Now don’t get me wrong I love John Green and his writing, but this story just didn’t do it for me. I don’t know if it was the fact that I listened to it on audiobook (which I found the narrator a little annoying) or if the book is so overhyped and just caused me to already be annoyed with the book or for the fact that it is a story about cancer and its not really my favorite type of book. It was just a little disappointing for me and didn’t live up to my expectations, it fell a little flat for me. A lot of times I find cancer/terminal disease books to be very similar. I understand and appreciate it is a story to be told and the disease is a very big issue, I am not saying any of this stuff to belittle or make the topic not seem important, it just is not my type of book, but I digress.
John Green is an amazing story teller and greatly brought to life the struggles and complications that come with children with cancer. I felt that the characters had great and witty personalities. Although faced with great difficulties Hazel, Augustus and even Isaac were able to have a life and laugh although struggling and having to face the impending fact of dying. I did feel that sometimes the characters were a little annoying and pretentious at times.
Overall this was a sad yet heart warming story of love and life and really gave you an insight into the life and struggles of a teenager living with cancer that brought up extremely deep and thoughtful questions about life, love and death.

I can understand where you’re coming from. I can’t really watch or read about cancer or even stuff set in a hospital, it’s just all too real for me and I feel like I jinx myself (which is completely idiotic). Also, because of it’s hype, I’m staying away. Nice to see your review also! It is always a shame when the hype over shadows a book but it happens (in my case, a lot!).
I kind of didn’t want to read the book because of all the hype but if I wanted to watch the movie I knew I had to read the book. Im kind of upset that I didn’t absolutely love it, but what are you gonna do, right.
I completely understand how you feel. I hesitate with books on this subject matter, and even more when there is hype surrounding it. I haven’t read it yet simply because of the movie being out and I don’t want to be severely disappointed. I think I’m going to hold off for awhile. Great review!
