Girls Supporting Girls
Your Favourite female friendship.
I am going old school with my pick for favorite female friendships. The first one that came to mind was Rose Hathaway & Vasilisa Dragomir from Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead! These two would do anything for each other and prove it multiple times just how far they would go to protect one another.
Seth
A book that has problems, maybe it made you angry or you just hated it but it worked out in the end.
This was a hard one for me to figure out. The one I decided on was Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie. I ended up really liking and enjoying this book, but it was not a happy problem free journey. It did make me angry while I was reading it at the beginning because I was struggling to follow along with the story and felt so confused. It took me awhile to get into it and I have no idea why I haven’t picked up the second book.
GRIT: Girls Respecting and Inspiring Themselves
A book that made you feel inspired.
A book I read recently that really spoke to me and I felt like I could relate to so much was Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body by Roxane Gay. How real and open about certain topics as Gay was definitely inspired me and let me know I am not alone.
Queen Emma
A Book that surprised you.
I am not a huge fan of contemporary books, especially YA because sometimes I find them to be whiney and annoying. I had heard quite a few times that Paper Princess by Erin Watt was so good, so I gave it a chance. Let me tell you, I binge read the whole first three books within 2 weeks time. I was so surprised with how much I loved them!
Walkout
A book you just couldn’t finish.
I feel like this has been a topic that has been talked about recently in the book community about the pressures of reading books and whether or not to DNF books and what the proper procedure, time, etc is for going about DNFing. There are quite a few books I forced myself to finish and dont know why because I hated them and they were a waste of time. I need to listen to my gut more and not force myself to continue if I am not enjoying it. The last book I just could not finish and was not for me was The Gilded King by Josie Jaffrey.
Show some Moxie
Your Favourite Feminist Read.
I just recently finished Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu and I thought it was such a powerful book for young women. Being a girl who went to school not to long ago and someone who still faces sexism, it was nice to see a book promote a way in which girls can fight back and showing it is okay to fight back to protect yourselves and other women. I definitely have to say that Dear Ijeawele, or a Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is one of my favorite feminist reads!
I tag everyone!
