Netflix is on a role and I am loving their book to movie adaptations! Following the recent To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before movie release at the end of the summer, which was so well received and loved, Dumplin’ the adaptation of Julie Murphy’s book came out earlier this month. I listened to this book as an audiobook last year and fell in love with the characters, book and big girl representation! It was really one of the first books I have read that contained a character I felt a deep connection with in regards to physical looks and the relationship she has with her mother. It was a fun book with an focus on to Dolly Parton and the pageant life of the deep south.
I think the casting was amazing! I don’t think I could pick which one was my favorite, each of them did such an amazing job bringing this story to life! The Drag Queens definitely were one of the best parts and they were fantastic! Then of course Jennifer Aniston, who I thought did a very good job. I do wish we got more of Bo, but the parts at which we did get to see him were so great and I need my own Bo! I just wish there was a little more development into that relationship and more from what happened in the book between them. I also thought the friendship between Will and Ellen was so well done! I did wish we got a little more of the development of friendship between Will, Hannah and Millie it was one of my favorite parts of the book.
Overall I thought the adaptation was so well done and enjoyed the female empowerment piece with the topic of loving yourself and your body! It is important to remind young teens and young adults that you should never limit what you want because you are afraid you dont fit in or arent good enough. I so hope that we get the companion book to Dumplin”, Puddin’ by Julie Murphy, which focuses on Millie. Millie is one of my favorite characters, she is so brave and has such an optimistic outlook at life which I wish I had a little bit more of myself.
If you have not watched this movie yet, what have you been doing? Make sure you have some tissues because it is definitely a tear jerker.
Have you watched the movie or read the book? What are your thoughts?
