for this post I decided to make a list of the top 5 series I want to start that are not completed but that I need to start soon! These are in no particular order.

A Song of Ice and Fire Series by George R.R. Martian

images

How have I not started this series. I know there is no way I will read this up to publication by the end of 2016, but I want to at least start it! I have even kept myself from watching the show.

Throne of Glass Series by Sarah J. Maas

18243700

I read Sarah J. Maas’s A Court of Thorns and Roses this year and fell in love. How have I not started this series yet. Not saying I am a hipster or anything but I had the novellas for this series on my kindle before the series became a big thing on booktube and in the book community. Yet I haven’t read any of it.

Falling Kingdoms Series by Morgan Rhodes

12954620

I have no excuses as to why I haven’t started this series. So many people rave about this series and I need to start it this next year.

Mercy Thompson Series by Patricia Briggs

71811

My friend Autumn talks about this series and I feel like it is one I need to read very soon. As well as the companion series Alpha and Omega. This is an urban fantasy and that seems to be the in thing lately so I should jump on that bandwagon.

Georgina Kincaid Series by Richelle Mead

235718

I loved Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy. I want to read everything else she writes. I am determined to read the Bloodlines series. I want to read this series as well. I heard it is amazing and is an adult paranormal!

Black Dagger Brotherhood Series by J.R Ward

42899

I technically read the first book in this series, but I want to reread it and continue on with the series. It is such a long one and will take me some time. I adore Ward and the Black Dagger Brotherhood world!

What series do you want to start in the next year?

Series I Won’t Continue

While going through and figuring out what series I have completed and the series I still have to complete I had discovered there are a lot of series I have started and for one reason or another I do not want to continue on with it. Some have way too many books, there are some I have lost interest in or ones where I read the first books and really did not like the it. If there are any of these that you believe I should give a second chance or that I really need to read let me know.

Of Monsters and Madness Series by Jessica Verday
[I read the first one and just did not enjoy it]

Spademan Series by Adam Sternbergh
[ I read the first one and did enjoy it and found it interesting, but not sure if I want to continue]

Gated Duology by Amy Christine Parker
[ I read the first one and thought I wanted to continue, but I think I am okay with where it left off.]

Faling Star Series by Christine M. Butler
[I feel like if I received the next book I might read it, but wasn’t in love with the first book although it was interesting]

Penryn & the End of Days Series by Susan Ee
[When I thought this was going to be a 6 book series there was no way I was going to continue. The first two books were just okay, but I feel like I might give the series one last chance. I haven’t decided.]

Lies Beneath Trilogy by Anne Greenwood Brown
[I read the first one and not sure if I am feeling where the trilogy is going]

Shadow Children Series by Margaret Peterson Haddix
[I read the first one. I thought it was interesting, but I think I have outgrown this series and it is too long to convince me to continue]

The Hunt Trilogy by Andrew Fukuda
[I read only the first book. I had quite a few problems with it that are keeping me from continuing.]

Fairytale Retellings Series by Jackson Pearce
[I have read one of the books of this series and I am not against reading the others there are just books I would rather read]

The Survival Trilogy by Morgan Rice
[There is no way I will be continuing with this trilogy. I hated the first one and it had so many problems. Its plot was all over the place and had too many errors]

Pretty Little Liars Series by Sara Shepard
[I read the first 4 books out of this 16 book series. It is just too long and I am a huge fan of the tv show and like it better.]

Sisterhood Series by Ann Brashares
[I read the first two books in this series and absolutely loved them, but I feel like I have outgrown the series]

Heart of Dread Trilogy by Melissa De La Cruz
[I couldn’t handle the first book. The concept was interesting but it was so poorly executed]

Total =13

What are your thoughts on these series?
