When Heroes Fall by Giana Darling | ARC Review

Publication Date: May 28 2021

Genre:Adult Mafia Romance

Series: Anti-Heroes in Love Duet

Source: Candi Kane PR

Synopsis:

I am the villain of my own story…

Jilted by my fiance.
A disappointment to my family.
Haunted by my childhood traumas.
I felt so much all my life that I resolved to feeling nothing at all.

Until I met my match.

As the most infamous mafioso of the 21st century, Dante Salvatore was madly passionate, unequivocally bad, and entirely too dangerous to know. He was everything I abhorred, yet I found myself representing him in the biggest criminal trial of the decade.

I was so focused on winning and achieving the success I deserved that I didn’t notice the gorgeous black-eyed man’s effect on me until it was too late. My icy heart had been held too close to his flame and now I wouldn’t let Dante go down without fighting with everything I had in me.

Even if the cost of a new life with him meant the loss of my old life and everything I thought I held dear.

When Heroes Fall by Giana Darling ARC Review

*I would like to thank Candi Kane PR for a copy of this book in return for an honest review*

“Not even cancel culture could cancel the mafia.”

Force proximity, hate to love, lawyer /client mafia romance

This started off interesting, you have Elena who has a past with the mafia, trauma from her youth, and recently split up with significant other all adding to her icy exterior. She gets called by her sister to represent a mafiaoso in a criminal murder case.  Then you have Dante who is a capo on trial that might not be as villainous as everyone makes him out to be.

I haven’t been able to read a Giana Darling book, but have them on my TBR and hear so much about them. So I was so excited to see this opportunity to read and review Darling’s new mafia romance. To say I am is disappointed wouldn’t be exactly the right words to use.

“If I wanted to defeat my demons, I had to become the ultimate monster.”

So lets start with the things I did enjoy and made it so I could make it through the book without DNFing, which I was close to doing. I enjoyed the banter between Elena and Dante. That is one thing in books that will hook me quickly is the quick wit and jabs at each other that ends up being most times in a playful/flirtatious  manner. I absolutely adored Aurora and think that scene was one of my favorites seeing bothe of them interact with her and the way Elena melted a littler around her. Although I though some more could have been done with the main characters, I thought there were a lot of fun side characters that added a nice touch and fun element to the story. Also the end of the book really captivated me and kind of made it so I was interested in reading the next book to find out what happens because it was kind of a cliffhanger.

Now for those not so fun things. This book was BORING!  It had its moments that would spark my interest again, but a lot of times I was forcing myself through it or skimming parts. Not going to lie I skimmed the second sex scene because the first one was so cringe. The wording that was used just was off putting like “lightly furred thighs” just not for me. I tried not to judge too hard on the spelling and grammar since it was an uncorrected copy I was provided, but it was so distracting. I understand a few here and there but there were so many cases and even times when names were wrong. I really hope it was caught before publication.

“That two opposites could co-exist in one whole. That you didn’t have to be all of nothing, black or white, good or bad. “

Overall this book was just not for me. I was expecting a little more for it being a mafia romance. It could have been much shorter than it was it had a lot of unnecessary content in my opinion and then it was quick on the mafia topics. We spent a ton of time in both of their heads, but I felt like their interactions and encounters were lacking something. I am still wanting to give Darlings other books a try because I did enjoy the banter elements and the world that was being developed, specifically the Fallen Mens Series, but not sure I will pick up the second book in this duet.
